Sony is our enemy now?

I'm waiting to receive my computer after years of not using a PC.

But it's true that the PC community on NeoGAF is like a group of vegans protesting outside a slaughterhouse.

I don't know how many threads about Sony have been started lately, but some people really ought to see a therapist and rethink their obsession with Sony PlayStation.

I have empathy for physical game collectors from the recent news, but I don't ever see a company as "an enemy".

We need a megathread or something. This is mentally burning me out and I'm not even affected by the news lol

They never was your friend, but a mutual respect use to be a thing.
Sadly gamers have been taking in the ass and loving it so much they thought they was invincible to the rest of us.
They were wrong

They were always out for their bottom line like all companies. It doesnt make them the enemy but it they never were our friend. If this truly does end up affecting their money they might reverse it.

None of these corporations are your friend. They might appear like that with their pleasant language to the public, but underneath all of that is a lot manipulation and arrogance. They couldn't give two shits about someone like you.

If they could vacuum your wallet for cash, they wouldn't hesitate for a second. The problem for them is that the overton window of acceptance hasn't reached that grey zone yet to their advantage.

Sony just got overwhelmingly full of hubris being a dominant player on the market and overplayed their hand while assuming this wouldn't cause much of stir. None of these super bureacratic corpos are your buddy. If anything, the people up top don't even know you exist and couldn't care less what you think.

The problem for the PlayStation 4/5 physical game collector is that the moment the PlayStation 6 launches, they need to keep their PlayStation 5 (specifically the disc-drive version) in perfect condition.

Otherwise, they're absolutely screwed.

Yes. Now protest the end of physical games by switching to an all digital platform on pc.
People go to PC because if digital is all you got then you could at least choose to go where digital is good.

A closed platform and only having one store is not all that appealing if you're used to shop around for the lowest price on physical games.

I know it sounds funny, but the worse sony games/exclusives become, the less we will think of sony as enemy, and more as of another xbox, aka irrelevant company(ms could increase xbox price to 2k usd+, announce their next console not only alldigital but literal cloud/streaming only and barely any1 would care, thats how numb we became to what they offer, especially that everything comes on pc anyways ;)

Now imagine this alternative future where sony this gen makes sure they gave us 30+ high quality exclusives(think genuine 85+ meta w/o brownie points for being woke or published by allpowerful platform holder), and by next gen/2028 and their ps6 even more of such games are in the works and u know u really gonna miss out on tons of fun if u dont bend the knee to their anticonsumer practices...

But now and especially next gen when most of their IPs are either destroyed or heavily dmged the pain wont be that bad, ofc not playing another astro and gt8 will feel awful but other than that if sony keeps on the path they currently walking, most of their exclusives will be not of quality we want or are used to(for the most part, rare exceptions defo will happen).

"Now"?!

They are since the PS3 announcement. Difference is that they felt the pain before the launch, and with competition one year ahead

They redeemed by mid PS3 life with great games and same price console, but things only changed after Xbox started making shit moves like the Kinect, so they took advantage by doing not so bad moves, like the PS Move. By PS4 announcement days things started looking bad, with Plus being obligatory, lack of retrocompability, and a controller that the battery sucks, but Xbox was so shitty that people looked at Sony as the good guys

They're the bad guys from a long time now

This. People need to educate themselves on the underlying issues in the domains of customer rights, preservation, digital sovereignty and ownership in the digital age. The only stable long term solution is free and open source software, not the games but the infrastructure supporting it. No private entity should be able to control as much as is the case today in the console space.
They're effectively a 3rd party publisher and they need to address that before it's too late.

Are we at the point where, just like when someone mentions an Xbox, and / or anything, or anyone related to it, there will be reactions with countless laughing emojis?
The hate and mockery that Xbox has been receiving for years will never be matched by Sony. That alone is already due to the sheer number of fans. I always have the feeling that when someone here writes that they are an Xbox fan, people look at them with more disgust than at someone infected with COVID sneezing at a buffet.

You mean open digital platform is the same as the walled garden monopoly that sony is offering?
So people are now willing to buy from others stores than steam?

To be clear, I actually think it's good to put pressure on Sony. Not like they have competition to put pressure on them otherwise.

Nothing about how Sony does business has changed in my lifetime. Someone can probably cue up the greatest hits with rootkits, proprietary everything, PSN fiascos, customer support disasters etc. The PS4 they were savvy opportunists, but we've got enough leaked docs to see they've been talking about this for as long as Xbox has. They just weren't stupid enough to say it and probably couched it after seeing the response Xbox got. The PS6 BOM being as disastrous as it is made them bust this back out. They have a lot more data and trends to support it than when Xbox tried on the Bone.

What you guys need to think about is how easily this case in made during internal debates within PlayStation. The measurables are very enticing. It sounds like it has been years since they have even had a working contingent of people in the company on the side of keeping the disc printing business going. They were just waiting to announce. Dump it after GTA VI digital reveal and the same week as Studio Canal to let it all blow well over before the PS6 reveal. The disc drive will be an old, beating a dead horse news that people will be tired of hearing about.

There are still Sony products I would buy. Hell even a PS6. I wouldn't invest in a massive PS6 library, but it's not totally off my table as a tertiary gaming device. Best NC headphones on the market. My favorite cameras too. Best aftermarket audiophile car stereo mfg left on the planet as well (don't @ me Pioneer).

about 80% of people who complained about the dickless future of PlayStation, just bought a dickless GTA VI on PS5 so.. I dunno..

The issue here was never physical vs. digital vs. streaming.. that's just a red herring designed to blur folk from the true war that's going on. DR-fucking-M, and the sheer lack of digital consumer rights in our space.

That is what must be contested at all costs. Stop Killing Games is the first real push here, but we need many others.

Honestly, I don't understand how gamers as a community haven't all bandied together to take these corporates down.

I don't even think it'd be that hard. You only really need to get the EU to put laws in place. The rest will follow.

Sony aren't our friends, they just are here to try and sell us stuff. Stuff they can turn a profit on.

Anyone who makes it out to be more than that is mentally retarded and doesn't understand the way the world works.

As to all the controversy, people have been hating on Playstation since 1995, usually because they have a weird attachment to another platform and are working with the zero-sum mentality where the only way their side can win, is for another to fail. Again demonstrating minimal understanding of how the industry works.

They sort of became my enemy when they shut down Japan Studio, moved to California, and basically Westernized the whole company. I still buy third party games, but not much in the way of first party games.

I mean, with this whole negative response to their recent announcements with digital-only future, well, is that it?

Are we at the point where, just like when someone mentions an Xbox, and / or anything, or anyone related to it, there will be reactions with countless laughing emojis?
Does it hurts now that affects Sony too?

Companies are. Try think twice before licking any company balls. They are not your friend.
Well, we are customers. Last I checked a customer isn't a slave, we are entitled to respect from these companies.
