I can't speak to his motivations, believe it or not I've never even played any of the Gears games, so beyond the odd sound-bite he's kinda irrelevant to me.
The only thing I've ever really given him props for is being honest enough to actually speak the truth about what most Gen X devs thought about the internet gaming community! Of course public support and lionization is great, but the dark flip-side, the nasty criticism, the constant threat of what happens when you inadvertently displease vocal online groups... who the hell wants that hanging over their heads when they're just trying to do a job ?
Being real, say you were an environment artist or a coder on something like that new God Of War game, you've put years of work into getting to a top studio on a big IP, and you have endless Youtube videos ginning up hate and anger purely because of creative decisions you were not party to, and because it fits into a pre-existing narrative that can be easily exploited for clicks.
How would you feel ?
You aren't going to feel any love for those who are profiting off your discomfort, that's for sure.
