Comparing PS5 output to PS4

Notable games either developed by a Sony-owned studio or published by Sony/SIE. Excluding third-party-published timed exclusives.
Tricky with cross-gen titles, so added to both?
Have I missed anything notable?

PS4
  • 2013 - Killzone: Shadow Fall, Resogun
  • 2014 - inFamous Second Son, inFamous First Light, Driveclub
  • 2015 - Bloodborne, Until Dawn, The Order: 1886
  • 2016 - Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian
  • 2017 - Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo Sport, Gravity Rush 2, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
  • 2018 - God of War, Shadow of the Colossus remake, Spiderman, Detroit: Become Human
  • 2019 - Days Gone, Death Stranding
  • 2020 - The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • 2022 - Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, God of War Ragnorok

PS5
  • 2020 - Demon's Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • 2021 - Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • 2022 - Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, God of War Ragnarok
  • 2023 - Spider-Man 2
  • 2024 - Astro Bot, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade
  • 2025 - Ghost of Yōtei, Death Stranding 2
  • 2026 - Saros, Wolverine, Marvel Token
  • 2027 - God of War: Lulzfey

Thoughts?

For my tastes PS5 is giga weak. Too many safe, more-of-the-same sequels to PS4 games. Absence of major studios and too much GAAS chasing.
Back half of PS4 was loaded, 2016-20 being peak. But doesn't look like PS5 is going to get that same late-gen rescue.

Carried by third parties like Capgod.

PS5 wins for correcting that alone, I'd say.

Shouldn't Spider-Man: Miles Morale, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, and God of War Ragnarok all be counted in the PS4's favor, as those are just cross-gen PS4 titles?

Yeah.

The PS5's lineup would look a lot stronger in retrospect if some of the second party adjacent stuff like Stellar Blade stayed true exclusives.

Late PS5 lineup actually has some AAA true exclusive games coming that don't look too bad. I would say Astro Bot was the first of them.

My overall playtime on my PS5 was <100 hours in the 5 years I owned one, of which ~70 hours were the Demon`s Souls remake.
I put more than double my total PS5 playtime in Bloodborne alone on the PS4....
Tastes vary ofc, but to me the PS5 was a total dud since I use consoles as first-party only machines and Sony`s output this gen was garbage imho.

All in all, both lists are pretty slim, but the PS4 one was still significantly meatier over a 5-year span.

You mentioned GT7 for PS5 but not GT Sport for PS4?

So you mention remakes but not always, you mention expansions/stand alones but not always and you mention third party-made exlusives but not always.

Your list is not consistent at all

It's called having standards for what feels good to play.

You should try it.
Majority of people don't care about 30fps or 60fps because most people can't tell millisecond button press differences. They either suck it up and get use to it by changing the timing of their input, or, they don't even notice an issue with input at all.

It's not standards, it's personal preference. You prefer 60fps or higher because you notice a difference of input.

PS 1 to 4 were great generations to own Sony consoles, the PS5 is more like a PS4 PRO PRO.... Sony's output is lackluster and the hobby is getting way too expensive.

I should have moved on to 100% PC after 2020 (this is where I have done over 80% of my gaming in recent history).

Everyone who has seen the option don't need to toggle often to see the difference, even from 60 to higher fps it's pretty obvious with the naked eye.

My 9yo son thought Horizon Forbidden West was broken the first time he started it in 30fps "quality" mode. We had to have a discussion.

And my son enjoys higher end graphics more so he'll use 30fps quality mode and not care. He notices the difference, just doesn't care. Both our examples are anecdotal.
Things like Hogwart's Legacy selling insanely well on Switch, and the top 10 GPUs in the Steam survey having an 8GB edition (sans the fourth place 12GB 5070) or being 8GB only are more like proof that frame rate is not that important to the average person who wants to play video games.

If GTA VI is 30fps only, you think that's going to stop the average person from buying it? You think they'll complain about it at all? Input lag is not something most people notice unless it's extreme.

PS5's output has been one of the reasons I'm bowing out of the PS6. There's no reason to think it's going to get better. AAA First Party Titles are too few and far between now, and a lot of them are kinda samey.

It really is pathetic. Remember when we got all of the following exclusives in a single generation?

  • Demon's Souls
  • Tokyo Jungle
  • Flow
  • Flower
  • Journey
  • God of War III
  • God of War Ascension
  • Killzone 2 - 3
  • Uncharted 1-3
  • TLoU
  • MAG
  • Heavenly Sword
  • LittleBigPlanet 1-2
  • Resistance 1-3
  • Infamous 1-2
  • 3D Dot Game Heroes
  • Echochrome
  • Lair
  • The Last Guy
  • LocoRoco
  • Noby Noby Boy
  • MGS4
  • 3 MotorStorms
  • PixelJunk Eden
  • Puppeteer
  • Folklore
  • Warhawk
  • Starhawk
  • Siren: Blood Curse
  • 5 Ratchet & Clank games
  • Lumines Supernova
  • Drakengard 3
  • Hot Shots 5
  • Twisted Metal
  • Gran Turismo 5 + 6
  • White Knight Chronicles I & II
  • Heavy Rain
  • SOCOM 4
I don't think we'll see this kind of variety, quality, and volume from Sony ever again.

Real PS4/PS5 exclusives :
I mean sure, by that logic - the only big 1st party exclusive PS2 got was GT3/4.

New IPs in red.
This actually is a more interesting metric, and it feels that way too. It's not that PS4 output was terribly original (do the new IP check in PS2 era and it'll be a sea of red in comparison) but at least PS4 still had some of that spark. AAA was always risk averse - but its reached new lows with how bad it's been this generation (and that includes 3rd parties).

How could you miss the games of the generation?

Dreams
Gran Turismo Sport
MediEvil
Knack
Knack 2

I'd include these Vita ports. The PS4 is where they found most of their life.
Tearaway
Gravity Rush

I'd also include SM Miles Morales, HZD FW, GOW Rag, GT7. Them being cross gen makes the PS5 feel less special.

PS5 is a sequel machine.

In my post, the only new PS5 high selling banger will be Wolverine (assuming it sells a ton like Spiderman). And it's 6 years into the generation. Returnal, Saros, Astrobot and even Stellar Blade werent huge sellers. SB wasnt even made by Sony too. They were publisher.

PS4 had a good mix of sequels and big new IPs like Horizon, Spidey, GoT, DG. And huge fans for Bloodborne (which sales wise was decent but not spectacular).

The PS4 generation had soul. So many good games and that includes The Order 1886 too.

PS5 has been far too safe since its inception and nothing really gets the blood pumping for me anymore.

For me it's:

Bloodborne
Until Dawn
Uncharted 4
The Last Guardian
Uncharted: Lost Legacy
God of War
Shadow of the Colossus remake
Spiderman
Detroit
Death Stranding
The Last of Us 2 (I haven't played but presume it's great)

VS

Demons Souls remake
Returnal
Astro Bot
Helldivers 2 (when it's not broken)
Death Stranding 2 (I presume)
Saris (I presume)

Didn't really care for a lot of the follow ups like Miles Morales and Ragnarok. I will say the few really excellent exclusives are worth a PS5 for, but PS4 is the best Sony console since PS2 (and IMO might be better). PS5 is the best way to play PS4 games for sure, which is mostly how I used it aside from 3rd party games.

GT7 is on PS4 as well.

PS4 had much stronger first party line up.
