Final Fantasy X 25th anniversary trailer

Last good mainline FF game
FFXI and 12 have entered the chat.

XI is a mmo STILL played to this day. It is my favorite game of all time. You may not like mmorpgs but being a ps2 console mmorpg with cross play to pc back then is monumental stuff. I have friends I made on that game I have to this day I chat with weekly.

And 12 while it isn't perfect is one of my most revisited games in the franchise. It takes some of the best parts of XIs combat to put it into a SP formula.

Then the remaining games after are all questionable. I find them all good but they never get to the greatness of 12 and prior.

The music in this game is so good man
And to think, "To Zanarkand " was intended for something else! After it was written, it was deemed "too sad" for its purpose and shelved. And in the end it was perfect for FFX.

It is an offline MMO, which is why it is bad. Why randomize chest contents? Why does the archer character have the worst bow dps, and the gun character have the worst gun dps? Why are the player characters interchangeable, other than the prior mentioned secret flaws? And why is the best items in the game locked out of access if you open any of three unmarked treasure chests several chapters ago? Why have daggers that are clearly designed for dual wielding and then have no dual welding in the game? Why is the puzzle dungeon entirely luck based and you have no control over the outcome other than reset the machine and reload?

It might be fun for those who like MMOs, but people who like single player games expected better. i am not interested in READING about the story, i want to be involved in it.

That game was the end of an era. I never played a JRPG afterwards that came close to how magical FFX or the JRPGs that came before it were.

It's not because I was a kid when I played them. I played story heavy video games in my adult years that were incredible too. I just think JRPGs peaked around this time. It's amazing how unique FFX's tone and setting still feels to this day.

Cool.
Can we get a new remaster that doesn't butcher the character models though?

Sorry to be that guy, but I think X is the most overrated game in the series.

The writing, direction, and characters are retarded. This game was the first time I ever felt embarrassed by the shit coming out of the TV. I had some good fun making fun of Tidus with my roommates at least.

I also hate the battle system. The ONE strategy, beginning to end, is "swap in whichever party member can hit the enemy's weak point" and that shit is tedious and boring as hell. Plus they made it so anyone who takes at least one action in battle gets the full AP, so you're constantly swapping around just so your party members don't leave AP on the table.

IMO it's the second-worst of the post-PSX mainline FF games (16 being the worst).

Last good FF was 12 and before that the glory that is XI and the entirety of Vana'diel.

And given XII is part of Ivalice by default both FF Tactics and Vagrant Story are included in the fantastical world that is Ivalice.

Anyone that disagrees is just too high on Magicite to be capable of rational thought.

This is comically incorrect.

If anyone was wondering this trailer is primarily meant to promote the FFX/X-2 Remaster release for Switch 2.

On a positive note X-2 has the best pure turn based system to date in the FF series.

The Tidus at the start of the game and the Tidus at the end of the game are 2 very different people. Tidus is actually a fantastic character and how he is written. He actually shows growth throughout the game. I assume you never got very far, right?

I love Final Fantasy X, it is one of the most special games I've ever played, but this trailer...

While all of those are memorable scenes from the game, they could have made something more, like, remake those scenes with modern animation.

I'm not talking about his character arc. I'm talking about how it's written and delivered.

The writers don't know how to write anything except corny infantile melodrama. His whole schtick for the early part of the game is to loudly proclaim his idiocy at every opportunity so that everyone else has an excuse to dump lore on you. That has to be the lamest possible way to write an isekai character.

Plus his voice is whiny, he looks dumb, and his animations are comically exaggerated. Every cutscene he's wildly flailing around like a clown.

(and I beat the game FWIW)

I'll just add, I don't hate the game. Some aspects are really great. The music, environments, and production values were mindblowing at the time and still hold up today. It was my first PS2 game.

I still enjoyed it overall. I was just really disappointed at the writing and characters. Up to that point it felt like Squaresoft were really trying to elevate video game storytelling to a higher level. Then with FFX (and Kingdom Hearts) they regressed to cringe shounen anime.

Truly loved Final Fantasy X and it remains one of my top entries in the series. It took a lot of steps in the series(such as voices) that made it unique.

I also enjoyed the sequel from a gameplay standpoint, though I didn't care as much for the story.

Someone earlier in the thread asked about a new remaster--I don't believe there is one, though I think the upcoming Switch 2 version has some things the previous entries don't? I cant recall.

