[Jason Schreier] The Real Reason E3 Died

Not a click bait title, Schreirer caused all of this by leaking major announcements six months early, it made the rigid Asian men in suits decide to develop in complete social isolation in pagoda office fortresses until the game goes gold.

Yeah, that was a huge part of it. Gamers think E3 was all about debuting these cool trailers for us kids to get hyped for, but the only reason they did it in a big building with thousands of attendees was because actual business had to be done there once the trailers and talks finished.

What started as a closed showcase for buyers looking to pick product for the next holiday season, mutated into an ultra expensive distraction for publishers and platform holders that actually yielded very little of profit.

The only people who actually liked E3 were the people who chattered about its "winners and losers" online. Even the journo's had a love-hate with it because although it was good for content, the actual experience of E3 week was exhausting and annoying.

E3 died because it no longer served any purpose.

Ive come around the last few years.
What we have now is much better.

1. Expensive fees by E3 for developers and publishers to get booths and other things
2. Covid sped up it's death
3. Booth babes and extravagance became passe and no longer was needed or wanted at E3

Social media / Youtube.
It wasn't possible to put up a video online and get 500 million eyes on it back in the 90s or 2000's.
E3 was advertising, and advertising of today is streamers, youtube, social media, etc.

I love E3, it was like my version of the superbowl or whatever sports trash people care about.
But I'm honestly surprised it lasted as long as it did.

What events are similar to E3?

I would definitely go to those.
Not video game specific, but a lot of other "industry" events have shrunk over the years. The internet, access to streaming, retail demise, corporate cost consciousness, etc. have all been factors in the decline. Certainly been the case in my industry with shrinking attendance each year, from both exhibitors and attendees. In talking with buddies who are in completely different industries, they notice the same. Not all events and industries have struggled though.

Eh, trade shows even without the public viewership can pretty often become ultra expensive distractions (in relative business sense at least; you could probably find nonprofit events where they're still spending more on a booth and tchockes than makes sense at a glance.) Yes, E3 became a media event and so had to look high-caliber from the outside as well as inside, but the razzmatazz of attracting business is inherent to the Trade Show concept, and Marketing in any major business will fit whatever they can get away with on their budget outlines for events like these.

It's also hard to say there was "very little of profit" in studios putting on a show at E3. Stars have been made at these shows. The open access to media and social marketing has certainly tamped down the potential value of these shows as opposed to the big bang dreams of the past, E3 itself is probably pointless since the whole thing can now be accomplished with a video stream and some conference calls, but there's still some truth to the old adage that you've got to spend money to make money.

Wow you guys really came around to liking and giving a fuck about this turd, huh?

Just like the worthless Pearce threads that get posted he's in the complete same "Who Gives A Fuck" league.

Not necessarily. We're just tired of every thread about a Schreier report ignoring the topic so that dudes can post old memes and gripes. We all knew what we were getting into from the headline, we can talk about the topic rather than the guy who said it.

The real reason E3 died is they kicked out the booth babes

I still don't understand what metrics companies are using to determine that keeping E3 dead is good for business. I know it generated a lot of hype and shopping lists. Trade shows are fun. It just illustrates the disconnect between the people making the games and the people buying them.

Heh, and then every once in a while, some industry event pops up in Dubai and Marketing departments blow their tops like it's 1999...

You all are still giving this virus clicks and attention. He's a shit stirring plague on the industry. Always has been.

The hypocrisy on here is really palpable sometimes :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Makes sense.
If my controller gets thrown against the wall I need to know I can drive over to Gamestop to pick up a new one.
Retailers can still have hardware.
Gamestop needs to stock more 3rd party controllers.

The real reason Schreier has a wooden folding chair in the corner of his bedroom.

Years ago my friend saw a frumpy couple and said "you have no idea how happy I am they found each other" took about 15 years for me to realize that it's not fucked up when I saw him and his wife lol

And now we've got his agents outside measuring oxygen density, cigarette butt counts and what type of shoes the staff are wearing.

The internet algorithm reach got so big and is far cheaper than spending tens of millions to built your booths every year.

Simple.

Based response.

Giving him or Alanah clicks or broadcasting it is dip shit behavior.

At least with Alanah we get giant melons pictures.

With this it's a waste of everyone's time.

So explain how the Tokyo Games Show still exists (and is awesome)

I assume things are much cheaper in Japan, and the culture there still operates in that traditional manner when it comes to gaming and entertainment.

The west is cooked on these things. Especially the access media.

Wasn't there some shady things going on with the company who owned E3 at the time that forced Sony's hand (then the rest followed)? I'm trying to remember the details.

Probably right about that, though the last few years we've seen a lot of non-Japanese companies show up to the show with big booths and stage presentations. Hell, last year Microsoft basically treated it like "Fall E3".

Man, I really have "attend TGS" on my bucket list of things to do. I probably won't get a chance before kids are off to college… which is a while.

Perhaps it's simply because a certain number, if not all, of the participants would have been insulted, booed, or even attacked in the face of the unprecedented, profound lies and mediocrity of their product, whose sole purpose, in the end, is to satisfy investors rather than the players. Because, quite frankly, we were being treated like idiots at E3, and it was becoming more and more obvious.

I was in Japan last year when it was happening but didn't win the ticket lottery. But it seems like a pretty awesome setup.

Demos hitting digital distribution certainly contributed as well, I'd say.

Eh, even during E3's days, releasable demos were a thing once or twice, where possible. This was Gamescom, but P.T. happened at a trade show.
...it was actually Silent Hills. Shhhhh!

Btw, the same E3 demos sometimes came home anyway; the demos on PS Underground discs could sometimes be what was on the show floor.
