FIFA World Cup 2026 - It's Called Football, Not Soccer!

It didn't look like the Croatia play flicked or touched it at all. So if not then that goal should have stood?

I wanted a Portugal win but feel for Croatia.

The ball has a sensor which showed there was the slightest touch but it's stupid cause the ball clearly didn't change direction. It should go by that.

I think they are going a little overboard with the technology, he didn't make any meaningful contact it should still be a judgment call on the part of the ref. I mean the ref is still judging that the defenders contact wasn't 'deliberate'.
I mean I don't want to go back to Lampard phantom goal level but it needs to be tempered.
We saw the opposite with I think the Netherlands where they had a goal ruled in by the most ephemeral of touches.

Im sorry Croatians i love ya'll but Portugal caralho lets goo, they better play like their life depends on it against Spain, it's a matter of honor

Wouldn't it have been offside anyway even if the Croatian player didn't touch the ball? Since deflections from opponents don't alter the offside rule.
I think by rule only intentional play of the ball would cancel the offside, this is why deflections still count as offside. So that would be correct, defender was trying to clear.

If it was a touch, then why the need to go to VAR and check? If the ball sensed a touch, then the referee did not need to go to VAR at all.
Think he was looking at whether the defenders touch was deliberate. The ball touched the Croatia dude as it was shown on the sensor.

These milimeter precise sensors are everything that's wrong with the game currently imo.
That Ronaldo goal souldn't have been offside, that Croatia equalizer should've been valid.
This game should've went on into extra time honestly.

If you need var to check an offside then it's not an offside, an offside should be clear to the eyes imo.

Ronaldo was way offside. You don't need a sensor for that. The linesman called it straight away.

Even Ronaldo knew, nice goal if it stood though.

I'd be lying if I said I don't miss the old system a bit. VAR is obviously more accurate but part of the appeal was that you would argue with your friends.

This thread would be hundreds of pages without VAR. And multiple people with temp bans.

Hot Take:

is Harry Kane on the same level as Prime Messi?
Apples and oranges, but lol, hell nah

Even compared to other centre-forwards, there are so many that I would consider to be much better than him: Pele (obviously), Ronaldo Nazario, Suarez, Lewandowski and so much more.

He is great, but far from one of the greats. Like, a mile far.

Kane is #27 on the list

A millimeter here turns into a centimeter there, which would change the trajectory of the ball as it deflected off of the defender to the Croatia player.

It was harsh, and we're not used to it, and I would also be upset if I was a Croatia supporter... but eventually it will be accepted like the slightest mm offside detected by technology because "offside is offside"

Sad Its Okay GIF

Well Australia to play this morning.....I have low expectations but its Egypt so its not exactly un-winnable. Im sure they will find a way to disappont me tho.

Spain is gonna demolish Portugal because the bald fraud (Martinez) cant use the players he has properly

I dont think so, because they have similar strengths and weaknesses. The lack of a top striker is a problem for both teams.

This is not hot, but burning.

Kane is amazing, but he's not even in the top-5 strikers of his generation, let alone in the all-time greats and counting every position. Only in Brasil there have been like 50 better players and that being generous. He's on Benzema's tier, which is a generational talent but far from any goat discussion.

Michael Olise is the one that's looking like the next big thing. What an incredible player.

The mm ahead of the player is the standard rule applied with exacting standards. The ball hitting some guys hair on its trajectory counting as a new pass I don't think is in the spirit of the rule in the same way. I'm sure with the technology they could establish an objective threshold for 'meaningful contact" if we wanted to keep it consistent.

I love Oyarzabal and I believe he's underrated but at the same time, he's not a world class striker. Lots of Spaniards before him puts him in their pockets. Spain as a whole are not like what they used to be anyways
He's not a big deal at club level, but he seems to be turning into what Miroslav Klose used to be for Germany. Finding a different gear in international matches (or just consistently lucky).
