Have you ever "skipped" a console generation?

Skipped a console generation before?

I've owned multiple consoles (plus handhelds and personal computers) each gen since the dawn of time.

I reckon the Spectrum 48K and C64 was my favourite period. I had the Spectrum 48K in my bedroom (the first system I could call my own) and the C64 which was the family machine downstairs.

I had a paper round at the time, and every weekend I'd grab my pay and head to the local game-store for a Mastertronic game for either £1.99 or £2.99. There were some absolute crackers like Kickstart.

let's see...

First Generation: Before my time, never even seen any of them in person.

Second Generation: Same.

Third Generation: Slightly before my time. I've used an og Nintendo a few times at older cousins houses back in the day and stuff, but never owned one.

Fourth Generation: We owned a Super Nintendo that we got from a thrift store. Also I owned a Game Boy.

Fifth Generation: We owned a Nintendo 64 also from a thrift store.

Sixth Generation: We owned an original Xbox from a thrift store, and much later I owned a slim Playstation 2.

Seventh Generation: We owned an Xbox 360, and I owned a Playstation 3, a Nintendo DSi, and a Nintendo Wii.

Eighth Generation: I owned a 3ds. I own a Switch Lite.

Ninth Generation: None, but I plan to get a Switch 2 Lite when it comes out.

Also wow, the Switch and Wii U are the same gen? And the Switch 2 isn't even on this chart. What is this anti-Nintendo :bullshit lol :messenger_angry:

Kind of. Between the last half of PS2 and the first half of PS3 a mix of PC gaming and being busy IRL led to me missing out on a ton of bangers, but thanks to retro handhelds I've been able to catch up on some PS2 games at least.

Got a Master System at christmas 1987.

Skipped Mega Drive/Genesis era because my parents thought a Master System was enough. I managed to convince them to get me a Game Boy though.

Got a PC in 1993 that I upgraded twice during the following 12 years.

Skipped Saturn era.
Skipped Dreamcast/Xbox era.

Mostly skipped Xbox 360 era, but got a Wii in 2010 to play Sin & Punishment Star Successor.

Got an Xbox One in 2015, an Xbox One S in 2016, an Xbox One X in 2019, an Xbox Series X in 2022, another Series X (Galaxy Black) in 2024, and a third Series X (White) in 2025.

From the SNES and Genesis. Out of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. The only consoles I skipped were the Saturn and Series X. I still don't have a Switch 2, but I've been playing my Switch a lot. I do wonder if Nintendo will force you to upgrade for the next Zelda. I can totally see the next BIG Mario game being Switch 2 only.

Back when the PS3 came out I took out a Best Buy credit card and bought a PS3 60 GB with Resistance Fall of Man. It came out to be $700. I felt like that was a lot of money back then. Now a days that's not even going to cover the cost of the base model. That's how much my PS5 Pro was.

I had a console on all generations, from several makers. Atari, Sega, PlayStation, Nintendo. The current gen is the first I have skipped so far.

Not yet, but I have skipped a generation's worth of years. From 2010 to 2017 I was PC gaming and skipped the entire back half of 6th gen and didn't bother with 7th gen until I got back into console gaming with the Switch and PS4 Pro.

I love how so many are convinced they'll be skipping PS6 because of the recent atrocities (somebody actually compared Sony to Hitler lol). You can almost guarantee that the pack in game will be a Bloodborne remake.

I'm looking forward to being the only one on Gaf playing it. 😆

I got to play
- Doom
- Doom 2
- Heretic
- Hexen
- Quake
- Quake 2
- Quake 3
- Unreal
- Warcraft
- Warcraft 2
- Command & Conquer
- Starcraft
- Age of Empires
- Diablo
- Baldur's Gate
- Heroes of Might & Magic
and many, many more the way these games were meant to be played.

I started from 3rd generation 'NES', skipped 4th gen and bought the first PC on 5th gen and envied PS1 owners but have no regret at all, then started being consistent form 6th gen to this date.

So did I mate, as well as all the Sega classics on Saturn and Dreamcast.

No, but I almost did. Went NES -> Genesis (friend has SNES) to multiple PCs. PC got almost all my playtime after that. I got a PSX a few months before the PS2 was released and played through a crazy amount of things I missed.

After that I bought everything, though some like the One X were what I got at the end of the life. We'll see what happens with the next generation. I barely touch the consoles now. PC plays things better, so it has to be an exclusive that I really want. And most modern games just aren't that interesting, I'd rather play pinball.

I'm skipping PS5, but I still have a Switch 1. Does that count?

My console history:

PS1
PS2
Xbox
PSP
Wii
PS3
2DS
PS Vita
WiiU
PS4 Pro
Switch Lite

Then finally moved to PC as main platform.

No but with the PS6/Switch 2 this will be the first time I skip it on release.

I imagine I will eventually get a Switch 2 but I'm done with PlayStation

After the 16 bit gen and the 1.5 gen that was attached to it I decided to stick to one console per gen and ride that fucker to the end.

What I realized was even though I could afford all the consoles, I could not afford all the games and time it took to play them. It was better to get the full experience from one console and it was cheaper.

The first console i had was an N64.
(I was around during NES and SNES, but my parents didn't want to spend money on them)
Since n64 i have had all Nintendo consoles. And since PS2 i also had all Sony generations.
I had a 360 and i have a Series X, but I skipped Xbox One.

Genesis and SNES… sort of.
I didn't own them while they were current. I did play them a ton at friends houses though so I never felt like I was missing out

Never had a console until PS1(games too expensive vs computer games), got PS2 soon after release then went PC picking up later consoles for exclusives once the consoles were cheap, PS3 and PS4.
No interest in PS5 as Sony exclusives have become junk and it keeps increasing in price lol.

Never interested in anything M$, would leave Windows in a heartbeat if Linux/SteamOS supported NVidia well

I've had at least one console from every generation. I've owned multiple consoles per generation since the late 1980's. I haven't owned stuff like 3DO or Neo Geo, but I've had pretty much everything from Atari, Nintendo, Sega, Sony and Microsoft at one time or another. I've just always loved video games. I don't care who makes hardware if I can afford it and it has games I want to play.

No, I've had at least one console in a given gen since the NES, and multiple consoles since the PS2 era.

Next generation will probably be the first in a while that I go back down to one console though, and that will probably be the Switch 2 OLED version. Otherwise not much interest in Sony or Microsoft, their platforms are worse, the pricing for the hardware is worse for something that only plays games, and they lack killer app titles I can't just get somewhere else.

I've owned way too many consoles since the early 90s.
It's not just that I never skipped a gen. I've never skipped a console from the major players.
This current Xbox is the first time I don't own all the big systems.
I've always had gaming capable PC since 1996 as well.

As I kid I never did sports or other costly things, so getting me a new console every other year wasn't a big ask.
As an adult I also don't care about sports, or other costly things. So buying a new console every other year still isn't a big ask.
