Thief: The Dark Project - Remastered by Nightdive Studios

Cool. Will definitely pick this up. Although, I was hoping for Alien Trilogy or Dark Forces 2 to be their next remake.

I replayed this not even long ago and honestly, very light remaster if I've ever seen one. It comes to a point where I don't even know why nightdive studios even make them and then charge premium price.

That's pretty cool, curious when they show more how it will stack up against the original game with graphic mods, or how much this can be modded further.

When they get around to Thief 2 though:

It's still a masterpiece to this day. Not sure if it needs a remaster, the current version can be modded to run properly on modern machines with community patches.

Could be cool! But I'm with mèx mèx , don't think the game needs a remaster beyond maybe some upscaled cutscenes.

In any case happy that this exists if it makes more people checkout this amazing game.
Just hope they make sure custom content works, otherwise they can keep it.

Could be that they are checking interest for a potential new game.

I think that it will have FM support.

From the store page:

...mission selector, and built-in support for custom campaigns.

Built-in support for custom campaigns, enabling access to thousands of hours of additional content.

There were rumors prior to this on TTLG about new engine for Thief 1/2 called OpenDark or fork called Darkness, it may have something to do with this remaster.

Still that's quite a drop. I'm huge fan of both Thief series as well as Dishonored. It's nice to hear Stephen Russell yet again.

Always wanted to play this

Well go play it now

I see no reason why you would play premium price for this "remaster" over the ~$2 you'll see multiple times for Thief . Unless you're not on PC.

Nightdive studio has the habit of just sprinkling mods from the community into their "remasters". If they're using their engine then you'll lock yourself out of a ton of mods and other projects.

I'm a fan of their System Shock remaster, not so much their quick cash grabs with barely any changes.

Day 1, day 1, day 1..... So wanting to play this on switch while in bed, in the dark. Between this, system shock 2, Gothic remake and the new bond game, it's been an amazing year for classics.

Now if the do the 2nd and add in some splinter cell, that would be the cherry on top. Throw in some porting of megaman legends, and vagrant story while we are at it.

Thief like SS2 before it doesn't have much left for a remaster, it's perfectly compatible with modern systems/arbitrary resolutions etc. thanks to NewDark and the fan patches at least also bring models/textures up to the spec of the sequel. I guess the new guard/prop models are nice if unnecessary.

Doubt this needed a remastered considering the fixes and mods and whatnot we have on PC for it. Would've loved a remake

I'll take it honestly. Nightdive taking lite-touch to stuff like this and System Shock 2 amounting to QoL and mods implemented in an official package is great without having to tweak stuff to get it working.

Just my 2c and likely why SMT 3 nocturne is my favorite remaster.

I tried doing that just recently on my steam deck and failed... multiple issues with controls and visuals... like I had to edit a file just to get mouse look to work 😵‍💫

so imo it doesn't hurt having a version that just works on modern hardware

They didnt even bother to add dynamic shadows or at least AO? Like wtf?

There remasters keep getting lazier and lazier. :(

It does not.

The engine is the same that powered Quake 2.

It's needed for console. I work at a pc all day last thing I want to do is game on it anymore and I prefer switch to my steam deck for weight. Try laying down with a steam deck your hands will start to get tired.

Granted I doubt it will have fan made missions, but maybe they will throw in something.

well remastering a game lile this limits your ability to improve the lighting a lot. because the game is designed around fully static lighting and hiding in the dark is a core part of the gameplay.

so if you add dynamic shadows that would either clash extremely with the static baked lighting, or lead to confusing level design that makes it hard for you to parse where you can hide or not.

It wouldnt clash that bad. Ive seen it done before it would look ok. Same with AO. There lazy.

No fucking way. Now I'm going to have to play if for like the 5th time now.

I wonder if Haunted Cathedral Exploit is kept in.

Great to see more life in the Thief franchise. Some QOL, smoothing out a few rough edges and bringing it to modern systems should be enough. Still have to get back to the VR game at some point.

So nice to see this... It feels like another life that thief was going strong... I am so stoked for this but I would love a deadly shadows remake as well that game felt ahead of its time.

This is a game i do worry a little about being "remastered". Lighting, color and rendering play a major role in the gameplay department

If we get this modern style slightly gray is night nonsense it will kill all the fun.

Ill be looking at this very closely before buying, its not a boomer shooter where you can simply up the res

This is one of the best re-masters announced at the show. I played through Thief 1 and 2 a few years ago and had to use a bunch of fan-made patches to get both games to run reasonably well on modern Windows. having a Nightrive remaster treatment is a good thing.

I would have liked a remake for the first two Thief games but still keeping the original soundtrack and voice actors, that made most of the heavy lifting for the two games atmosphere.

These dudes have made a living off of doing shit that's worse than what you can grab off of Nexus mods. There needs to be a new tier of this stuff, Remake>Remaster>>>Nightdive Studios.

100% agreed. Basically bringing up to a level similar to a fully modded experience, but without any work required by the user and likely with other optimizations/modernizations being implemented.
