Final Fantasy Resonance announced (Releases October 22, 2026)

No, but it's built from the bones of a predatory gacha
Not sure why people are struggling with this concept. They had a game that was live for 10 years where they created a ton of sprites, artwork, characters, locations, scenario writing etc. and it's since been shut down. They wanted to make a "budget" pixel art Final Fantasy game, so they decided to simply retool their existing assets and make a new game out of it. Just re-using the art and story from a mobile game like this doesn't automatically make the end product a mobile game.

How much work they ACTUALLY put into this game remains to be seen, but at the very least it looks like they added a bunch of stuff (including an all new battle system) that wasn't in Brave Exvious. I imagine it'll be similar to Octopath 0, where those of us that played the mobile game will know right away this has the same characters and some story beats, but it'll be its own thing. I knew it was based on Exvious from the moment the trailer dropped.

So, they're slashing development costs by reusing existing assets and slapping Final Fantasy on the label?

Based Square Enix.

This looked crazy good, and I liked how dark aspects of the game appeared to be. Hopefully it's got some genuine ambition behind it… more than the usual World of FF spin off.

I just don't understand why they put in all the resources needed for a brand new game, but put it towards a mobile game rerigging. Looks great visually, hope it turns out good, but there's just no avoiding that this is a "museum-type" game like World of FF. Why not take the approach of 4 Heroes of Light? Cautiously excited for this, but not getting my hopes up too much.

I think that's what square is hoping for. There are enough people in here glazing this game that their strategy seems to be working.
Octopath 0 was a mobile game and the full release was excellent.

Hopefully this also means we'll see more remakes or new games with this engine now that the seal is broken.

Almost every high-res 2D game looks extremely cheap to me.
How about Vanillaware games?

I am not a huge HD-2D fan, despite being a 2D/pixel-art die hard. I find the over the top depth of field too much, and we're a handful of these games deep now and they look way too samey vs the SNES hay day of Square RPGs where games had really distinct looks.

Hell, I think the PSX/PS2 era 2D games were kinda peak for pixel art. Vanillaware keeps the 2D dream alive though.

Remake VI and go to town reworking the second half of the game. Plenty of games have bad second halves. Just look at Dark Souls after Anor Londo, but FFVI has the worst drop off of them all.

Final Fantasy Ever Crisis can't die soon enough so Square can remake it into an offline game.
Not really related but this got me looking up about the really really old, pre-iPhone Japan-only mobile game FF7 Before Crisis, in which you play as members of The Turks. Apparently fans made an unofficial remake that you can get here https://richterwilker.itch.io/before-crisis-remake

German Shocks German Shocks Ok, I fired up the exe near the bottom of the directory, and well, I have no idea what I'm doing and I died pretty much instantly haha, but it runs and I love the atmosphere.
I wonder if there's a readme with the controls in here somewhere...

I scrolled down far enough on the itch page and I found this.
Controls - arrow keys = movement

z = fire

x = menu

space is interact/talk

esc = cancel
