Steam Machine |OT| There Are Dozens of Us. Dozens!

I was going to get one but decided to try building my own steam machine since steam os can be downloaded now

The issue with prebuilds not from valve is that valve cares about SteamOS to work on their hardware the most. Sure it will probably work but prepare for pain. That's why it makes sense to buy SM if you want SteamOS. It's kind of like steamos on other handhelds than valve. Sure it works but buttons are wrong, shit breaks from time to time and so on.

Congrats to anyone who gets one. It's enticing. I love how small the device is. Will wait to see what the Helix ends up being before deciding what to get.

I'll be using steam controller so that will probably work better than what happens with handhelds

Congratulations to everyone that managed to get one. If this is your entry to PC then enjoy it and later down the road when the current fuckery gets fixed, you'll build a proper PC. Have fun lads

After seeing the specs of the Steam Machine I directly went on, sold my series x and ordered a PC. I hope my configuration will stand the test of time in this fast evolving market. We'll see.

Unrelated im not surprised the Steam Frame release also include Red Carpet FEX STACK. Possible arm64 device (android) new app standalone

I tried to get one but had bad luck in the lottery and got put on the waiting list. The demand must be higher than supply. That said, I have no idea what supply looks like.

I might end up just buying my 512gb offer. Seems like the demand is high enough that if I don't want to keep it I could just put it on Ebay and recoup the cost.

Supply must have been decent if a handful of folks on here are getting one. I honestly thought nobody was going to get one here.

Dude please don't sell it on eBay. If you decide not to keep it, I'll gladly buy it off you and figure out a way to compensate for your troubles.

I'm like scrambling over here to figure out another solution to buying something else lol. But I really want this thing for my setup.

You would be cool with the 512 setup?

For sure! That's actually what I'm on the waitlist for. I signed up for all four, but I'd be happy with any Steam Machine configuration at this point 🙂

I initially wanted the two terabyte because 512 is kind of s***** today to try to have games on but the more I think about it the more I'm fine dealing with 512 for now and I can upgrade the storage at any time at my convenience. 512 is enough to get by with and it's a pretty big difference in price in the end. That said I'm glad I ended up with the 512 model and not the 2 TB in the end. I'm also thankful that it's a controller bundle because based on that other thread it would be next year before getting a controller unless you want to pay premium on eBay or something. Not that I'm especially enticed by the steam controller but I'll give it a shot.

Dude I'm so glad you're getting a controller with yours! It'll work perfectly with it.

Yeah you'll be good with 512 for now and it's easy to upgrade later, if you wanted 🙂

for me I didn't want the hassle of trying to get another micro SD or another SSD drive I just wanted to Plug and Play
so either people felt the same way as me or the most plausible explanation that had a bunch of more 512 than 2 TB

Well that was my initial thought is just go ahead and get the two terabyte so that I wouldn't have to worry about it for a significant amount of time and pretty much set it and forget it. But in the end I didn't get the choice and the price difference does make the pill easier to swallow.

For me, it'll be connected to my 48" OLED bedroom TV, so I can play my Steam library for 30-60 minutes a night or if I wanna game in bed when I'm not feeling well or on a lazy weekend morning. I'll play it every day, so the value is there.

It's gotta look nice, fit in my TV stand (8" clearance) run quiet, and not heat up the room.

And I'd like to keep the controller on my nightstand so that I can boot it up from the controller when I hop in bed or wake up in the morning. The HDMI CEC and Steam Controller wake functionality is 🔥

I have a 4090, PS5 Pro and Switch 2 in my gaming area. Most of my gaming library is on Steam and I'll take every chance I can get to game more.
I think this just further demonstrates how niche this device is... I am waiting for someone on here to suggest they are buying one for each room in their house lol...

Waiting for my offer email today.

This is a low power / low noise little set top box for the older games and emulation machine for us. Is it good value? Absolutely not. Is it going to replace my gaming PC? Nope. Still looking forward to it!

Not getting Steam Machine, but decided to do some experimenting with a similar setup. Going to pair my mini PC with a AMD 7600 GPU running Steam OS. Mini PC has AMD Ryzen 7 8745HS, 16 GB DDR5, 512GB SSD. Adding the 7600 via oculink connection. 7600 is slightly more powerful than the Steam Machine GPU, but oculink is PCIE x4 vs Steam Machine's PCIE x8 so that may even it out a bit.

7600 arrives tomorrow. I'll report back.

I've been super impressed with the Steam Controller - I've only had it about a week now and Valve has pushed out like 3 firmware updates for the thing. It's kind of the same with the Steam Deck, they're always iterating and improving the device / software at a fast pace.

Tempted for the Steam Machine, despite it's price, just because Valve's hardware support seems to be top-notch. With my desktop it can be a matter of updating the mothboard/BIOS, updating the graphics card drivers, updating the bluetooth dongle firmware, etc etc. With the Steam Machine it's like a single push that gets all that and optimizes the configuration for gaming.

Like the Deck, it'll also pre-cache shaders designed specifically for the Machine.

The price point might be high but the convenience factor is also pretty high. I'm kinda hoping a bunch of people cancel or don't go through with their purchases so I can get one.

I've never built an AMD machine, but I've been researching it a bit since I'm on the waitlist. Super interested to see what you come back with!

Yeah man, same here. I'm super chill about it, though. No big deal.

Yep, DBrand made the whole companion cube thing without even asking Valve, lol

I've had USB3 external 2.5" SATA drives running games for years. Anything before this gen and even a lot of current gen stuff I had zero problems with. There are a lot of cheap ways to expand storage. I even have a fleet of old mechanical HDDs I chucked into external enclosures.

Damn, that's crazy! How did they not get a license??

Talk about a major blunder. At least they're being transparent about it, but that's a major oof.
Venture capital bros for you. "Let's try to not pay for a thing and just collect money from it"

Please do! Definitely interested to hear your thoughts on running a native SteamOS desktop.

I like the banana for scale photo, as if bananas have a fixed standard size. Are we talking the average banana here, or my banana?

If nobody here gets one relatively soon, then I'll assume that I'm on a waitlist until the end of time and will be very tempted to build my own Steam Machine.

Counterpoint: maybe they're staggering the "complete your purchase now" emails over several hours / days(?) so that not everyone hits their checkout system at once and everyone has a smooth experience. Especially since they (for some reason) decided to start selling these during their literally busiest time of year.

Home sick from work with food poisoning today and playing Mewgenics in my living room with a 25ft HDMI cable and 30ft USB cord...and praying my order email comes in soon. These damn cords are a tripping hazard right now.

once again congratulations to everyone on getting the complete your purchase emails
now me and the rest of the weightless Bros is waiting and hoping
that's some decide that I have too expensive and dump the email
or that valve quickly makes more steam machines
