Hold onto your butts.

Are we ready for one of the most disastrous days in the history of the American video game industry?

(Yup, it started with Xbox)

He's a reputable journalist, so this likely means layoffs are starting today and a bunch of studios are getting closed.
It makes me sad thinking that the studios who've done the worst work, the ones behind the newer Halo and Gears games, are probably safe, whereas Double Fine are almost definitely gone.

Hopefully the people with talent at Double Fine saw this coming a long time ago and have prepared.

At least Asobo are independent, so they can't be shut down by Microsoft.

I guess Arkane and Obsidian might also be in trouble, but that seems way less likely, unless if they really are making radical cuts.

I'm guessing it might have to do with a large scale of layoffs, probably targeting people who reeera supports?
If true it will be a bloodbath. They will never get rid of the Activision tax.

Maybe they knew about this a while back and its why they made the seemingly commercially unviable Kiln, one last fun hurrah for them

No, that's not what he said, the translation is wrong because it should be "yup, it started at Xbox". He only said that layoffs had started at Xbox.
It could mean either. It could mean either. However, he does say the "American video games industry", implying it's more than just Xbox.

Are you guys not paying attention.

Xbox is losing money.
Xbox will be made independent.
What happens to companies that lose money , have no clear path forward and are independent but need significant capital to keep going?

I'm not sure how related everything else is, but Tom Henderson is doing the Insider Gaming Weekly Episode right now and mentioned he already heard what is going to happen and he heard about a studio closure as well. He also mentioned Gears of War E Day has a budget close to 400 million and that the decision to make it exclusive was made about 5 to 6 weeks ago, validating what Aaron Greenberg said. Cannot timestamp right now as it's still live.

Got it, makes more sense it started AT Xbox

I hate to be such a cold person but years of making bad decisions from the leadership and years of making sub par games tends to kill a game company

One of the most disastrous days in the history of the American video game industry is on Phil Spencer and Mike Ybarra (though admittedly Ybarra tried to go against him a few times and was over ruled) decisions they made

All of this could have been avoided by making better games and holding those studios to higher standards

I survived 13 years in total in one of the most ruthless professions out there that about only 23k people have ever experienced in its 150 years of being on our planet

Do better or find other jobs
