I've always had a very different look and tone in my head of what the Neuromancer would look like. Neon noir. Shadows punctured by a phosphorous glow. Certainly not clean with featureless smooth surfaces.

I've had the book on my wishlist for yeeeaaars. This trailer looks fucking sick so I'm making it my next thing to read.
Gibson is really on another level. I need to read the early works again as well. I recall his understanding of computers was so naive but now I think its more accurate with our current tech

Make sure you also read Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. Count Zero is my favorite and Mona Lisa Overdrive probably the least but the entire trilogy is worth reading.

Obnoxious? It can be frustrating with lots of tech jargon that isn't explained, like the book was contemporary to its story, and it can be pretty staccato in its delivery but why would you say obnoxious?

I think I was trying to read Snow Crash, but I found the writing to be grating to the nerves for some reason. Maybe 'Hiro Protagonist' was just too eye-rolling for me.
edit: Although, Snow Crash is Stephenson not Gibson, eh? I'm getting shit mixed up

Yah the look is pretty disapointing. In cyberpunk the ridley scott look is pretty much expected and this doesnt even really fit the stories tone either.

I remember really liking Pattern Recognition as well. It's set in the then present, in 2002, and it's about a woman named Cayce who works in marketing who has an allergy to marketing, basically. This makes her uniquely able to sense things that haven't been used by marketing yet, which is useful to marketing firms looking for the next big thing.
It's not quite as amazing as Neuromancer, mostly because this book's even more a product of its time, especially the stuff about 9/11. But I think Gibson's prose here is actually better than it was earlier in his career, overall.
I also like all the nonstop descriptions of brands and references to stuff, but if you're not into it it might all just sound insanely pretentious lol.
Anyways, that trailer was great. Definitely on my radar now :]

I wonder if the book translates well to a tv show in this day and age. A dude jacking in to steal data by hacking cyberspace was an insane concept when the book came out but today it's the most trope-y, cringe-inducing line you could imagine.

Yeah, I have to agree. After having watched the trailer a second time, it feels sterile. At least Gibson described The Sprawl with a lot more neon-lit stuff, dirty, etc. At least that's how it went in my head (and that was before I saw Akira or Ghost in the Shell). But maybe the trailer scenes were just badly selected (which wouldn't be surprising, given it's Apple).

This is unsurprising for Apple TV. They usually overspend with their budgets.
I said it before but I think they have been trying to take the quality show crown from HBO for a while, and they are very close to doing so.

I tried reading Neuromancer for the first time a couple years ago, but the writing was too nebulous for me to stick with. It was kind of like Beloved by Toni Morrison where it's a more poetic, unique style that's more interested in tone than concretely describing the reality of scenes. I could get through Beloved when part of my undergrad performance depended on it, but I didn't have that pressure here.
I am looking forward to this with hopes that it's faithful (enough) to the influential source material but presented in a way that doesn't take as much dedication and effort to understand. Or maybe my brain's just rotted.

I will check it out. If they can at least keep the world immersive I might watch it, though gives me the impression that its kind of comical and im not too big on banter in my shows so I hope they keep it to a minimum. I never read the book, but from what I've seen Neuromancer is a pretty serious story. Might like It, didn't really like The Expanse at first glance, but the world was so immersive and believable that I got hooked, but if I had to guess, its not something I will continue watching after the first. I hope I'm proven wrong.

I'm loving the look of the world and I really like the way everything looks. I really like how they went the Matrix route in certain aspects. I hope they can differiate the show from those movies. This show looks way better than Blade Runner 2099. I'm still giving Blade Runner 2099 a watch but I don't expect it to be good
I only read Cryptonomicon when it comes to Stephenson and HATED It. I was planning on reading Snow Crash but if it's as obnoxious when it comes to writing as that Cryptonomicon book, I'll probably be skipping the rest of his stuff
As for Gibson, I do want to read The Sprawl Trilogy which is what I heard this show is adopting

It's too bad that Altered Carbon ended up being bad. That show had such a great first season and scratched that Cyberpunk itch that certain audiences want. That genre is really underserved when it comes to TV/Movies

Crytonomicon and Snow Crash are actually extremely different iirc. I remember Cryptonomicon being basically a history book. The main character is basically not a character at all, he's just there to interact with all these real people. Quicksilver is the same way. Whereas Snow Crash is an actual novel. I remember Snow Crash being kind of immature asnd silly in parts, but it was fun.

Snow Crash is a bit more accessible and less of an information dump as his later works. But Neal is never an easy read.
Don't sleep on Ghost in the Shell on amazon. It's very faithful to the manga and is a lot of fun (its more light hearted than the film).

Dude, I've been singing it's praises in the Anime And Manga thread. Before a new episode comes out I rewatch the previously released episodes. When it comes to the manga, I want to read everything by Shirow Masamune this fall, that includes all the Ghost In The Shell stuff he wrote. Even before I watched the new show, I knew it would be quite different from the other adaptations since I remembered hearing that the manga is more light hearted in tone
