Polygon: Nintendo is the good guy now

When did you last hear about dramatic Nintendo layoffs? And the company is certainly the last bastion of physical games, despite the fact that it has more to lose by persevering in that market. Its memory-chip-based game cards were far more expensive to manufacture than a Blu-ray disc even before the current memory shortages drove chip prices through the roof. All of a sudden, even the hated game-key cards don't look so bad; they may not have the data on the card, but they're not locked to a license, and you can sell or trade them like any other object that you actually, you know, own.

Nintendo will save us all!

Not even close. I wont consider Nintendo a good guy till I can play their cellphone games on my actual cellphone.

Edit-My GOD I'm sick of seeing Polygon getting posted on this forum.

Nintendo is the greatest company in the world and people should acknowledge that.

Also polygon is the worst. They just said RDR2 was bad.

They are at least always honest and upfront about things.
There is no good in business, just profit.
But when they announced the GKC everybody was hating, they made it possible to share your digital license which looked ridiculous but seeing whats happening now they are the only one who has the ability to share digital games without account sharing

None of them are the good guy. None of these companies care about you. They aren't your friend, all they care about is money. They are businesses ffs

Better to say Nintendo is just less bad, than the "good guy".

They were the first to push $80 games, when their stuff is objectively lower budget, and they lock retro content behind a sub instead of an ala-carte purchase option.

But at least they make better games I guess, and they're more distinct in the kind of games they make than the other 2.

They are not, their software prices are outrageous.
Their physical support already is reduced to licences on a cartridge.
They're simply behind the curve in this kind of stuff.

They're the best of the 3 and it's not close. Cheapest console, cheapest online, and the best when it comes to game ownership.

As much as I like nintendo no they aren't the good guy all of them are a business out to make money. However they aren't quite as bad as the others either, it's funny how everything's going to shit yet nintendo just chugging along doing their own thing totally unaffected by all this doom.

On a plus side of Sony fucking everyone over it now leaves nintendo with even more shelf space for their games at retail lol.

They charge 20 dollars a year for NSO and it has cloud saves. The first party games are coming quickly and the og switch hardware revolutionized the industry. They gave their people 10% raises when MS and Sony fired everyone. Even the game key card thing wasn't evil in design. It was because the carts can't fit the full games since Switch 2 games are quicker. The game key cards are still account agnostic and can be played as a guest. They are proper bearerbonds.

They are good so far.

You guys really need to stop doing this. It's stupid AF and that clickbait article is ridiculous.
These companies are not your friends. Even with the current events in the industry, Nintendo is still Nintendo.

I guess people don't remember Nintendo's crusade to shut down every emulator and remove every one of their ROM's out there.

They sue people just for the fun of it.

Companies are neither good nor bad. Nintendo's legal division is still a sack of shit and their upper management is still too weak to push back against their aging Japanese investors who are still stuck in the 1960s on how to run things.

They've always done this but it got really bad when Tropical Haze (creators of Yuzu and Citra) were caught red handed getting ROMs illegally weeks early and pirating those ROMs on their discord, really setting back emulation for profit.

I don't know if I would consider Nintendo the "good guy". Their lawyers were lobbing disingenuous lawsuits at Mom and Pop supermarkets in third world countries not too long ago, and they nuked all of our eshop purchases during the Wii and 3DS era with no efforts made towards backwards compatibility for those titles.

They're just the best available option in a list of bad choices for physical game preservation.

Nintendo are built around their mascots. They CANNOT allow use of their mascots in any capacity and keep their business. If a company knowingly lets others build businesses around its IP for years, that can come back to haunt them. They do not hate their fans, lol. When they knowingly let others use your mascot it weakens their position in court. They have to operate in every court in the world too so the worst law for that is how they set their policy.

In court the first thing defendants do to Nintendo is try to say that that they tolerated the use of the IP and because Nintendo knew that the defendant invested in the business based on Nintendo's IP but waited X number of days to file suit. That X number matters to the judge.

A logo example is easier. Imagine you own the Nintendo logo and you see companies putting it on T-shirts. You complain online, you know it is happening, but you never actually do anything about it. Then five years later you sue. The other side is obviously going to say, "You knew about this, you were okay with it. People built businesses around this while you knew, why are you only complaining now." That does not automatically mean you lose but you have a lower chance to win.

Nintendo is more exposed to this than most companies because its IP. It is Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Kirby, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong, ect, those characters are constantly copied and used to drive traffic. Fucking DRUGS are sold with Mario faces on them.

That is why they come down so hard. The fans are of course allowed to dislike it but I fear they don't understand it at all. As bad as Nintendo is there are still companies that will put out a game they say is "Pokemon with guns." Even though people know it may be risky they love Nintendo IP so much they will copy it anyway so Nintendo has to have its head on a swivel.

I was vocal about Nintendo's anti-consumer pricing with $80 games, but compared to Sony now, it's like the difference between someone who insults you versus someone who says they will outright rob you.

NGL, albeit you have to go a long way back, I think Nintendo has done more things that have pissed me off even compared to Xbox.

I think this generation signals one thing: the platform holders aren't the good guys, or the big dogs anymore. They're becoming irrelevant and the games are speaking true to that.

You gotta love living in the hot take era of news media.

Get this man on camera with Stephen A. before they both run for president.
At this point it's difficult to even call it hot takes for news articals.

It's just tweet blurbs that im sure are hoping to land some viewers.

It all reeks of desperation.

Also...the sue happy company that sells below substandard pokemon games that tries to copyright certain game mechanics....

No. None of them are good guys.

Like I said in the other thread .. if their hardware wasn't so dogshit for a home console (dont care about portable) I could easily consider going nintendo , but right now for me is not worth it because third party support is just horrible with its limitations.
