GTA VI physical edition won't include discs

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25, including the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition, which amplifies the deepest and most immersive GTA experience yet with an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story.

Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. All Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders and purchases before November 20 will get the Vintage Vice City Pack, a collection of items that flash back to when the neon burned brightest.

Players who pre-order digital versions of Grand Theft Auto VI will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12 to ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19. The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12 to support pre-loading.

I can understand that the game is 100% digital; the only advantage, therefore, is if some distributor lowers the price of the code.

Do you remember when millions of users were saying that the standard version of GTAVI was going to cost $100?

In the end, it turns out it costs the same as any other game.

How many people have made money from the constant misinformation and clickbait on social media?

How does a physical edition still be called a physical edition when all it has is a piece of paper telling you to go online and download the game?

Well.. I guess if Nintendo can be allowed to get away with it, then why not everyone else?

Plenty, but that's not new.

But the Nintendo game key cards can still be resold, right? This is a throw away code that leaves you with an empty box.

That's true, I guess. This is the death of physical as we know it. If GTA does this, then everyone will start doing this by the time next gen comes around. The least they could have done was put the download license on a disc. This is crazy... I don't buy physical anymore... but if I still did, this would piss me off. Wild.

Don't be disingenuous here…T2/R* is preventing you from reselling your copy of GTA 6 by making it a digital only title.

Nintendo gives you the ability to resell your game key card titles…and they even give you a physical cartridge you can put in your system. T2/R* provides you with a slip of paper you can use to…clean yourself with after redemption.

Nintendo is a merciful king indeed!

I sure hope no disc is a temporary measure to avoid leaks. They can go fuck themselves if there's no disc version at all.

An extra disc costs about a $1 for them to source/press, I'd be perfectly fine with them up charging the physical by $5-10 if there's 2-3 discs, rather than no physical at all.

Having a redemption key rather than a disc might be a move to keep you in GTA Online 2 when the next-gen consoles without disc drives launch.

Wtf. I'm starting to think this is an online only game with some streaming from the cloud rendering. 😄

Still getting in my order but having no disc sucks.

As someone who is all digital this is personally fine for me, but a bitter pill for those that have collected all the games in the series on disc. Hopefully for those people they will release a disc based version in future.

On a positive for digital first people, having boxes with codes in could actually be a way to have some price competition in the digital space on PS5 (but I bet Rockstar will probably be strict on enforcing price at launch)

The physical version will probably still have some goodies like a physical map that also serves as a wallpaper as is tradition with Rockstar. But not having a physical disk is genuinely terrible news and I'm so disappointed...

Welp… this will embolden other big publishers to do the same with their physical versions.

Also, wild how RDR2 was a double‑disc physical release on both PS4 and Xbox One, and now this one is just a code in a box…
