These are probably going to be in very limited quantities during RAMageddon.

For those that simply want a Steam Machine and you don't care how you get it, I'd recommend reserving all four models to increase your chances. The lottery is pretty wonky if you read the rules below.

It's very very easy to upgrade the storage and you might be better off hunting down a Steam Controller separately.

If the option you chose doesn't get randomly selected, then you'll get put at the end of the line of the waitlist for the other options if you choose them later.

Steam Machine FAQ

Why a randomized reservation order?

Valve underestimated demand after the new Steam Controller's release and wanted a fairer system than a fixed launch time, which tends to reward bots, fast connections, and quick reflexes. Spreading signups over several days also lets them validate accounts and enforce one signup per household.

Sign-up criteria
  • Steam account in good standing
  • A Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026
  • One signup per household (enforced via payment method, shipping address, etc.)

What if I don't sign up before June 25 at 10am Pacific?
After that one-time randomization, anyone signing up afterward goes straight to the back of the waitlist.

Do I have to pick a specific model?
You can sign up for multiple models. Each model has its own randomized list (June 25, 10am). If you land a queue spot for more than one, you're automatically allocated the highest-end model and removed from the others. If you don't land a spot for any, you're placed on the waitlist for whichever model you were closest to qualifying for.

Are sign-up lists separated by region?
Yes — separate lists for North America, UK/EU, and Australia, based on your region.

What does a "reservation queue" email mean?
You have a Steam Machine reserved. Once it's ready, you'll get a purchase email and 72 hours to complete the purchase before the reservation is canceled and passed to the next person.

When will order emails go out?
Starting the week of June 29, in randomized order, continuing through the rest of the year.

What does a "waitlist" email mean?
Your randomized position landed beyond this production run's supply. You may move up if others cancel; otherwise your position carries over to future production runs.

Can I change my reserved model?
No — once randomized and notified, your model is locked. Canceling releases your spot entirely.

What about Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, or Hong Kong?
  • Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong: order through Komodo, the official regional distributor
  • South Korea: Steam Machine will not ship there

Is this "the Valve console"?
Valve frames it as an extension of PC gaming, not a console — no hardware-loss/subscription lock-in model. The bet is that open ecosystems (PC gaming's traditional strength) win out over time, and Steam Machine is one solution within that open ecosystem, not the only one.

What if I don't get one right away?
Thanks to PC openness, other native or streaming options exist for living-room gaming. Valve is also expanding SteamOS to non-Valve hardware — SteamOS 3.8 already lets you run it on your own PC, though currently only with AMD GPUs (broader support planned).

Best of luck with the lottery tomorrow!

I put some tips in the second post to help your chances if you legit want one. I'm not 100% sure how things are going to go, but I hope it helps.

I'll update the OT with "How-to" videos, updates, FSR upgrades, etc. over the coming weeks & months.

Thanks! I never knew the part where if you sign up for everything and get a spot it will only give you the highest option so I took myself off of the 2TB list. I have my own storage and I don't want to lose the chance for a 512.

Quoting it as well since I bet a lot of people don't know it and I want it to be as visible as possible.

For sure! It took me a minute to understand how it works. It's gonna trip a lot of people up.

I originally signed up for the 2TB w/controller, but I realized that this thing will probably be impossible to get, so I figured I'd choose all four to increase the odds and get whatever.

Each selection you make gets its own random spot. You could even choose all four and still get kicked to the waiting list 😬

If I get a 2TB w/controller, then I'm set. If I don't, then I'll upgrade the storage myself and/or hunt for another controller later.

Eager to hear people's impressions once they get their hands on this.

I'll join you in spirit once the SteamOS recovery image is advanced enough to run comparably to Windows on Nvidia hardware.

Joined the reservation list for the two 512gb versions. Not sure if I'll buy one if I get picked though. The price is really killing it for me.

Here's hoping I get the email tomorrow! I can only imagine how this OT will go with all the people that will just want to shit all over it
Honest question, what has you excited for buying this?

I am generally interested to know why and what people plan to do with this device. It's weaker than a console and more expensive plus you could just get a PC and use the steam OS with that.

I'm very curious to see what happens with this device in sales and the benchmark testings.