There has also been serious talk about a third entry in the series in interviews and I believe a story *has* been written, but it's basically on hold until FFVII is finally complete.

That's certainly a spicy take.

Now there's a take.

FFX was a game about depression, loss, grief, and failure to achieve one's goals. Victories were hard-won, and paid for in actual lives. It juxtaposed a serious, dark story with bright, colorful visuals, and it did so deftly. Nothing about its presentation screams "anime" in the slightest, except for perhaps its occasional dips into humor (which the game really needed).

It's one of the few Japanese games that reads like a novel, rather than a manga. You couldn't be farther from the mark.

Not only is it, in my opinion, the best Final Fantasy ever made - and it's not even close - it stands as one of the best games I've ever played.

Not really. It's personal opinion.

For example, I think the greatest mainline FF game (as well as one of the best JRPGs ever made) is FFXV.
Well, opinions being what they are and all...

I will say, I bounced hard off of FFXV, for various reasons. I will go so far as to call 12 and 13 objectively bad. As in, they're just straight-up bad games, both mechanically and conceptually.

I don't think I'd go so far as to say 15 is bad, simply because I really did not give it a chance at all. That was certainly a matter of personal opinion. X was the end of an era, that much is certain.

Honestly, I probably love FFX precisely because it is so different to the rest. I prefer games like Growlanser, to other archetypical JRPGs.

I really like X-2 and XIII-2. XV has a lot of questionable design choices, but I really like it anyway, too.

X-2 is just a ton of fun. The mission design and writing, the music, the dress spheres. Awesome game.

XIII-2 I feel even more strongly about. It's probably my second favourite Final Fantasy ever after 7. Some of the best music in the entire series, great characters with great voice acting, great story, lots of different areas, rewards exploration like few other games.

I should try XII again sometime. I got pretty far but then I got distracted by something else...

Still love the game after all this time. I'm kind of sad that this RPG template - where the game is heavily cinematic and more focused on long, linear trails with some deviations - didn't really last. FFXIII tried it again and failed. Lost Odyssey is the only real successor to FFX that comes to mind. FFX also had arguably the best soundtrack in the entire series, and the the most distinctive environments. I'd like to revisit the game again soon, and I guess this would be the symbolic year for it. The best version is still the PS2 International release (which is entirely in English). The remasters are convenient, but I don't like basically... any of the visual changes they made.

But yeah, the game really transports me back to what gaming was like in 2001. In the span of like 2 months, I was playing Devil May Cry, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Halo, Dead or Alive 3, and this. And I didn't even have a GC at the time. What a time to be alive. I genuinely don't think kids now have it nearly that good, despite there being so much more out there these days.

The problem with FF XII is that you can mainly change the whole cast with sponges and the story as a whole would have almost zero changes... but as a standalone game it is VERY GOOD (good lord, i loved the gambit concept :-D)

It's strange to see a lot of people dislike FFXII. I remember when it came out as a swansong game for the PS2 and people were gushing over it. I'm pretty sure Edge magazine called it one of the best games in the franchise.

FFXII isn't my favourite game in the franchise, but I think it's definitely in the top five.

He isn't wrong. I view it as the last true FF with one hell of a soundtrack, it gets way to much hate but I do hate wakka and everything about him... But rest was awesome.

I like 12 and It took time to appreciate it but I'm a sticker for soundtracks and love or hate X, the soundtrack as always WAS what made final fantasy. Uematsu to me was irreplaceable, I been playing FF since the first release and Uematsu just brought the game to life and ever since he's been done it just never quite had that feel to me.

FFX gripped me from the very beginning. FFXII plopped me in an ugly, jaggy, featureless desert and asked me to use MMO-style no-thought "combat" for about two hours until I cried uncle. I was more amused than surprised to find out years later that my wife's reaction to playing the game back in the day was basically the exact same, for the exact same reasons.

I mean, it even happened to my beloved Growlanser, with Growlanser V, which is among the worst games I've ever played. There was this sudden shift towards just nudging your party towards enemies and watching them piroette everywhere while lights flashed and damage numbers popped off. It is and was trash, and a huge regression from the fun, sometimes puzzle-like turn-based battles of FFX, which are in my opinion still the very best in the series.

I do hate wakka

Wakka's a bro, okay? He ain't perfect, but that's the point.
