Not sure I'd call this character a protagonist but Bone Doctor from Hunt: Showdown is one of the sickest character designs out there imo and I love the lore.

Born in Senegal and brought to New Orleans as a slave, Doctor John was eventually freed and rose to prominence in the New Orleans Voodoo community, leading a chapter of loyal Hunters. His abilities led to suspicions that he had caused the very plague he fought, though none who spoke against him survived for long.

Aya Brea, especially in Parasite Eve 2. She has something to say about basically everything you can see in any given scene, and I had a ton of fun just searching environments top-to-bottom just to hear what Aya thought about each and every little thing. Her little internal thoughts really fleshed her out as a person, and gave her a ton of personality.

Something to be said about a character who truly manned up, found a purpose greater than himself and became a Dad.

It's like your best friend who was a burnout who joined the military and came back a changed man. Dude truly had a heroes journey from start to finish.

My equal would be Nameless One from Planescape Torment. I feel like describing why ruins the storytelling but the "What changes the nature of a Man" rings deeply true to his character and the games theme. Just love everything about this game and I'd love a proper remake in an updated engine.
