Steam Machine Price Announced - Starting at $1049 / £879

Imo they should have just delayed it indefinitely.

There is a way that Valve could make this more appealing, to give away some games with it.
The problem is that Valve no longer makes games. But if they had something like the Orange Box, it would make this price point a lot more palatable.

There went my idea of getting one just for the novelty. I'll be sticking to my new PC once that's built. Can't f around at that price. Lol

You clearly overestimate the commitment of people to go through any type of "hassle" if is not plug and play with one hand and being blind :))
Even if it was 80yo grandma, she is fully capable to order such a service for tiny fee, she can even use landline or her flipphone to do it :P
Obviously big majority of ppl in the market arent 80yo grandmas tho :)

You could get a PS5 and NS2 for the same price as this. Or one of them and a MacBook Neo (for all the "but it's a PC!" people).

Thats why Sony PS has to think twice before considering a ps6 launch on 2027. It will be suicide and doa if its around 900 to 1000 dollars. Let it launch on late 2028 or 2029 which probably a much stabilize pricing of components by that time.

As a PS5 Pro owner, I wouldn't have an issue with a 2030 launch.

It's a mistake to launch this thing when the ram crisis is in full swing. Dead on arrival, and I say that as a guy with Steam as my main platform. Sometimes taking the L is better than digging a hole.

Who would get the 512gb version? You basically have to get the 2TB one, which means minimum price is $1350. The 512 should've been 1gb.

I decided to do a comparison for pricing with a ITX pc due to form factor. I chose to just use Microcenter versus pcpartpicker just because I really only buy parts from them.

I tried to use as close of parts as I could. DF said the 5600x is close CPU wise. Instead of choosing perfectly compatible parts I just chose the cheapest I could get hence AM5 motherboard but DDR4 memory and the 7600x since they no longer sell the 5600x.

Final parts were: 7600x/7600/A620i/16GB DDR4 SODIMM/512GB Gen 4/750w SFX/Fractal Terra
Price: $1114 before tax

You could obviously build a much cheaper device if you use mATX but the price was much higher then I though. I guess that's just how everything is now.

Very dissapointing , we thought this will be the budget pc hybrid. I really have to give my ps5 a kiss for a decent spec and design for a much cheaper price. :messenger_beaming:

As a non owner of ps5/pr0 i wouldnt either if it had 2030 tech in it, aka rdna6 and corresponding newer zen cpu, if it has 2027 tech aka zen6 and rdna5 gpu, then it should launch holidays 2027 or latest delayed to holidays 2028, otherwise we get switch2 situation when hardware launches may 2025, and not cheaply(then official price hike anyways) with 2021 or at max 2022 tech.

With those prices Gabecube is the best free marketing for Sony in years...

This trending is crazy, gaming it's becoming a luxury hobby.

Bro you can usually get those games on sale for like pennies lol. Valve understands this is a niche product and so they're fine with not moving a lot of units, but I think the price makes it too niche.

Hard no at this price point.
My deck (luckily bought before extreme price increase) and my PS5 will keep me good company until PS6.

I'm not one to tell someone how to spend their hard earned dollars, but you may be better of just running Steam Link off of an AppleTV or something if you already have a gaming PC.
What a terrible idea. I don't need to cobble something together when the Steam Machine is the exact solution. It's a premium product, that's okay.

It's really a bad idea to advertise this with a price exceeding three digits.

$999 with the controller would have been reasonable.
Yeah, I know they took a ton of time with the price but the optics of $999 versus $1049 is quite big.

It's a known thing that $99 seems lower then $100 even if it's only $1 difference.

ps6 gonna be 999$ with controller, and 2tb SSD, check how much gabecube is with those 2 basic features, not 1049$, 1428$

You seem fairly confident for someone that has no idea what the world of IT is facing right now. Servers, NAND and RAM pricing is going up 30% or more every quarter with no end in site, now PCB's are going up in price. So to assume that you will be able to get your hands on a PS6 that's going to be extremely more powerful than a PS5 at $999 means you will be waiting till 2030 or beyond.

Welcome to the new normal. Even the Switch 2 is $500. There's no way that machine should be more than $350.

Voted 599$ there but keep in mind thread/poll are from 15th nov 2025 :P
Crazy how much component price skyrocketed since then. Even in November, outlook for hardware components pricing were already not good. 2026 were beyond our wildest nightmares.

Its a bit too expensive for the performance it offers. I'd rather just move my current PC to my living room and put the steam machine money towards a new desktop. Sunshine being so good also makes weaker pc a tough sell.

Dude, I wasn't saying Valve should give away the old Orange Box.
I'm saying that if Valve still made games they could pull up a similar bundle to entice gamers.
You might not remember, but the Orange Box, was a major selling point to push Steam into mass adoption.

Literally me? It's part of why I am buying it. I already have a gaming PC

I don't understand this logic. You know it will sell out, and remain sold out. They could double their volume and it would sell out. They could 10x their volume and it would sell out. No, it won't sell as much as a PS5. That doesn't mean it is DOA.
Fucking lol dude.

They're going to sell as many as they can to blind Valve fanboys and hope they can recoup as much of their dev costs as they can. the randomized pre-order process suggests they're making fuck all of them. "selling out" of them will be absolutely hollow. Anyone can make a product launch look successful these days, long term sales are what matters and this machine has no chance with that price tag.

Its not going to sell as many as the PS5? that's a serious understatement. The market for this thing at this price is in the hundreds of thousands, not millions.
