Steam Machine Price Announced - Starting at $1049 / £879

Just think some cunt is going to buy this, think there getting some modern PC/console experiance, then they will try to play a modern game and it will be a stuttery frame dropping piece of shit. 8gb VRAM in 2026 is criminal.

Also the end of 2027 we will probably have the Helix that will give a similar experiance with better specs, maby a bit more expensive about £1K but it will be worth it once your considering the price for this Steam box of shit.

Can someone find out DOOM Dark Ages benchmark for this? Or Indiana Jones? Or just about any game with RT set high?

Did you build or buy prebuilt? If you bought prebuilt, where did you order it from?
I did build, was hunting for better prices in many shops IN POLAND, ye im not from USA. Its PC that will let me comfortably play games for next 4-5 years, steam machine is dead in the water with performance even this year, lol.

PS5 Pro:

- Noticeably more powerful
- 2 TB versus 512 GB
- Comes with a controller vs no controller
- $900 vs $1049

$1450 for the Steam Machine to also have 2 TB and come with a controller.

Complete disaster.

Edit: I'm pretty sure the Series X is more powerful as well and you can get that for $600, lol.

It's incredible how the entire industry is dropping the ball. There is no good gaming hardware deal. PS5 is overpriced, Switch 2 is overpriced, Steam Machine is overpriced. Xbox is overpriced. It's all fucked.

Get a Time Machine and go buy a PS5 Pro for $699 15 months ago. Absolutely fan-fucking-tastic deal in retrospect.

Or go buy a Switch 2 now before the price goes up another $50. Way better deal than Deck or any of the other PC handhelds now.

The Series X is actually looking like a pretty good deal. You can get digital only one for $599 or with disc drive for $649. Comes with 1 TB storage.

Report came out they're losing hundreds for every Series X sold, probably $200+.

The GPU performance completely kills this thing when you can easily buy a 9060xt 16gb for under 500€. Single channel memory cripples the cpu performance.

If theyre going to sell a 1000€ machine they shouldve at least reworked their contracts with amd to sell them something more expensive with 16gb and ~rx9070 perf there and rack up the price even more, to 1.5-1.8k, it would still be bad because its not a fully upgradeable PC, but at least itd be useable and deserve to exist. Couldve been solid machine.

They mustve known theyll fail to deliver low end machine for cheap, but this was kid of salvageable with just a better gpu, but as it is now it just feels like a ripoff to me, its like this project went through 0 stage gates (or more it was way too late, truly awful timing for valve)

Back then, though, I still thought it was overpriced. But little did I know it would only get worse from there. I still don't know who the PS5 Pro is for, though. So I am clearly not the target audience.

Launch PS5 DE remains the best investment in gaming since 2020
I'd say it was the XBOX Series S when it got marked down to $199 for the holidays the year after it launched.

It's not the most powerful. But if you were just playing Fortnite or the F2P Hale Infinite multiplayer which don't need XBOX Live. It was an extremely cheap way to jump in.

No controller included? Are they retarded?

And lol at paying in the thousands for a machine weaker than PS5 PRO.

Should have made a next gen machine with a controller at a lower price. That's what any company with common sense would do.

The pricing is obviously affected by factors outside their control. Still though, over $1000 for a device that's struggling to keep up with my 6 years old consoles I paid $499 for? No thx.
It's a shame really, because on paper I like the idea.

I think the only people who will buy this are Valve fanboys and wealthy tech enthusiasts that just want one for the novelty.

Yeah, by selling 50,000 of the 1st shipment. But can they sell 500,000 units this year (2026)?

Yeah the inevitable "it sold out!!!" headline we'll get is literally meaningless if they don't say how many they sold.

All these machines require fast DDR and NVram chips which are manufactured by a staggeringly small number of vendors, all of whom have had their production strip-mined by AI companies leading to severe supply shortages and hence skyrocketing unit cost.

The industry hasn't dropped the ball. The ball was taken away from them by the chip suppliers and the AI companies.

The only shielding was to sign supply contracts for volume prior to the supply drying up. Which is what has somewhat helped Sony, but companies like MS who were leaning hard on JIT procurement have been fucked royally.

But why aren't they? They can afford to shave off at least $100 off the price.
Probably the same reason Valve didn't push the Steam Deck to compete with the Switch. It's just a platform to market the Steam OS and push linux based gaming forward, while also giving enthusiasts more ways to spend money on the Steam store. They don't care about selling large quantities of hardware. Just a rich company having fun while growing its ecosystem.

What a terrible idea. I don't need to cobble something together when the Steam Machine is the exact solution. It's a premium product, that's okay.
Cobble something together? You download an app, launch it and then put a code in from your pc. Enjoy the Gabecube, if you win the Steam lottery to get one. I look forward to the real world opinions from you and other folks here who do get one.

They're still might sell out the first batch given, but I question any long-term success at this price unless they start dropping it. I've loved the controller, but no interest in this.

I just don't even know why they targeted $1050, and not just push it down to $999 instead, wouldn't hit people as hard even though the difference is marginal.

Still stand that $800 they've should've just eaten the cost for to be in the realm of upper console pricing, and then sell the benefits of free online, emulation, non-game apps, etc. Memory prices really have fucked new hardware purchases, and add this to the pile.

The Steam Deck, for as much as you see it talked about online, hasn't even sold 5 million units and it released over 4 years ago. Steam Machine is gonna be ultra niche. It'll sell out its initial allotment to hardcore Steam guys but overall it's gonna sell considerably worse than the Deck which, again, moved 5 mil in 4 years.

It's kinda funny seeing the Xbots on the purple place (i.e Theorry, who basically spams marketing threads for Xbox) calling it DOA tho. Like these dudes genuinely think Helix stands a much better chance given what we know right now.

And yes that's probably the main reason they're calling Steam Machine DOA: deep down they think it gives Helix a better shot. They think they're slick in their console warring but they aren't that smart.

Meanwhile even Asha & the Xbox team don't really know what Helix is going to ultimately be yet both in terms of business model or even specifications.

FWIW the situation with Steam Deck was different: very good price-to-performance but Valve simply didn't have the volume of scale or distribution channels (or marketing campaigns) with physical retailers to reach larger sales. the product itself is/was great (tho considerably worst value-to-price after the massive price increase).

Steam Machine is starting out of the gate with the same limited volume of scale & physical distribution channels (and muted marketing) as Steam Deck but with the added caveat of worst price-to-performance. Not saying it's bad price-to-performance, but ideally in a less screwed-up environment the 512 GB Steam Machine'd be $499, maybe $599 tops (probably without a controller).

Can we get a gaming laptop with better spec than this for the same price here & there.

To me that was the thing Valve is competing against.

I wanted a Steam Machine in November but gave into RAM fear mongering in December and upgraded my GPU (5070Ti) and SSD (2TB PCIE 5.0) instead. I never would have guessed that the total for my PC upgrade seven months ago would basically cost the same as the lowest tier Steam Machine without a controller. Sheesh.

You were begging people to boycott PS5 Pro because it was missing a disk drive and 699£, but this underspec'd offering without even a controller would have been fine at 649-699?

PS5 Pro launch MSRP is now basically confirmed as the best value hardware this entire fucking generation

2TB SSD, 7800 XT, included controller for $699.