For me, it'll be connected to my 48" OLED bedroom TV, so I can play my Steam library for 30-60 minutes a night or if I wanna game in bed when I'm not feeling well or on a lazy weekend morning. I'll play it every day, so the value is there.

It's gotta look nice, fit in my TV stand (8" clearance) run quiet, and not heat up the room.

And I'd like to keep the controller on my nightstand so that I can boot it up from the controller when I hop in bed or wake up in the morning. The HDMI CEC and Steam Controller wake functionality is 🔥

I have a 4090, PS5 Pro and Switch 2 in my gaming area. Most of my gaming library is on Steam and I'll take every chance I can get to game more.

Nice effort OP.

That's what I would have bought that for but to play turn-based dungeon crawlers it's just too expensive. Hopefully I can join in a few years.

signed up for all. Really just need it as a third gaming pc at home for a smaller room. Will be perfect for a 1080p bedroom setup

I think Pierre announced earlier today that FSR4 is now available on discrete RDNA3 GPUs.

I have a Legion Go S, and a FSR4 compatible game, so I can test and let you know.

Yes, please do so. You just update through desktop mode or is there an easier way to do it in bit picture on something like an Xbox Ally?

Both me and my husband signed up for both 512GB versions. Hoping between the two of us, at least one of them will come through. Good luck everyone!

Hopefully people that pick it up end up liking it. I really wish Valve could figure out a way on Linux to get that suspend state for games working on normal PC hardware, or through connected accessory.

It's the one convenience I like with the device, along with supporting HDMI CEC to boot up the tv with the machine.

I've seen people speculate the original price could've been around $750-800 scaling the percentage with ramflation and the Steam Deck increase. That cost would've done better in the market, since it's still a full computer, just gamecube-sized.

Maybe I can find one used at local stores in a few years for cheap. Trade in the old Series X/PS5 pay the difference.
Gamestop used to sell used Steam Decks.

Hoping people will make vids of their unboxing and hooking it up next to their other consoles. Please make a tower of power.
Series X on it's side on the bottom, Steam Machine in the middle and the PS5 on top.

I'll not shit on it in the OT and I truly hope everyone who gets one enjoys their purchase. Looking foreward to seeing some impressions from the GAF elite.

So once this Lottery happens on the 25th I mean does that mean if you win the lottery you can purchase it that day and they start shipping? If not when? I'm guessing sometime soon since reviewers already have theirs in hand.

I believe Valve said they begin shipping June 30th

I keep telling myself I'm about to blow tens of thousands on a family trip this holiday season, what's $1k more for the GabeCube? But... I just wish this device had more than 8gb of VRAM. Doing sub 20fps on perf mode for Hogwarts Legacy is rough. But I absolutely love the OS and my Steam Deck. Maybe in the future with custom hardware.

It's such an interesting device that I don't need, but I love that people are excited about it and that it will hopefully help push SteamOS into further adoption.

Why are you making a OT for them. You should be giving valve this instead. 🖕
Hey…I had to learn how to make animated GIFs and change the Steam Machine LED glow to GAF orange. I spent half the afternoon making this OT lol

The vibe here is to support those that are legit interested. Go flip the bird in the other 20 topics. Let us blow our money in peace!

I like new tech and I love my Steam Deck.

I've said it a couple times in the other threads. I have a gaming pc but I've been wanting to get away from Windows and I prefer the simplicity of consoles anyway.

Even with SteamOS or Bazzite on my current PC I'm not gonna get stuff like HDMI CEC, good suspend (only tried Bazzite but it did not work well), wake with controller.

Plus I've got the disposable income. Worst case scenario is I return it. Valve has a 14 day return policy.

I want one, I am just poor LOL. or slave to the mortgage really.
I think this is where I've landed after a bit of reflection. I've wanted one for months, and I'm disappointed that I'm kinda priced out of buying one.

I couldn't end up getting it to run as expected. I'm guessing they haven't fully extended proton support yet to all RDNA3 handhelds yet.
This will be one thing that I'm following especially with the newer handhelds with the Z2 extreme. If they are back porting and isn't the Rog Xbox slightly newer as well? These are kind of important things for AMD to really bolster as Nvidia is really good at stuff like that and supporting their legacy hardware. There's nothing worse than modern hardware, even if on a handheld, gets left behind because of whatever lazy reason or lack of foresight.
