FIFA World Cup 2026 - It's Called Football, Not Soccer!

Honestly, I think people are making this a bigger deal than it needs to be. Most people agree the red card was rubbish, but they also agree there was still a foul. The issue is with FIFA's rules and transparency around how they decided to handle it.
You should read the press around the world - its a big deal in all quarters. On field decisions whether we feel that they're correct or incorrect (and bookings for fouls/dangerous play are always arguable ) cannot be suspended/rescinded. If we open it to review immediately after a game it becomes a minefield and open to occurences such as the one being discussed, in which an intervention by a government has resulted in overturning a decision. If we permit this, then the game is shot/cooked.

You are aruging a completely different point. If Balgon is guilty which he is according to FIFA and the red card still stands (its just suspended?) then any other red card should be suspended as well regardless of what you or I think of any infringement.

Im not emotional btw, we are not playing the usa lol. Fully used to red and yellow cards, just not fifa making shit up as they please.

You want FIFA held to a higher standard. In more ways than one. I agree with you. So keep that fire in your belly over this moment to push for that. Tell FIFA to be more transparent and set a higher protocol bar for issuing red cards and suspending someone. My point from the very beginning is that people should use this moment, which apparently has a lot of panties in a twist, to push for it. The only actual disagreement you and I have is when something should have happened. Well, the reality is it didn't happen the way you think it should. It happened in the middle of a tournament. That has people pissed. Good. Now take that energy into pushing for changes.

EDIT: Also, England isn't playing the USA.... yet :messenger_beaming:

....nor do I suspect we will :messenger_crying:

Absolute shit show. I find it a red card because it was serious foul. Intentional or not doesn't matter because if his ankle got dislocated, people would've shut the fuck up and doesn't bring up the "intentional or not" argument

Again, you have the right to appeal. When your appeal gets accepted, then the card gets overruled. You don't go and fucking drop a card out of your arse when the US didn't even appeal for it. But yeah, it's okay to bend the rules I guess.
It was wasn't a red there was zero intent and it wasn't reckless.

They don't have the right to appeal either, well not until yesterday apparently lol.

Pepple have there panties in a twist because suspending the card is retarded and makes a mockery of the game. Change the rules to being able to appeal against a one game ban, not make stuff up to suit.

And if his ankle got dislocated from the unintentional dangerous foul then what? This is not new. It happened before and it's always a red card. We can agree to disgaree

The job of the press is to magnify controversy because controversy makes money. As for Trump, I'll believe it when I see it confirmed through official government channels. He's taken credit for a lot of things in the past that ultimately turned out not to be true. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

To be fair, the officiating I've seen and heard is making a mockery of the game as well. Also, the drama queen flopping on the ground because someone's hand brushed against them doesn't help.

I mean everyone saw unfair results in games. But the rules are clear: the referees are the one deciding the outcome of each game. Maradona's "hand of God" helping him to score, tne infamous ball that bounces on the line in the WC game between England and Germany, Thierry Henry having France qualified against Ireland in 2014 by holding the ball with his hands, etc.

But none of these games got a call afterwards from a politician to have the outcome of the game changed.

The ref's and var have been poor this tournament we can agree on that.

This is my first time paying any real attention, but from an outsider's perspective the officiating has been a joke. I'm glad to know that thought lines up with people who have been watching it for a while.

The advertising board last night took out Henderson and broke his arm wasn't intentional and i bet they are still sponsoring the next game. This madness needs to end.

We have lots of officials from lots of different countries with slightly different ways of doing things. With the advent of video replays it seems to have magnified things a lot. Obviously they are briefed by Fifa before tournaments but still the consistency is terrible

Then he can use his hands

Ha well yes that's true, although I can't see how a federation alone would have sway to overturn a contentious card decision.

This is why I would spend summers in South Europe if I was financially independent. I love this style of living where everyone stays up late enjoying life. Whenever I come back home from a trip there it feels so depressing to walk through my city in the evening and basically everything is closed. And you can't even buy a bear from a stand and walk around.
Only because I know Eurofolk just love puns and the like...

Personally, I'd be more inclined to push for more overturns of bad calls instead of just accepting that players can be forced to miss entire games from shoddy officiating.

It's the most "subjective" sport on the planet, and always has been.

Imagine they put this much energy into rape gangs and every other atrocity like they do the "bread and circus."

Bunch of bards, nothing more.

"The penalty shot shooter has to be the guy who got fouled" lol what if his legs are broken?
It's not exactly a new (nor bad) idea, I think I've heard Zlatan talking about that recently.
Could be bad for people trying to score a header in a corner kick though, if they're not good strikers they could be targeted more often.

'Tis the game of the people sir - the thread that binds us all, and its integrety shall not be broken unwarranted political intervition.

If there's one event where people put aside their differences and come together its the world cup (over here at least, and I imagine a number of nations around the world). Its our moment of kicking the football in no mans land for just a few weeks every 4 years. It would be a shame if someone came along and fucked that up as well.

That's why people are up in arms (I think)

It wouldn't be the world's bread and circus without a scandal. This is nothing new, should be used to it by now.

It struck me after watching several World Cup matches that FIFA soccer is the perfect sport for....European elites.

Why is that?

Well, because this is an international sport where many of the rules are...shall we say as politely as possible...indeterminate.

The two biggest examples of this:

1. Offsides - there IS no offsides line marked on the field. Whether or not a player is offsides is determined often only AFTER a goal has been scored and the fans of the scoring team have been celebrating like crazy for several minutes. Then a video replay review determines one of the players on the scoring team was 'offsides' and the goal is taken off the board.

So the offsides line moves around, there's no way to determine it in advance, which is why it's not marked on the field. Pretty cool, huh? The line is where the officials TELL YOU IT IS. At that given moment.

For a stellar example of how this works, review this segment from the game between Portugal & Croatia.

2. The game clock - nobody seems to know how long a game will last. The clock is flexible. Some games keep having 'extra time' added to the clock, and some games end abruptly. One team asks for more time, it is granted; another team asks for more time and is denied.

The game doesn't really 'end' until the officials SAY IT IS ENDED.

I've watched both cause massive controversies over the past few days.

European fans are USED to their sports officials doing this crap?

Americans would NEVER put up with shit like this in their sports.

The officials are gonna determine the outcome of games based on a moving line only they can see? The officials are gonna determine how long the game lasts, and if they wanna add another 10 minutes, they will?

Americans would say screw that shit, put a line on the field everyone can see, and set a real limite to game time using the clock and stop adding more minutes every time you feel like it.

Huge difference in mindset for Americans, hence our frustration.

rooting for USA! not because im american, but there is too much UEFA teams already!

I also love more hosts shithousery, not that USA is good enough to win it all, but just enough to leave some chaos like the koreans, shitty team with rigged help

Ah - I see you don't like football/soccer then. That's okay, we're not all perfect.

In football there are scandals, then there are scandals. We accept the former, however not the latter, and this particular one is most certainly deserved of italics

Yes, yes, yes. Put a line on the field and stop acting like stopping the clock after a goal or during a break and then resuming it when play starts again is somehow the realm of gods in which man shall not tread.

It's really sad seeing some sports people and reporters go from outraged over the red card to outraged it was suspended just because Trump had a hand in it and they hate Trump. Ultimately a terrible call was corrected and to me that's all I care about.
