I want devs to return to prioritizing maximum graphics at 30fps again...

I feel like I've only been disappointed with the graphics of this generation. Most games look barely better than PS4 games and I partially blame the shift to trying to make every game have a performance mode.

Hear me out. What if devs made a game at 1080p/30fps with INSANE graphics? I don't mean they should maximize reflection quality with ray tracing and use all of the 30fps frame budget on that. I mean actually make something that is so insanely detailed that the PS5 can ONLY do 30fps on that game.

I can't be the only one that feels like this generation has been PS4.5 right? Looking at the new God of War game, I can't even tell a visual difference from the 2018 GoW game.

I still think EARLY PS4 games were peak graphics. Stuff like DriveClub, The Order 1886, Infamous Second Son, Killzone Shadowfall BLEW ME AWAY back then. Then as the PS4 generation went on, developers seemed to start to get lazy and then into the PS5 era, nothing really changed.

This gen was a stop gap because of that 30 -> 60 jump in standard, true next gen to PS4 generation will be PS6 gen.

I think in the end most people prefer fluid gameplay over graphics (me included).

Get a PC.

errr how about no, graphics haven't improved much because we've basically hit the limits of rasterisation, any improvements now will come from RT and path tracing and consoles are not expensive enough to have the hardware to handle that to an extent where it's transformative.

And somehow, rofif rofif returned.

They already scale the game down to 30fps, you aren't gonna get much better if they only target it.

Marginal gains at best, still not enough to be a generational uplift if you aren't already impressed.

We've already lost moore's law with chips, so AI and other methods are gonna have to make up for it.

Silky smooth 60 FPS is the happy place. Don't care about the hyper realistic details, give me better physics, thousands of units on the screen, tons of cool effects, buttery animations. Things that add to the quality of the experience more so than being simply more detailed with fancier lighting.

We plateaued graphicly a while back. It's probably downhill from here given that the Graybeards are retiring and being replaced with worse talent (woke smooth brained AI/tiktok users with the attention span of a goldfish.) We'll see what happens with quantum computing.

God of Nope...

Graphics are good enough. In fact IMO most AAA chase graphics and cutscenes far too much as it is and it shows with decline in game sales in most interactive movie companies ...

You had this gen pushing for 60fps, trying for 4k, and rt so the detailed graphics were going to take a hit, but this should all be sorted out for the most part for next gen. I don't actually mind 30fps that much.

I used to be this way too but the advent of temporal scalers ruined it. When you have 33.33ms between frames it makes things ghost horribly compared to 60 fps and beyond. It's completely counterintuitive to the goal of having peak visuals.

I don't care if you people (yes, "you people") get your path traced 1080p/30fps max eye candy whatever setting. That's fine. I honestly want you to get the mode that you want.

But I want every PlayStation game I play to have a mode that runs at a rock solid 60fps. I'm fine with upscaling from a lower resolution. I'm fine with skipping ray tracing if needed. Whatever minimum sacrifices they have to make for a smooth 60fps mode, I want the 60fps. I have a PC along with my PS5 Pro for this reason.

Thankfully we know now 75%-ish of people are setting the graphics option to Performance at the OS level. That tells me performance modes should continue to be a thing for years to come.

Yeah, this will not happen. Sure, the games will have an jump in visuals, but the 30fps option with better visuals will still be there.

100% agree with OP

Imagine the graphics they could push for NBA 2K26 if they didn't need to reach 60

I want to see Lebron's skin stretch realistically when in motion, so that wrinkles form and disappear depending on the motion. I want dynamic sweat and perspiration systems that depend on the room temperature and accurately soak and dry different types of clothing materials based on the stadium's humidity and temperature you're in. Instead of pushing technical wizardy we're getting higher refresh rates -_-

I think 30fps looks hideous and 60fps looks beautiful, so for me the generational leap HAS been the move to 60fps. I literally haven't played a 30fps game since I got my PS5 on launch day 5.5 years ago, and I'll never go back.

As for whether the generational leap has been a good one or not, otherwise? I think it's a big improvement - I think a lot of people would be surprised how rough a lot of PS4 games look now - but yeah I think there's an element of it being more of a refinement of the last generation. I suppose roughly speaking it should've been about ray tracing and hugely better textures and geometry via the SSDs, but the hardware isn't quite there for RT really, and cross gen has hampered the SSDs.

I do think the next few years (basically the next cross gen period) will see some truly TRULY next gen games. Personally I thought that Faye game looked absolutely stunning, for example, but even if you don't, there are plenty of others.

When did they stop? It's still that way on consoles. Thats why we get quality and performance presets on base consoles. Probably won't change next gen, either.

Couldn't agree more!

Gee why has this generation felt the same as last generation? Durrr...

It's because the obsession with 60 fps means games look about the same as last gen.
