LTTP: Assassins Creed Shadows

I was pretty enamored for 15ish hours. Content is dry and boring AF. It's completely held up by visuals and hoping the ninja stuff gets better. When I realized it wasn't, I just gave up on it.

Bought Shadows for Switch 2 and was thoroughly satisfied with my purchase. Looks great for what it's running on. Thinking of getting it on sale for PS5 for higher fidelity.

Tried to get into it - maybe will go back, but it is boring and the plot is done to death these days.

Nearly as boring as the OP!

Sooo… is this actually worth at £30? Or is it that much of a disaster it should be "wait till it's free"?

it's not a disaster, if you like assassin's creed you'll like this, especially if you prefer stealth since it has the best stealth mechanics in the franchise.

I thought it was quite good. It has the same problem all of the longer RPG games has in that it's just too long but otherwise I liked a lot about it. The visuals are fantastic and the combat is pretty fun and has some diverse weapons you can use.

It's the best AC game to date…

yes it's really good, I enjoyed the heck of out it. 100+ hours.
Thanks gaf. I'll give it a shot as I have historically liked assassins creed. But the recent ones most particularly Valhalla LONG overstayed its welcome. Mirage was a far better game.

look you're not going to find historical accuracy or a memorable story or whatever players are searching for?

You'll get:

- a very optimized game,
- stunning world design: serene Japanese atmosphere
- the best AC gameplay, moveset for both the protagonists is fluid and silky, animations are extra smooth and everything feels responsive
- a fun story, nothing too serious, just go with the flow
- lot's of content albeit Ubisoft like but the combat, gameplay and world are so polished and fun I don't care
- DLC has actually cool bosses and story but you can skip and it later as it's quite expensive for little content

It's fun, it's fluid and beautiful. It's very well optimized. What more do you want? it's just fun.

Do you like AC? If you do, you'll like it. It's more of the same. The only reason Gaf has a hate boner for it is because of the whole Yasuke debacle. Otherwise, it has the same shortcomings as all the others since Odyssey and Gaf didn't mind those games.

I thought it was Assassin's Creed, beautiful graphics and art, attention to details for crafting a wonderful world, decent combat system, the best stealth to date, and a nice world to explore. The rest is the same ol, bad writing, awful English VAs, too long, boring and repetitive side content, etc.

Yah I held off principally due to the yasuke debate and Ubisofts handling of the production of the game both within the game and real world. I found it frankly pretty racist of them and did not want to support them at launch (far more deserving companies or indies)

£30 tho if it's decent im fine with.

Just asked my wife to set it going, and she yelled "do you mean black flag" 🤦‍♂️I forgot about bloody black flag, now I'm torn. I think the praise here for the stealth in shadows might tip it as I think that's what I'm in the mood for….but damn sailing the high seas again with the shanties is hella tempting.

I'll probably get Black Flag Resynced down the line. I just don't think there's enough for me to shell out full price on it. The original on PC with an unlocked frame rate still looks and plays great. Shadows is a brand new experience and at 30 pounds, I'd personally go for it if you like the RPG direction the series has taken since Origins. If not, ahoy matey!

Pros and cons….some of the rpg mechanics are good but much is lost due to the way they do enemy levelling and their monetisation, all the levelled loot becomes meaningless as it's "slightly better weapon of brown top3" as all the uniquely interesting stuff that could be fun unlockables is just a payment gate microtransaction. I do prefer the tighter experiences black flag offered and mirage returned to. 30-60hr is just such a sweeter spot than 100+ unless those 100 are exceptional and well crafted like Witcher, cyberpunk, deus ex etc. when it's bloat to drive a monetisation model with a story that is poorly told and paced, where you're not invested in the stories or characters it just becomes a chore after 40 hours and you want it to end.

I do hope they return to more contained experiences for the next mainline game (keeping some of the RPG narrative paths stuff tho would be nice tho…if they hire better writers)

You do have a good point tho about new experience vs rehash…with the latter still being at a premium. I think that makes the decision shadows. Thanks

Using AI to generate a post should result in a permaban. It's fucking ridiculous.
Is that due to the em dashes?
Our writers abhor that that's become a tell as there are many cases where they are the only grammatically correct thing to use. Sure you can use a comma or hyphen or a colon instead but for a properly trained writer those would be grammatically incorrect. EM dashes have very defined use cases. The ai's def do abuse them tho.

It's also so fucking lazy when u see it in ai posts as it means they didn't even bother to read and edit the output before posting. Ai can be great, but it's raw output without human editing or guidance is so often slop

This game is mad confusing. I booted it up last night after not having played in forever, im 30 hours in, I just want to do the main quest.

But for the life of me I cant figure out what the main quest is. I destroyed some research on a boat, which was like a big floating castle Naoe said.

And then I met some dude and now I have to help him, but in order to help him I have to find these targets in Settsu?

Also how do I know the targets I mean how the fuck do I know they are in Settsu nobody ever told Naoe.

Well I'm a few hours in and it already seems better than yotei with more memorable and interesting characters. Mechanics are fun…for now. Naoes voice acting is the weakest which is unfortunate, but she's at least likeable unlike the girl in yotei.

The first 10 hours are not representative of what's coming next. I was pretty excited during the first act. Then everygoes downhill after that story wise

The open nature and the story progression in Shadows is an absolute mess. It feels more like an MMO rather than a single player game. Its all so convoluted, you kill people without even knowing their background of the context. It's terrible game design

As is often the case with modern assassins creed, that's when the repetition and bloat sets in.

It's a shame her (I think) dad died so early, he was a very good character and well voiced,

Yes, first of all i really recommend you to play in Japanese because its 10 times better
Second, I hope that you enjoy the game, I did enjoy the gameplay because the combat, stealth and movement are among the best the franchise but I just warn you that I was pretty excited like you in the first act, but then the game all of sudden loses all the narrative, you are going from one place to another without context or any coherence and it becomes very frustrating

Anyway maybe you dont experience this but I am just warning that keep your expectations in check because the game its nothing like the first 8 to 10 hours
