For a very short time when Steam Machine (2) was announced I thought this would be my way back to PC gaming without dealing with Microslop OS and being able to very easily play in front of TV just how I like it. I abandoned that dream very quickly and went back to praying that PS6 won't cost a thousand.

No Im not getting it I was never going to get it.
From the outset even before the final price was reveal the device was too expensive for casual gamers regardless if they are PC or Console players and the device was too weak for hardcore PC fans so from the beginning I didn't get the appeal of the device and the hardware shortages just made things worse.

Yeah, Ill get the 512 version and grab the d-brand useless companion cube shell.
I'll set it next to my living room PCMR pc and use it for second screen gaming...or 4th screen gaming. Might be good for travel one day?

Never was since my existing PC is more powerful, and the price for any computer/console hardware isn't worth it right now.
The Steam Controller I've been enjoying quite a bit though, so at least something came out of this.
Just hoping by 2028 memory pricing gets better, and we get a good upgrade to the Steam Deck, because I care more about that.

I'm torn between the 512 and 2TB.
Pricing is comparable to what a 2TB drive currently costs. I'm sure I could upgrade it myself later, but I also don't really want a future project.
Some games have such huge install files that I would most likely keep on there indefinitely, like Forza Horizon 6 and Diablo IV.
I just answered my own question typing this out. I'm going for the 2TB.

I have a few nvme's that are not being used so I can pop one of those in there that's why I'm defaulting to 512.
I will upgrade the ram as well. I have a few extra sticks.

I do have a 2TB in my OG Steam Deck that I can pop-out.
Think this will be pretty easy to tinker with and re-install native SteamOS?

You could burn the image directly to the replacement drive and pop it in or put the installer on a usb stick and install it that way. Steam OS is very portable/easy to install.

I wanted to get rid of my tower and liked the idea of replacing it with a small box but this is priced ridiculously.

Easily a HELL NO now that I bought a Powerspec G758 from Microcenter near the end of last year that's many times better than a Steam Machine.
But even if this came out way before when I was still using my old PC. It'll still be a HELL NO even back then because it's barely better than my old PC so why the fuck would I or anyone in a similar situation pay over a thousand dollars plus tax for something that's only a bit better when we could spend some more for something way better. Not to mention the default 512GB for storage is absolute pathetic as even a lot of people on their near decade old PC probably has 1 TB. 500GB is like so over a decade ago.
That's why Steam saying their Steam Machine is better than most Steam Users is a completely useless cause as mentioned above most people aren't going to pay that much for something that's only a bit better than what they're currently using and would rather just spend a bit more for something way better you know a actual big upgrade if they are going to spend instead of being stuck with another 8GB VRAM in the year 2026.
And you also have to consider how the heat on this thing is going to be if you're on demanding games or on for long hours.

I'm more of an edge case, but It's going to be a gaming PC for my bedroom TV, so I can play JRPGs and story games from my Steam library for 30-60 minutes a night or if I wanna game in bed when I'm not feeling well or on a lazy weekend morning.Unless I fall down and suffer a serious brain injury, you wouldn't catch me buying one of these. It's gotta look nice, fit in the TV stand, run quiet, and not heat up the room.
And I'd like to keep the controller on my nightstand so that I can boot it up from the controller when I hop in bed or turn the device on when I wake up.
Yes this poll seems promising!
Hopefully will get one with an extra steam controller - I already have one and use it all the time on my main PC (5080, 9800X3d)
