FIFA World Cup 2026 - It's Called Football, Not Soccer!

A bit too late but:

Nyland "Yo lo pego" (I'll catch it)
Nyland "Yo lo pego" (Didn't get the second part. But i suspect that it was something like "Estas fora como Paraguay" "You're out like Paraguay")
Neymar "Donde quieres" (Where do you want?)

And yes, Neymar got a textbook kick
Corruption penalty anyway. 2 min over the already 7 min stoppage time. Time to go home Brazil.

We did it men. To anyone who stayed up, todays pain will be well worth it.

I'm in Europe now and I do not know how people here stay up to watch these games. I tried to stay up to watch Brazil England (no bars open where I am currently I could find), made it to about 2:45 and passed out. So I could have watched the first half had it not gotten delayed.

I'm working nightshift so its easy for me, but for England fans in general no way could you sleep knowing a game as big as tonight was happening. The casuals maybe.

After the red card i thought we were going to choke but the lads did something I didn't this team had in them. I'm so happy right now. They did us proud, even if they lost I'd still feel the same. Well, not quite :messenger_sunglasses:

Better get used to it. People from European countries love football. You never know until you visit and see for yourself. Even I myself watch a lot of matches, and I'm far from the biggest fan (I like hockey the most, on ice that is). Sports overall is great for fraternizing. Nothing is more fun than to share interests with other people, no matter where the hell they are from.
Respect a good match where both teams fight till the very end without being assholes. That's why I wasn't mad when we lost to Morocco this tournament. They simply played better.

I'm not staying up till 3:00 AM, though. 1:00AM on a Thursday - Friday (I work from home on Fridays so doesn't matter) to Saturday - Sunday? Sure. But I go to sleep right after and read/post on GAF after I had my sleep.

That's a terrible take and not really how football/soccer works though. Best players having red cards and couldn't play the most important matches are part of the competition.

But I guess if you have "call a friend" in "Who wants to be a millionaire", why not having it in Fifa World Cup.

Hopefully Starmer will call Fifa as well and get our red suspended.

Thats how it works right?

I'm still awake. I woke up at 8am on Sunday morning. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Expected nothing less from FIFA, tbh.
Which is funny cause Infantino was named president of Fifa after the corruption scandal, to have a new start. But the way he handled Qatar world cup, and his whole buddy-time with Trump in Non-Fifa events, you're like "okay"

Game has gone. Modern football has far too much corruption at the highest levels.

Sorry to US Gaf, but I now want Belgium to win. Not just win, but absolutely destroy the US. Nothing personal, but I am a waffle munching Belgium fan for the next 24 hours.

However, Belgium have been pretty shite and I wouldn't be surprised if they lose.

Well good thing we have these extended highlight reels. What a great match! Are you out of your mind my boy Jude? 2 goals in 2 mins just like that wtf :D

Looks like the main narrative is forming for this cup, no fairy tale ending, only tears for the old legends we grew up with… neur, van dijk, neymar, jimenez, de bruyne next, hams rodrigez and salah, messi will probably last 1 more round before getting crushed by kane or haaland

Just seen the highlights of England-Mexico. Are all our resident Brits OK? I had flashbacks of the Italy vs Netherlands game at Euro 2000, same vibes.
I woulda loved to watch it live, but it was way too late at night.

Never watched a more nerve racking match!

Was defiantly worth staying up that late, here's to Saturday which will likely be another amazing game.

Yesterday's decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line.

Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition. Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted. It is a principle embedded in regulations, which cannot be made subject to exceptions, let alone in the middle of a tournament where several other players have been in the same situation and regularly served their suspension.

When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined. Equally, such decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament, where similar situations will now require an equal treatment, to the detriment of the competition.

Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws. A tournament is never a pure standalone and, if the tournament in question is the World Cup, it has the power to drive positive or negative consequences on the game as a whole.

We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.

Translation:

It doesn't hurt one bit. Neymar was born with the kind of talent that one in a billion has, and he chose to squander it on whisky, poker, and women. He never committed to anything, never took responsibility for anything. He spent half his career injured because he has the physical conditioning and stamina of a drunkard, he insisted on selling his image more through off-field controversies than through effort on the field and, when he realized he couldn't achieve anything with that, he rigged Santos and the CBF.On top of everything, he's spoiled, disrespectful, and has zero fair play. A delinquent who hijacked our jersey for over a decade and fed a terrible culture into our football. It's finally over.

Good morning, lads.

You know, we all knew Brazil would not go ahead in this WC. I'm glad it was Norway. Good team, and the friendliest, nicest guy in this tournament. I'm Haaland's fan. Dude is amazing.

And what does he want? for red cards to go away? that select players get allowed back in big tournaments?

Brazil been just a name for over 15 years. A name made by warriors gets shamed by donkeys. Haaland is a really nice guy and down to earth. Watch his YouTube channel

They were really all from south america? lol

This cup has corruption written all over it. So many controversial stuff. Never seen something like this before in any other world cup I've watched since 98.
Mexico are central America though? Refs haven't been great thoughout the whole tournament but i don't see an issue there, they have to come from somewhere.
