one of my fondest memories of RDR2 was the memorable faces not only in their design but also their realistic portrayal that was only possible using those beautiful skin shaders
I'd argue that the new screenshots show HEAVILY downgraded skin shaders that are not even on par with RDR2
everyone now, inlcudiing both the protagonists, look like plastic dolls in comparison with RDR2. as if the "NPC skin shaders" have been applied to them

which is a terrible shame if true, because one of the things that made my jaw drop the last time they showed screenshots was how staggeringly realistic looking the NPCs were
they looked like actual real people you see out there. faces that have stories and tell you a great deal about the person's background subliminally
I don't know if this would be possible anymore if the one factor that contributed that much were now absent

The only character in rdr2 with good facial details is arthur, ALL the other faces look like shit...i posted a pic of dutch recently and he look like a mid ps3 face...

It is bizarre that some ncps in gta6 look much better than the protagonist tho, i agree, but old characters with wrinkles are always gonna look more detailed than young faces with good skin, this is an universal law of videogame faces.

Faces were probably one of the weakest aspects of rdr2.

Agree to disagree, i have like 3 or 4 runs with the game and i was never impressed with their faces once compared to the best faces of the ps4 era.

Maybe saying that they look like shit was a bit too hard.

I haven't lost faith in Rockstar. I think the trailer will reassure everyone, but their marketing/social media team deserves a good spanking for posting those screenshots
especially after setting the bar so high with the second batch of images and after telling everyone it was "running in-game" not in-engine, "on base PS5"

The promotional art of the new Hitmans series built the game up so much and to good effect that crappy in-game visuals simply couldn't live up to it, and I don't mean technically, but artistically

Yes, but it doesn't cancel out how an informed audience should objectively and technically perceive them
they are both giving us false expectations
it is just a fun juxtaposition

(and they are not truly equal really, the third set of images have too many different variables that are practically uncomparable: the setting, time of day, the lighting, the reflections, the haze, etc.]
Everything has been tweaked to make the GTAVI shot look like promotional material while the Forza one is just a random dude taking a random photo of a random street with just the same car happening to be there )

GTA VI is absolutely gorgeous and will probably be the most beautiful game ever released. Do I even need to remind you how sexy RDR II looks on a base PS4? It's almost sorcery.

Skeptics will eat crows, this is neither Ubisoft, EA, Sony or Microsoft.
 
I've been playing Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro (on "RT Pro" mode, it's the 40FPS mode) and my God! It looks absolutely phenomenal, some of the best looking graphics I've seen in any game. The RT effects brought it to the next level. I really want Rockstar to add more RT effects for GTA 6 on the Pro...

Y'know I have a high-end PC and whatnot, I told you guys about that, but it's been with one of my relatives' house for quite a while and I played it with Path Tracing over there. I said this because the Pro version still looks phenomenal even after the PT mode on PC.

This is quite likely. Whoever was in charge of the new promo material should just be fired. Complete lack of understanding of how a scene should be lit. So many shots completely ruined by flooding the faces with front facing lights, while the actual natural lighting of the scene is behind.

Like... what even is this shit? Amateur hour photography is what it is. Opposite facing lights clashing against each other, wiping out most GI as a result

This scene is supposed to be bathed in purple. The fuck are these white spotlights on both sides of Jason clearly staged just for the shot? Even if those spotlights are part of the scene, why is Jason's back lit this way to make him float?

They couldn't even leave the cars alone without artificial lights. The car should be bathed in yellow from the sunlight behind. Instead they put white fake lights on it. It's actually frustrating to even look at them. Let alone bother with a technical analysis.

Technically, they are all sound. There is no lighting "downgrade" that I can spot so I won't dive deeper. My issues are purely artistic. And I'm sure the actual game has none of this artificial lighting nonsense. It's photo mode done badly and that's purely my subjective opinion. So I can see why you may feel differently. I just HATE this type of composition.

The thing with light systems is that even movie directors think that realism is not always the best way to lit a scene, so yeah you can simulate light acting like reality (or a close approximation) with path-tracing and ray tracing and nascar racing but sometimes unrealistic lights just look better.

Maybe the dude that edited the pics thought that this looked better and more flashy than a more natural look.

Nah...that looks like depth of field issues blurring her skin. Maybe im wrong but i dont think i am.
It's character makeup + artificial lights on their face blurring out the details due to SSS working overtime. Here's what Faye's face looks like when she is hit with high intensity lights.

None of these are downgrades or technical issues in GTA 6. If anything, there is "megalights" now that didn't exist/wasn't as obvious before. It's why I'm continuously discouraging people from analyzing the tech behind these shots, especially anything with face/body closeups.
