I mean, it looks very nice as a product overall. It's insane the level of anger it gets just for (1) not giving into the arms race that insists everything has to be next-gen, and (2) not subsidizing the hardware... despite the fact that everything is so much dramatically cheaper over time than it is on consoles, and you'll own 10x the great games in a few years for the same amount of spend.

If it launched under a grand for the 2tb controller combo I would've sold my PC for it. For a lot of reasons I'd have been okay with it and yes, understand the concept of small form factor but no.

Who the hell is this is even for? It's not for console players cause they already have a console and don't need this. It's not for PC guys cause why would a PC guy pay over a grand for an underpowered box that you can't customize parts wise. It's not for casuals cause it's too expensive. It's not for ANYONE!

If they announce Helix later this year with a tentative release window for '27 or early '28, it's an easy wait for that for me.

I fully agree on this one. They really should do that as their biggest issues are SSD and RAM pricing. They could sell a number of barebones boxes.

i know this is the big thing to be upset about, but its not really there fault....literally everything costs more now. Iphone is about to raise their prices due to ram, they tried to make it $780..

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Agreed, I also have a spare NVMe and some laptop RAM and would have loved to put this together myself as a bit of a project. Valve said that the 16GB of RAM itself cost them about $250 and that it raised the final price by around $300. Throw in another $50 for the 512GB SSD (conservatively, given the potential price scale Valve might have got here) and they could have launched the bare-bones Steam Machine for $699.
Granted, we could still build a much better PC than the Steam Machine for $700 if we just needed a mobo / CPU / GPU / case / power supply. But the integrated hardware firmware updates, software updates, and built-in controller connectivity help tip the scales a bit.

It's honestly not the price for me - I like everything about it but it's just not powerful enough. If it was 1500-2000 and actually more powerful than a PS5 pro I would've bought it

I've had a pretty amazing experience with the Steam Deck so far. I bought it to tackle my steam library, mainly because i don't always want to sit at a desk to play games, and I travel every now and again. It fits into my habits really well and i use it to play smaller and older games.
So when I look at the Steam Machine, I kind of get it, even if the value proposition is shit. Sometimes I just want to couch game and play something from my steam library, which is why I bought the dock for the deck, so this is kind of an extension of a setup I already use.
Staying in the same ecosystem, having my cloud saves carry over between this, the deck and PC, and being able to pick away at my library without thinking too much about it is quite appealing.
So yeah, the specs don't bother me. I'm not looking at it as something that replaces my PS5 Pro, PC or deck, but rather something that would compliment it all. It's expensive and hard to justify, but I kind of want it. Not sure if I will get it though.
