Steam Machine |OT| There Are Dozens of Us. Dozens!

I'm still pondering this but so far it just seems like a bad purchase. For anyone who already has a decent PC or a PS5 etc. anyway. And for anyone who has played the best games of the past few years...

Because it won't be able to run new games properly, right? It seems to barely be able to run Cyberpunk, which is a 2020 game.

It seems like the main selling point is the small form factor? But it isn't even that small. It's not small like an Apple TV or anything. It looks so bulky.

It actually looks too big to fit into most TV cabinet shelves, so it would have to sit on top instead? But if sits on top them it is probably going to obscure part of the TV screen.

It's a 1080p/1440p low settings small PC. I'd say if you are wanting to play the latest and greatest AAA games then this isn't the way to go. Of courase there are really not a lot of great options if you want something that is this size. It's quite the trade off.

I generally agree with you but, it doesn't sound like the Steam Machine will actually be able to run new games well?

For example it doesn't run seem to run 007 well. In this video (at 12min-ish mark) they have to turn all the graphics settings down to low etc. in order to get 007 to run well on a Steam Machine

Yeah that's a possibility and it's ok with me. I am usually pretty far behind the curve.

I'm pretty sure you can use your Steam Deck as a Steam Link host, and then just install a Steam Link client app on your TV/Apple TV/etc.

e.g.

Seems easy?

Well, sadly, I don't have a steam deck anymore.I got rid of it to get ready for the Steam machine

Well, I ordered a Steam Machine from eBay. I couldn't handle the "wait list" and the hunting is exhausting :messenger_sad_relieved:

I picked up a 512GB w/Controller for the price of a 2TB w/Controller. I mean...not bad considering the circumstances. That was my budget to pick one up.

I did as much due diligence as I could. He has a 100% rating with over 1,000 ratings and sales. Seems to someone that jumps on trends to sell the hottest items, but was also reasonable with his pricing. He had a bunch of shoes, LEGO sets, and baseball card packs. He did sell a number of big ticket items, as well.

His listing was for a confirmed order where he has the ability to place the order with Valve within 3 days or he loses his spot. I created a paper trail in DMs to confirm everything I needed to know and I used PayPal. At least eBay favors the buyer way more than the seller.

So far, he's been excellent with his communications back and forth.

This is only my second time ever doing something like this. Last time end up okay. I figure that prices will only go up from here directly from Valve and from 3rd party sellers. Tried to get in when prices are relatively within my range.

I have a 2TB drive in my Steam Deck OLED that I can swap with this one pretty easily.

Best case I end up with a Steam Machine. Worst case, I have a life lesson.

Wish me luck guys. I'm nervous and scared AF.

You have directly contributed to the very business model that was likely responsible for you being unable to initially secure a Steam Machine.

I hope the irony isn't lost on you.

I also hope that you enjoy your Steam Machine and that your transaction is free of shennanigans.

Oh trust me, I know. I'm not thrilled about this at all. I mean, not even reservation queue people know when they're getting their machine...and I was on the wait list for a 512GB without a controller. I'm also on the reservation list for the controller for 2027. It's bonkers. Retail prices may go up even more by the time I can place an order for the SM. Nothing in the market is pointing at things getting better any time soon.

The shenanigans are up in the air. Let's hope it's legit. He's making like $100 something bucks on this 🤷‍♂️

I hope it works out and I can just play games on this without having to worry about when or where. And I'm still in my max budget, at least.

Ran Black Myth Wukong benchmark

1440p FSR 3(?) Balanced. Frame gen on. 50 fps. Frame gen off. 32 fps

Think that's about done it for me. My makeshift Steam Machine hasn't really been what I expected based on Valve's promises. Hopefully the actual Steam Machine will have better results.

I'm returning the 7700. 8GB just doesn't cut it anymore

I, too, would have done questionable things had I not landed in the reservation queue, and even then, the wait almost got the better of me. Valve really needs to start taking pre-orders for their hardware. The scarcity is annoying.

Can't say I'm proud of it! We're in a really messed up hardware era. It really sucks.

I'm still keeping my 512GB waitlist option open and will offer it up at cost here on GAF first. Paying forward the generosity I've been offered here.

