I'm all for options but that's defeating its purpose. Do people think you can source memory better than Valve right now? The only people that would appeal to are those who have some spare SODIMM laying around. If anything it would probably increase cost for Valve serving an even smaller niche with another product option.

A reasonable price.

As I've always said, and Valve just confirmed themselves, this is a PC, not a console.
They aren't trying to compete with consoles - it is a VERY different thing.
People need to get that silly idea out of their thick heads.
They aren't selling at a loss.
You own and can it modify as you wish (kinda curious what people will do with the form factor here :LOL: ).
You have access to way cheaper games - still a win vs consoles long-term (same as it's always been).
It's a PC - with a console-ish form factor.

And, yeah, that's about how much it would set you back to build something of comparable power yourself. Given current prices, anyway.
Unless you get very good deals, Steam Machine is actually a bit cheaper.

No corporation really cares about you as a customer, they're here to get as much of your money as they can; the facade of being "pro-consumer" is just a means to that end.

You ignored my point. Giving the hardware away just means scalpers sell the pc parts at a profit. Nothing to do with evil gaben. Did you even read anything i write?

As you said "it's the reality of the market"; these companies exist to make money, none of them "care" about customers and Valve is no different.
 
I mean yeah. Storage/memory prices are insane these days. With normal prices it would cost like 600-700$ without controller which would be much more affordable. Just for comparison 32GB DDR5 6000mhz kit costs around $430 where i live. Like just giving it modern 32GB ram is like HALF of this thing price. Let alone something like 16GB VRAM which is every more expensive.

Sony rised prices to 649 and 599 recently and Sony had years long contracts with suppliers at super reduced prices. Once those contracts will run out it will easily go toward 1000$ it is a question of only when.
 
Daily reminder that just few years ago CPU and GPU were main costs what you needed to watch out for. Now RAM and VRAM on gpu is worth more than CPU and GPU chip itself XD

Valve isn't paying the same price as you and me when buying parts. They make deals and buy in bulk. They get huge discounts.

No you wouldn't. You'd buy a better PC for $1250 today. Better CPU, better GPU, dual channel RAM and 2tb NVME. And if you're willing to source AM4 parts you can get much the same for even cheaper.

Yeah. They can't afford to have good prices because the business is so feeble, and they don't make a 30% cut of every game sold on PC, just on 95% of the sales on PC. And that is unacceptable…

All of this is happening because of the purchase of the yacht.

Maintenance, both in port and at sea, is very expensive.

For consoles, they can sell at aloss because their hardware are not compatable for anything else. PS3 was hundreds of dollars more valuable than sale price, but no one could rip it apart and sell the parts for profit because it was only working in a ps3.

If Valve give you steam machines for below cost, you would never get to own one because scalpers would buy all the stock and just resell the RAM and memory. If you dont understand this and just call it EVIL GABEN, then we have nothing more to talk about.

So if this thing was 800 dollars.. you could buy it .. and sell the ram and memory for more than 800 dollars to make a good profit ? Because the rest is basically lost. Help me here.

By then ppl will have official info or maybe even can buy ps6 and new nivida 6000 family + amd rdna5 family gpus will be in the wild, gabecube will be extremly undesirable coz of its specs alone by then, no matter the price point(which is extremly terrible too).

I actually never said anything about "evil gaben", simply that the notion that Gabe/Valve or any corporation genuinely cares about you is fanboy nonsense.

They want your money. That's all. It's not evil, it's just business.

LMAO the price is so bad it's making Apple products look like a steal. Wouldn't those M4 Mac Minis run circles around the this? Not that Mac has games but still, that price is just crazy.

That's just not how Valve operates.

COULD they have cross-financed and subsidized the Machine with their store? Probably.
And short-term, that might have gotten them more sales.
But long term, any strategy that does not rely on such cross-financing shenanigans is just a better and more secure business strategy.
THAT'S how Valve operates.

Like it or not, but it does make sense.
They won't go under if the thing doesn't sell - if it succeeds on its own, good. If not, also fine.

I mean, try to assemble a PC of comparable performance at the same price.
You'll end up in the very same price region (or higher) and not have a neat cube.

I'm not trying to say this is some great value, or a steal or that anyone should get it. I won't get it - my PC is better already.
It is a decent option for some people, though.

What I don't get is why they didn't go for something higher end (at a higher price).
Maybe their statistics showed them that for most people, this would actually be an upgrade.
