Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Many reasons. One, it's divisive. As much as artists want to preserve their desired look, they also want to cater to an audience that may be put off by it. For some people, stuff like CA and motion blur can actually induce nausea or headaches from prolonged exposure. So a toggle option helps address all that.

Two, it is often used as a crutch to mask other issues, like lack of texture detail or distant LoD. 007, for example, looks pretty raw while driving when you disable the radial blur. You actually start noticing LoD pop in. The other reason is to make it seem you are moving real fast when you actually aren't. IOI gave the toggle option, but another dev may not want their game to look like the cars are going too slow or the pop-in is bad. It's ultimately a developer decision on what to prioritize for each feature, the player preference or their product's presentation. And like most things, it's not black and white, so devs may fall anywhere on that spectrum for each effect.

Three, these are still post processing effects because actual lens simulation is extremely complicated and performance intensive. Real Depth of Field, CA simulation requires path tracing primary rays, something unlikely to happen till end of next generation, if not further out. Simulating motion blur during path tracing is an active research topic and several papers in the last couple of years that tackle it. So just having RT available does not mean actual lens simulation is within reach. But once primary rays are inevitably path traced for other benefits, adding lens simulation becomes a trivial task. And devs that want that will certainly include it.

Toggles should still be possible though. And that would be what I'd prefer too, so people can choose what suits them. I don't believe there is only one right answer on this topic. If a game calls back to the past, lens defects add a layer of immersion that you won't get otherwise. Even at 60 fps, some games look better with motion blur. Film grain always works well in horror. There are genre specific effects that always seem appropriate.

Should Halo have CA? I don't know. It's set in a sci fi future, so anachronistic lens defects don't make much sense, unless they are trying to invoke nostalgia. Given it is a remake of a classic, that may be their justification? I don't think it's a particularly strong one as they aren't going for a retro futuristic aesthetic, and 2001 isn't that long ago either. So the only explanation is a "filmic" look. Shallow as that may sound, it's the dev's prerogative to choose what presentation they want for their game.

Personally, I think CA, DoF, film grain and Motion Blur should all remain toggles/sliders in any game that has them. The devs can choose defaults, but gamers should be allowed to adjust it. Unlike a 2 hour film, this is significant time and interaction spent with the content and you really don't want to make it unpleasant for people who don't like it/can't physically handle it.
That makes sense, I know that primary rays are necessary for that but I also think some developers should have experimented with this already, in particular with hardware motion blur considering that there are dedicated extensions for that in Nvidia GPUs since Ampere. Chromatic aberration and such, in the other hand... I agree completely.

Artistic intent to make the image worse? Do you even know what chromatic aberration is and where it came from? Do you really not understand that "artistic intent" isn't sacred and isn't always correct or ideal?
Image worse according to who? I know exactly where it came from. Artistic intent is always sacred, but some implementations can be bad. There should be a toggle or slider for all effects, but when the default is changed players aren't experiencing that game as intended by devs.

Well then enjoy everything staying the same. Shorter games plus faster release schedules is the only common sense option. Why does every game need to be 20+ hours? Thats ridiculous
When I buy a game I have wanted for a long time, I don't want a 5 hour game. What's wrong with 20hr+ games? You pretend you have to play it all at once... its called save game file. Also devs have stories to tell and bang for buck. For example, I loved TLOU 2's length, I didn't want the game to end.

I suspect Chromatic aberration (and oftentimes some other global post processing effects) is often used because C-suite/upper management who can come from completely unrelated industries and possibly know nothing about gaming and tech sees a feature takes zero effort and zero time to add and they see a report that other products have used it in the past, so they just go "lets do the same thing as everyone else, add this task to the kanban board/next sprint, tell Bob the programmer to add chromatic aberration tomorrow" and not because of artistic intent, artists are just small cogs in the machine. (i doubt people making assets in blender do so with CA in mind)

If i see no toggle directly in-game menu i assume the game was made by a company whos management is bloated shit. A feature added for the sake of adding a feature, remember it can take just one right person to decide to add/remove something and its impossible that multiple people could come to a mutual agreement amongst themselves in all things.

We can throw out this pointless artistic intent argument out of the window unless you want to pretend the whole game dev teams are single unified beings with a shared mind, nobody can possibly be right/wrong on this front.

If you knew where it came from, you wouldn't be asking that question.

Artistic intent is always sacred, but some implementations can be bad.
That's a contradiction. And even leaving post-processing effects aside, I assume you reject every version of Skyrim except the original PS3/Xbox 360 release?
By your logic, even increasing the resolution is a violation of the original artistic vision because the image becomes "too clean". You console guys have developed a pretty severe case of Stockholm syndrome after years without freedom of choice.

There should be a toggle or slider for all effects
If it were in Halo, this conversation wouldn't even be happening.

