Breaking: Xbox is closing down Hellblade creator Ninja Theory

Someone remake this with Asha and Satya.

I just don't understand the logic behind announcing a new game in your showcase only to close down the studio, literally, a week later. This is like a whole new level of clownery, I've never seen anything like it.
I guess tbf didn't Netease do almost the same thing with Gang of Dragon? Spending whatever big amount of money it cost to get that slot on The Game Awards, and then almost immediately shutting them down.

Unless if Nagoshi paid for that slot himself to try to get the game a new publisher, I guess :pie_thinking:.

So announcing a game from your studio that already shipped multiple games in the past decade isn't enough to save you from the chopping block.

I legit believed NT would be safe until Senua released. Coalition better hope Gears succeeds this fall, and 343 better hope Halo succeeds next month.

I'm way less surprised by this news than by the studio announcing a new game last week. Their last game was a huge flop and I didn't understand why Microsoft would continue funding another (likely) flop.

Their games are good but they dont really have any real revenue outside of just plain game sales. And thats barely good enough and you need big sales #s to make it.

I think it's insane that they're getting shut down a week after showing their new game. How haphazardly are they running this shit?

I mean, I'll admit - I was surprised that Ninja Theory didn't get the axe right after Hellblade 2 shipped, so I was surprised when they showed up with something new and figured they were safe somehow. I know a lot's changing over at Xbox in real time, but this just poor form.

It's just mesmerising how idiotic this looks after they just announced new game a week(!) ago
Seems like copilot truly took reins at microslop
This shit is just asinine, unveil a new game and then turn around and close the studio. Really, this is all so absurd it is comical. Xbox needs to die a hard, slow death and cause MSFT tremendous financial loss in the process. This is sick, it really is.

This is gonna sound kinda spicy, but I think Sony should bail them out in the interim or something. They could "salvage" the incoming collision and task them with re-activating and developing a Heavenly sword sequel.

Genuinely hate to see it cuz I'm one of the only folks who enjoyed Hellblade 2, and was excited for the direction Senua was going.

Tencent throw them a bone!

so allow the studio to completely fuck around in iceland for 6 years forensically capturing the underside of a bunch of rocks for a game that releases to a completely middling reception and terrible sales - then let them keep going to announce their next game but then pull the plug 2 weeks later?

yep, that's M$ alright.

You have to go out of your way to release the worst Call of Duty of all time. That thing did Marathon numbers and he expected a chance at doing another one? I've always thought the Treyarch stuff was confusingly overrated.

I get shutting them down, Hellblade was an overly expensive vanity project and didn't sell. But… I need to know what the process was here, they literally just announced a brand new game and went on the interview tour to talk about it.
