Weird, Obscure, and Macabre Media

This is a thread for any kind of media (movies, animation, books, etc) that defies easy explanations but yet you still appreciate on a level.

It could very well be Horror as a genre, though not always. It is less about overt fear and more about being unsettled and left with questions.

I just wanted to make a thread for pieces of media that you come across that left you feeling unnerved and at the same time impressed.

Could be movies but also could be short films or a one off episode in a tv or streaming series.

It could be a soundtrack or an album

And ofcourse, it could be a video game.

You guys know the old Tool music videos and how fucked up they were?

Here's the brother artist team of animators that inspired Adam Jones

Edit: I also believe the Quay Brothers were cited as an inspiration for Alice Madness Returns as well.

Okay... so the Broken Video by NIN.

Wow, it's kind of a small rabbit hole.

TLDR: A young and still heavily drug abusing Trent Reznor decided to make an entire video as fucked up as possible with the visuals to support the sophmoric EP to PrettyHateMachine.

What I am showing here is perhaps the only section that is.... SFW (kinda?!). If this interests you, you can catch the rest online but seriously be warned, it does have extreme gore and nudity at points.

Edit: Technically Wish is part of the Broken video but it is just a normal music video. Extremely cool if you like Mad Max as a vibe, but tame compared to the rest.

I posted this in the random YouTube video thread a bit ago. But may as well share it again here. It's the first in a five part series. I'll not say too much about it but there's some lore to dig into that's pretty cool.

Everything surrounding Aleister Crowley and his writings.

Once you realize the extent of his dark, weird, perverse writings and beliefs, it makes all the more fascinating/weird that he had a massive influence on pop culture, music and film (or depending on your world view, it only makes sense).

Never understood this game

I was a propaganda sponge back in the N64/Dreamcast days, and they made Seaman sound groundbreaking like what LLMs/AI can do today. In no way is it that at all. Seems like they had people who couldn't speak English very well do the voice recognition training because my dumbass fish didn't understand crap. One of the few Dreamcast games I sold back.

I'd say Heck is one of the creepiest short films I've seen.

I also like The Oldest View from Kane Parsons.

Heck was made by the guy who went on to make Skinamarink.

I was in the rare perfect mood for Skinamarink when I saw it, so I can understand why some (most?) hate it, but I thought it was great. That movie also fits OP's ask.

If I ever visit a place where weed is legal then I'll watch Skinamarink to be in the right headspace. It's seems incredibly unique as an experience, but also, like with you, one you need to be in the perfect mood for. I can see it creeping under your skin once you get immersed.

I had to check out the full video on YT and yeah... that was really fucked up.
Experimental is already disturbing enough without the gore and weird sexual sadomasochistic stuff.

Here's my one:

This is a super cool card game with twists and maccabre galore. It's one of my goats! There are a lot of things to spoil so no more commentary from me!

The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb comes to mind. Really bizarre movie. Description:

It features a miniature baby born to a couple, who is then kidnapped by a genetic lab, leading him on a bizarre journey through a gritty, industrial underworld filled with strange creatures, all told with minimal dialogue and a unique, unsettling aesthetic. Originally a rejected BBC short, the feature-length version gained acclaim at festivals for its innovative animation, which uses live actors treated like clay figures, and its score by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.

Many many many years ago, possibly even last century, I happened across a video on one of the many shock sites that used to exist called Putrid Sex Object, and weird doesn't even come close. It was an "art project" shot in black and white, featuring a guy in makeup wearing a summer dress and panties playing with a skinned horses head, not a skull, but freshly skinned and still bloody. He proceeded to make out with the head, and then got his knob out and started fucking one of the eye sockets. Crazy stuff, and the people that made it need serious help.

Yeahhhhhh... he and the band was on a dark as fuck kick. Even more so than other peroids of time.

Even the studio they recorded from was purchased specifically cause the Sharon Tate murders happened there.