I miss the times when a new generation ment mindblowing grafics upgrades, i really do
diminishing returns and economics sadly, the gap between consoles and PC is too huge right now, if an studio decided the crazy idea to make a game exclusibly for the RTX 5090 it will definitely mindblow your mind

It's not a coincidence that GTA 6, Matrix demo, and Hellblade 2, three of the most photorealistic games/demos of the generation, inplement heavy usage of CA.

There is nothing realistic about CA.

Eyes don't have it, first person games shouldn't have it at all. For third person games it makes a bit more sense but only if you assume that there is a drone with a camera behind the player 100% of the time.

Bad camera.... you don't see strong CA in movies and tvs shows recorded using modern cameras.

Developers slap CA in almost every game, no matter the time period or location (space, medieval Europe etc.).

Holy shit, we all knew it will be woke but this is going to be even bigger 🤡 show that I anticipated. It's like Marvel movies but even more gay and lame. Gonzito Gonzito , I'm tired boss...

Guardians of the Galaxy game is the best Marvel game ever, and it will remain it for quite a long time...

No one's gonna talk about how that one girl has deer antlers ...

It's not a pointless argument, These effects are used for artistic intent period, you can argue the same management argument about any aspect of anything. Most of the time CA, motion blur and other effects are added by the art team. People who are saying "these effects shouldn't be in video games" are assholes, what they should be saying is "maybe the implementation is bad in some of these games" or "there should be a slider / toggle for these effects".

I don't really see the reason for motion blur when I'm playing the game at locked 60fps minimum.

UE5 motion blur is just crap, you can artifacts around objects similar to bad frame generation.

This game locked to 60fps still needs motion blur to look fluid on OLED. Frame gen from 60 to 120 actually produces cleaner results than in game motion blur...

Says who?

Logic.

You don't see CA in real life through your eyes, same for film grain.

Went back a bit into Ass Shadows and it looks gorgeous as ever. Ubi really needs to get their shit together and learn or re-learn from BF or remember great past titles.

faces in this scene looked friggin phenomenal,
fucking trash capture quality on PS5 Pro, though

Film grain and CA putting in heavy work, looks cinematic as hell.

These EFFECTS are added for artistic intent, what don't you guys get?
Sure, and the lack of AA or low quality AF are also added cause of artistic intent.
720p resolution is an artistic intent, as well as 30 fps.
Don't you dare change these.

On a more serious note, all lens distortion emulation stuff is mostly an attempt at making a game to look like a movie.
There was this argument some years ago that a vaseline-like AA which blurs stuff into oblivion would make game look more "realistic" cause it would look more like a DVD movie. Similar reasoning and origin.
Basically if you want your game to "emulate" movies then CA/FG will help you with that.
If you want your game to simulate reality then CA/FG should be disabled cause there are no lens distortions in reality; even though our eyes do have some of these, our brain "cleans up" the image, removing the physical optical issues of our eyes in "post processing".
Arguing whether this is an artistic intent or not is rather pointless cause the way people prefer to see the world isn't up to the artists to decide. Hence why the options to disable this stuff is necessary.

That's a very poor emulation. Chromatic aberration across the entire frame in films usually only happens because of improper film registration. The color fringing caused by lenses only appears near the edges of the frame, while the center remains sharp. And there's no point in simulating out-of-focus aberrations during gameplay because there's no actual focus - nobody plays with DoF enabled. So the whole "cinematic" argument is nonsense.

Apparently this isn't based on any real announcement or source though and should be due around the time ray reconstruction is out sometime in August. Hope so anyways, I've been holding off buying it until the PT patch.
Yeah, I said the same thing later. Waiting for August too.

That's how CA is supposed to work in games too. Some artists are just clueless, which is why no one should be seriously considering their "intent" as ground truth.

So the whole "cinematic" argument is nonsense.
It's not, it's the sole reason why all lens distortion effects are being used in games.

CA doesn't "work" - it's an optical defect. Camera and optics manufacturers have spent decades and a lot of money trying to eliminate it with specialized glass (ED, UD, FLD, etc.), better optical designs, and software correction because it degrades image quality. Yet here you are defending an obvious degradation in image quality.

CA never bothered me. Now last gen lighting, shitty draw distance, por LODs, pop-in, garbage ingame character models like in FF7 Rebirth, I see coming from a mile away.

Adding CA to this wont make it look better.

Removing CA from this might make it look worse.

I have another Hot Take

Motion Blur Sucks, its awful and I hate that Digital Gaydry started this "trend" that Motion blur is nice

Nah man, Its ugly and makes the image blurry when turning the camera. Burn it with fire

Camera motion blur is, object motion blur is nice in some games

Camera motion blur can be helpful when you are locked to 60fps on OLED (but it has to be subtle). But in many games implementation is dogshit.

Object motion blur is great, it creates CGI feel to games - I love it.

Imagine thinking this would look better WITHOUT the post-processing effects? lmfao.

Hating CA and film grain and motion blur is just a You problem. Its there for a reason.
