Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

I always thought TR Underworld had some impressive materials (for a 2009 game) and water (+ water reflections!):

They have to be leveraging AI enhanced dev tools for not only character models but also animation. Go look at the FH4/5 story character models and animations then watch those cutscenes... this is a brand new company with probably one tenth of the budget of a FH game... something smells fishy lol.

It wouldn't surprise me given SSM and ND have announced their using AI tools for their animation systems. I have no issue with developers using AI tools aslong as they improve on what we already have and not make games look worse for it -

"For example, our teams created a tool we call Mockingbird that quickly animates 3D facial models based on the performance capture. Importantly, we're not replacing human performers, but rather optimizing how we process the data from these live captures. With Mockingbird, animation work that would have taken hours can now be completed in a fraction of a second."

- Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino"

I do wonder if some Rockstar devs (mainly the artists and animators) look at this new AI tech and are rather jealous considering the blood, sweat and tears they've had to go through in the last eight years to get a game which will probably only look on par with Clutch (a new IP made by a new studio on 1/10,000 of their budget) and to even get to that level of fidelity they'll have to target 30fps. I'm sure no one is sadder about it than Take Two who could have now made the same game in four years instead of eight... at least.
Based on their LinkedIn page they are big studio at least on same size as forza horizon team around 140 developer's on studio, so if they focus on current gen only this quality is reasonable

I remember playing Underworld using a card with 512MB of VRAM, it ran nicely and looked good. Although the PC version lacked some of the graphical effects from the 360 version.
From PCGamingWiki:
Missing graphical improvementsLink
PC version does not include some of the graphical improvements from the Xbox 360 release, such as Dynamic Shadows from the flashlight and per-object Motion Blur.
Depth of Field effect is already in the game but it is disabled by default. Option for turning it ON/OFF does not appear within the game, but can be accessed via registry editor.

Beware, 'low res' (1680x1050), 16:10, badly compressed jpg screencaps from 14 years ago using an ATi HD4850 512MB.
I have screenshots from 2008/2009 but the compression is way worse so I'm not posting those.

Unrelated post, but SlimySnake SlimySnake I thought you changed your name to Hideous Snake Hideous Snake

I think I remember whoever Hideous used to be but forgot the username. At one point I also thought he was EDMIX EDMIX

For some reason I have a somewhat decent memory of MGS-related profiles on this forum.
You joined in 2022 so I don't think you've known my OG name but it was The Pliskin. You got me shocked for a bit there :messenger_beaming: Maybe you remember me as Sir Guts or Mista surely

It might be Mista but I'm not sure. I used to lurk since 2017/2018ish. Which name did you have back then?

I remember that this area looked like a soup on my 1070 with 2560x1080 resolution and TAA. With DLSS 4.5 and 4K output it looks quite magnificent:

console limitations strike again.................
from discord q/a with roadcraft developers last year

❓ Q: Is there Night time? Most of the roadwork happens during the night, so is there any way to play during nighttime in-game, with lights, halogens? (@EzioMaverick)
✅ A (V.Y.): Nighttime was in the plans, but we stumbled into a technical problem, which we had to work around. Basically, we could make it work, but we would not run the game on consoles if we did. So, for the moment, nighttime is out of current scope, unfortunately. But we'll see how it goes.

Filters/screen effects/etc.. doing the heavy lifting here, but The Complex: Expedition looks damn near photo realistic at times:

It's a pity the PC version did not have the per-object motion blur that the Xbox 360 version had. I'm hoping the Legends + Anniversary + Underworld trilogy is the next remaster and becomes a new definitive version.

At times? Sir I thought you were showing us a fucking picture you took! lol

Color grading alone goes a long way to making a game look realistic. I wish more devs knew that. Everything these days is just too bright and sunny.

This looks insane, the results matter more to me then the tech used...

When the game started, I legit thought I was watching a live action intro video and just stood there for 10 seconds before realizing I was in-game. That's never happened to me before!

Have you guys played RoboCop: Rogue City? It's on sale on Steam, so I decided to pick it up and see what it's all about.

The graphics are absolutely insane, and if you're on PC there are mods that make it look even better. The RT implementation is really damn good.

Pretty cool stuff
Gamers would remove film grain, C/A and lens distortion lmao

this is a perfect game to show people what it looks like when used properly.

I mean it works very specifically for this singular game because it's a found footage game leaning heavily into the VHS/low res/found footage aesthetic of backrooms. It would never work on 99% of games.

It does look amazing though, and runs great as well. Maxed out/native 4k on a 9070 XT setup and it's 90-120fps.

Everything the reveal footage promised is in there. Nanite. Car on car reflections, car on world reflections, World on car reflections, World on world reflections, HW lumen GI…. All of it. All the building surfaces reflect not just your car, but others too, so it's pretty obvious they are all in the BVH and not resorting to major cutbacks or tricks. Any random pause and it's all showing up exactly as it should.

Great to see it all working in tandem, and looking stable and performant.

Only "issues" I see are foliage and lack of VSMs resulting in noticeable pop in. But it seems the devs acknowledged that to the previewers and are working on it already.

UE 5's golden era is slowly but surely approaching.

But UE 6 is approaching faster. lol.

I'm watching a stream on this game and it looks boring af. Does look great but not sure how much game there is here.

Sorry, but nonsense. Shift Up CEO's wife, Jiyun Chae, is a woman, and quite fetching to boot.

I said shift up devs seldom see women.
Do you know anything about office hours in Korea ?
He spend infinitely more time with his computer than with his wife of course. He loves his computer more so all in all everything is fine.

Looks fun from a gameplay perspective, at least enemies actually attack at the same time unlike so many other games. This is their first game with any proper combat in it too.
The dodge and the way she slides all over the place during lock on looks really bad, hopefully they will improve that, the rest looks great

this, and THE ROUTINE [I posted some of my own screenshots several pages ago]
BodyCam /Unrecord as well
also the old but gold Kayne & Lynch 2

Same, I thought it was the most TR game out of all the Survivor trilogy.
It has some cringe worthy story but it's gameplay is solid and it's structure is in fact better than the one in Rise.
I still prefer 2013's reboot to them all though. Linear games >>> open world likes.

It was done by a different studio but suprsingly it's the best TR game from survival trilogy.

CD is captured by the left ideology, I hope they tone it down for their upcoming game and it will be good (Atlantis from FWH will be good for sure).

So many games utilize a parry system at this point, though. I love parrying in games, but I don't want it to be the majority of combat. There needs to be other combat systems. It can't just be parry, attack, parry, attack

Its absolutely insane that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has these textures and you have to mod the game to get a fucking normal looking game. How can developers be this lazy? For fucks sake

I played Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade with those texture mods and it was a major improvement.
It's really sad and pathetic that a company such as Square can be severely outclassed by a bunch of guys modding textures on their free time.

HRK69 HRK69 is calling me disingenuous saying I am making up the bad textures lol. Of course not every single area look bad, but a huge portion of the environments doesnt look good, hell there is reason why there is 160gb texture mod to try to fix this damn mess

I already told you that 24Gb of vram is not enough in 2026 :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Yes this one looks really great, and could be fully unveiled tommorow 🔥🔥🔥

They are beyond lazy, those fucking cunts don't even bother themselves to switch from UE4 to UE5 on the end of current gen consoles, we did not ask them to built new engine or upgrading their inhouse engine, we only ask to upgrade from UE4 to UE5 but those cunts don't even bother themselves to do this simple task

I don't like film grain, CA or lens distorsion in general but POOLS, a game relying on those effects, catched my eye a couple of years ago. The particular aesthetic I belive is called liminal space.
