Gothic Remake |OT| Return to the Colony

You guys got a map?

Confused Joe Biden GIF by CBS News

You can buy one in the old camp. I dont remember the name of the guy but he is close to the entrance

Annnnd I'm done, an immensely interesting game.
I loaded up Elex, but immediately bounced off it, might be "too soon" for back to back PB games.

Now I'm sad cause I got nothing to play, at least Elliot comes out tomorrow.

Lol i reinstalled elex 2 so now i'm playing both at the same time :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I played at launch for 30 hours but it was buggy and ran like shit, now it feel much better and there are things that i just prefer in elex over gothic so they are kinda complementary to each other.

Pretty lame that you can softlock yourself from joining New Camp if you do Diego Old Mine letter quest early without considering the consequences. I did not even visit New Camp yet when I did that quest, having no idea it would stop me from joining. There should be a "new camp admission quest failed" notification when you do that, or there should be another quest to do that could get you admitted. This was a problem in the OG and it is a shame it was not fixed.
Fortunately it can be resolved with console command with nexus mod loader, so at least there is that.

Could you tell me more about the console command nexus mod loader? what is this exactly?

Elex 1 is the GOAT

I made it back to old camp. Bought the colony map and old camp map. I still can't get to new camp yet. I tried to run/swim there and these raptor looking things got me.

This game got me to install both Elex games. The first one I got stuck early and quit but the second I made a lot of progress before stopping for some reason.

If you are developing a taste for "Gothic-styled" games I can also suggest stuff like these ones:

Of Ash and Steel had a pretty disastrous launch and maintains some... fairly questionable design decsions here and there, but it's in a much better state these days and overall a very engrossing and enjoyable RPG if you can look past the jank.

Archolos on the other hand is simply one of the best mods/total coversion ever made.

I went to the old mine, drew in the crawlers to kill a guard, looted him. I got some strong 2 handed weapon. I can't put it in my chest.
Does that mean I should just sell it cause the game is preventing me from having a weapon that strong early on and it'll get taken from me? It needs strength 58 and I'm at 25 I think.

The first one is trash, why you recommend that

Just for the record, THIS one is the famous "master one-handed weapon stance" they changed in this remake and I will never stop mourning its absence until we get it back though official ways or modding:

A lot cooler than having the Moron Hero holding his sword upward like a torch in this remake.

EDIT - I replaced the previous gigantic screenshot with a smaller cropped version.

Just finished it around 53 hours and level 33.

I give it a 9/10.

The ending was very abrupt and something a remake could've fixed up or made more satisfying. Not the result but execution. It detracts from the journey big time.

Chapters 1&2 are the best. I also like chapter 6 a lot even though it's very linear. Chapter 5 was the only one I wasn't a big fan of due to how long it is and you're just pouring heal items on yourself even with the ore armor from Gomez lol.

The games biggest issue overall is if you're a solid gamer you will after chapter 1&2 likely be OP as fuck. You will steam roll the rest of the game. While it's a power fantasy sure it also detracts from the game theme and brutality from the start. It loses itself but I could overlook it.

Combat was simple but fun as a two hand main. I liked the characters, music, story, pacing, biomes, and how much exploration is rewarded.

It's an old game through and through with a new coat of paint, and while it isn't KCD2, DA Origins, or Oblivion level RPG for me, it's a sliver shy of all those. Fantastic game I highly recommend.

Just saw gothic 2&3 are on sale on steam.

OG gothic players - did the remake change much in terms of gameplay, challenge, map size, quest, story, etc? Or was it primarily just a visual overhaul?

I'm confident we will get a gothic 2 remake but if the remakes are purely graphics only, id be tempted to play gothic 2 right now.

Also, what other games in their library are must plays? Seems it's all on sale. Risen, elex, etc.

If yo ucan go past the initial hour or so to get used to the controls, (which, believe me, strike you as weird at first but become surprisingly intuitive and second nature as you stick with them) there's absolutely no controindication in playing Gothic 2 even today.

I give you just getting into the first city hub (comparable to reaching the Old camp in the first) and look around a bit to get absolutely hooked.
After that, Archolos - Chronicles of Myrthana is basically "Gothic 2 mechanics tweaked and applied to an entirely new high quality RPG".

And given that the latter released in late 2021 and it was received with massive critical acclaim, that's all you need to know about how "Gothic 2 still holds up these days".

It defnitely added some content and expanded the map, but I wouldn't call them huge additions. Maybe a 20% increase or so? It's nice for veterans to see and feels organic, but it didn't set my world on fire either. The gameplay is different, but the core is the same. They did a decent enough job modernizing the combat, but if you ask me I still prefer the original's but I'm obviously biased.

Gothic 2 is its own beast and worth experiencing on its own as it is, I wouldn't want to wait 4-5 years for them to remake it. It easily has over twice the content of the original and is quite a bit better technically. Risen 1 is certainly worth playing and fills the same niche as Gothic, Risen 2 and 3 are a different story though and I personally never liked them. Elex is also trying to be Gothic, but not always succeeding. I would advice trying them only after you're done with everything else worth playing and always be careful not to burn yourself out.

Is there any reason to not immediately get MUD killed!? Dudes a complete weirdo telling me how much he loved animals!!

Also if you want to be a mage what's the proper path and is it even worth it in this game it seems more focused on sword and bow

I'm not sure if there's some "secret reward" for sticking with him long enough, but as a general rule Mud was basically conceived as a "joke character" which the only purpose was to test the player's patience.
You don't need to kill him, by the way. You just have to give him a trashing and as he stands up again he complains to you and he finally leaves the "party".

In fact, beating him up is probably the only way to get the achievement tied to exhausting all his lines, because you can't trigger the last one otherwise.

I used Mud as bait for some scavengers. He aggroed them, ran from them, they ran after him while I slipped by to get to the place I wanted. Unfortunately I never found him or his body ever again.

Time to F this dude up was funny at first but he's pissed me off for the last time lol!!

Yo guys, never played Gothic before. Is the remake worth starting with instead of the OG?
I've heard it's quite faithful to the original game but with actual tolerable combat this time around so yeah, I'd say go for the remake.

Everything I've seen so far points to it being a good remake. Like everything I see I can easily say "yeah that's X part of the original game".

Looks like I'm stopping at the game trader!

Thanks Tinto.