That is, as long as everything goes smoothly and my waitlist unit comes in before 2030 lol

Too many unknown factors and I want one sooner than later:
  • Too much ambiguity with these "reservation and waitlis" queues:
    • Reservation Queue means that you'll get one at some point this year?
    • Waitlist Queue means...2027 and beyond?
  • Only Steam sells these things. No other options to look at: Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc.
  • Prices will just continue to go up on eBay. I snagged it at under $1500. I'm already seeing "confirmed orders" going up to $1700-1900. I've been watching Steam Controller prices on eBay and they were $150 not too long ago. Once they announced that some may not get it until 2027, prices jumped up to $250-300+.
  • Whose to say that the MSRP won't go up on Steam in the next 3-6 months? Will my waitlist order increase in price? And by how much?
I made this decision as calculated as I could and looked through as many sellers as possible all day yesterday. I narrowed down the criteria as much as I could and increased as many safeguards as I could to make the purchase as low risk as possible.

I've gotten every console and GPU at launch by preordering at hour zero. I even ordered PS5s for all of my friends back in 2020 with all of those crazy setups we had to deal with.

I was okay with paying a $300 premium to get a Steam Machine with a Controller (which is also impossible to get). It's just not normal times right now :messenger_anguished:

It actually ended up being $280 with tax. See DarkShadowXI DarkShadowXI you basically would have been losing money NOT getting that Steam Machine from ebay
lol, man I even ran it past my wife and she's like "why don't you just order it now before the floor raises even higher?"

So you and I ended up paying for the same premium in one way or another. Probably the cheapest we'll find these things in the foreseeable future, too.

We don't have a lot of options outside of some of the very generous folks we have here on the forum (much love to you guys), but like...what else are we gonna do except wait 6+ months?

Following the Arrested Development theme, I live out of Valve's coverage map and so I'll be reading your messages like this:

In light of Sony's announcement about games today, I might just go ahead and make PC my main platform, so I'm looking forward to this overpowered and underpriced box even more now. I buy all digital from Sony anyway, but if they don't have any exclusives I'm into anymore, what's really the point? We'll see how it all plays out but I'm curious to try this now.

Based off of what I saw on eBay just now that isn't terrible if you got it for 2TB pricing. The only 512s I saw on eBay were all $1700 or above.

Even though it was sorta risky and not ideal, my gut was telling me that was the cheapest it was going to be. Crazy how much difference a day makes. I've been seeing the same with the Steam Controllers on there :messenger_anguished:

Dozens of us! 🔥

I hope it meets your needs, brother. It's kinda wild what people get to run on the Steam Deck over so many years with scaling and tweaking. I have a feeling we'll see the same with Steam Machine, as long as we keep our expectations in check :)

I'm really looking forward to the ease of use. It's gonna be a breath of fresh air in this space.

Hmmm not great, also with my HTPC with SteamOS on it, there are a few quirks and issues such as spotty game support. Even if a game is supported you might get visual artifacts such as FH6 no RT support, needs a long launch command to work normally and even then still stutters like a bitch.

Long way to go for these devices.

I thought 1080 with FSR4 upscaling was what everyone expected. That's fine with me as long as you get decent frame rates on most things. I know this is not a killer box. Well, mine is supposedly going to be delivered tomorrow so I will get a chance to check it out over the weekend. Hopefully.

1080p gaming is exactly what I'm expecting and am totally cool with that :)

Just opened it up. packaging is very nice, and it feels like a nicely made piece of gear. I won't fire it up until later, but I did get one of the Steam Controllers a few weeks back so I will be able to test the whole thing.

That Steam Controller is so good, man.

The sleep/wake functionality with the Steam Machine is going to be:

Pictures of ...? :messenger_grinning_sweat:

It's a black little cube .. but! It is hooked up to a 98" tv. :pie_thinking:

So I played a few games, but nothing super demanding. I did however try some games that I had recently played on the PS5 Pro, like the Riven remake and Stray. I am currently downloading FF7 Rebirth and that takes a bit so I will try that later tonight.

I can say FSR 2 is total crap. They had that running on the Riven remake and it was just a noisy mess. No idea why anyone would ever release that. I thought this thing was supposed to get FSR 4? Or maybe its a per title thing. Im thinking of getting RDR2 to see how that runs, its pretty cheap on Steam right now.

Initial impressions are that it's "fine" but it's unfortunate what the current climate has done to pricing. I feel like if prices were normal and they wanted to release something like this, they could have had a version with a slightly larger form factor, and better specs.

Also, I could be wrong but I swear PC games have a "feel." One of the games I tried was Chrono Trigger (yeah I know, doesn't test squat) and it just didn't feel like playing a console game. It feels like playing a console game ported to PC. I don't know what it is, and it also doesn't make sense. Maybe I am just biased as hell.

FSR 4.1 is out I think, but since this is a PC and it's all coming in hot, I think you'll have to look up how to actually use it in games. Proton Experimental, and Optiscaler, I believe.

My "place of purchase" notified me that their order has been shipped and will be receiving it early next week and will ship it to me immediately.

Shenanigans at acceptable levels, so far.
