XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC announced

The game I want most is Splinter Cell Double Agent. Most people dont know that the Xbox/PS2 version is a completely different game than the one released on PS3/360/PC.

If you loved Chaos Theory, its a must play. For many, its far superior than the PS3/360/PC version.

EDIT: If the framerates are stuck at 30 then it is a hard pass from me.

It would be disengenous for anyone to argue that this is a good thing.

A very good thing.

Props to Asha for making this happen. Credit where credit is due.

A few days after I finally buy Halo CE Anniversary MCC on steam 🫠 if I'd known I would've waited for Halo 1 to be added to this, though maybe they wont due to MCC existing.

I'd rather just play the original game but my Xbox X2VGA adapter doesnt work with my current TV and the component input probably has shite input lag due to how much scaling is happening.

Who knows. They are putting their games on ps5 which couldn't be more of a direct competitor. They want to actually sell games.

They are putting their big live service games on their and some single player games on PS5 and they are new games. But these games aren't all first party and they would probably have to have some of the publishers get a cut of these games on their store. They are not going to put these on steam also for them to take a 30 percent cut on these old ass games.

They're only launching this feature with 4 OG Xbox games. No news yet on whether 360 games will come to PC but I would assume so eventually.
  • BLiNX: The Time Sweeper
  • Conker: Live and Reloaded
  • Crimson Skies®: High Road to Revenge
  • Fuzion Frenzy®

This is going to require the Xbox app on PC?
If so, that is a major problem.

Sure sounds like it

In addition to making these games available on PC for the first time ever, we've added new features to enhance the experience on PC while preserving the original gameplay. Players can customize graphics settings, including up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync support, Fullscreen and Windowed display modes, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and more. These games also include customizable language and audio settings.

We plan to add even more features to XBOX Backward Compatibility games in the future. I'm excited to share that later this year we will be bringing one of the top fan-requested features to select original XBOX games on both console and PC: Achievements. The first four games releasing in preview today will be updated to include Achievements in the coming months.

Getting started is simple. If your PC or handheld meets the minimum system requirements below, you'll be able to access backward compatible titles through the XBOX on PC app.

Also they couldn't have chosen worse games to roll this out with. Fuzion Frenzy aka Bill Gates favorite game of all time?

Also the 4 games are all MS published games. But MS did publish Lost Odyssey and NGB iirc.

That's his point. That's it's "NOT" all about the console.

You guys backed the wrong horse. It happens your hobby is dying and there is no better time then now to pick a better one.

Edit: This is the type of ship Nintendo and Sony needs to be doing but aren't. Nintendo has the games to survive but Sony doesn't. They need to move unless the plan is to go down with the SPS Playstation.

Bro I might shit a chicken if I can get Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Fable 2 into this program.

And go cozy up to Namco to get eternal sonata added since they refuse to remaster that one.

They only ever released 53 OG Xbox games into their backwards compatibility program anyway. And that library is missing a ton of great exclusives like Halo (lol), Jet Set Radio Future, MechAssault, Azurik, Project Gotham Racing, tons more.

Here's hoping their renewed interest in the program comes with them expanding the game library even further.

CBA to read it all, does it mean that I can play my Xbox game library on pc?

Edit - just read, a big pile of nothing.
These games can probably be emulated better

If Sony was smart they should do the same thing go hard on backwards compatibility amongst PS1 -PSVita instead of the bullshit drip feed.

Well surely new single player games are more of a draw to your platform than games from 20 years ago. So it makes less sense to put Halo on ps5 than it does to put Lost Odyssey on Steam.

Crimson Skies is great, I wonder how long it'll take for someone to get this working on the Steam Deck?

Nobody's been able to get any Windows Store games running natively on the Steam Deck yet... and Microsoft doesn't seem too keen to get their launcher/games working in Linux so... likely never.

Of course Crimson Skies plays great on the Steam Deck in xemu, so...

It depends newer games come with way bigger budgets than games 20 years ago. I'm sure the cost of keeping 20 year old games on your own platform is way less risk then a new game coming out. This move is to have get Xbox players to have the option of going either pc or console.

No doubt those will be system sellers. Those are the exact games gamers have been waiting for to reembrace Xbox.

Uh Huh Yes GIF

They may not be system sellers but they can add more value to their store once they start doing exclusives and they have Xbox games from previous generations on their as well. Especially if they aren't on steam.

Here's hoping this gets reverse engineered to not require the Xbox app and allow us to throw whatever game files we want into it.

Probably the best thing they've done in recent memory. I think I'm gonna wait until it matures a little, hopefully they'll be adding everything up to the 360 at least.

I'm a noob so I have to ask. What is a decomp and what are the benefits?
it's where they decompile the running code and then can rebuild it and make changes to it... it usually takes many years because decomping code just gets you methods with characters as naming conventions and random strings.

but the benefits are that you can technically reverse engineer and build in new features like modernizing the API (something like DX to Vulkan), higher resolutions, uncapping framerates, in some cases adding full multiplayer where there wasn't any before, adding ray tracing if thats something people want, fixing issues that the original may of had.

I bought Otogi 1 and 2 for XBL from eBay. It would be sweet to get those officially running on PC. I've got quite a few OG Xbox games from XBO. Nice touch if they don't shut it down. Perhaps this isn't all that expensive to keep running. 4 titles won't move mountains, but it's a start. Live & Reloaded had a fun mp mode.
