Jason Schreier‬: Bungie is planning significant layoffs, Destiny 3 is NOT in active production

Surprising absolutely no one. They already spun off part of the studio into a separate team. Destiny 2 is stopping development when the plan up until recently was continuing content for it. So the only game they'll need a fair amount of people for is Marathon and you can only find roles for so many people on a game like that until it's just pointless bloat. It doesn't sound like they have any other major projects in the works at the moment. Whatever gets greenlit, if anything, will still spend years in pre-production. They have over 800 people, last I heard. That is way too many people for their current situation to justify a payroll for. Hell, I'd argue Bungie has had way too many people for a long time.

Bungie had what every single studio and publisher have been trying to sell their souls for: a successful live service.

And instead of reinvesting in the product that was keeping them afloat, they spread their funds to every little vanity project they could think of. Idiots. Pure idiots.

Bungie was better when Activision was forcing them to meet deadlines and actually release new games.

Yeah, I said this a long time ago. Under Microsoft and Activision, they had to listen to higher ups and push out what they said they would, but the moment they went independent, they not only ruined Destiny, but they slowly ruined themselves.

Even this Sony buyout, they asked that one of the conditions be that they stay independent and well, here they are now.

It's mindblowing that their incompetent leadership wasn't let go. The studio pretty much admitted that they've got nothing major in active development and designing a huge project like Destiny 3 will take long months (if not several years). What are they supposed to do with hundreds of their employees? Send them all to work on supporting Marathon that's already failing?

Why? It worked. They cashed out. Sony got caught holding the bag. Remember, Destiny was one of Spencer's favorite games and even Xbox walked away when Bungie was putting feelers out there for sale because they said the price didn't match the books.

Bungie may have never made any real money the whole Destiny life cycle. They just kicked the can with new side deals as they went along. They then spread out before the sale at the end of Covid and we saw what happened from there. Sony and the fans who put up with the devs who "were listening" failure after failure. Eventually the fanbase got tired of it and they put just enough to close out Destiny with the final shape before imploding.

The funny thing is I even like Marathon, but I have seen enough to understand anyone's dislike or disdain for the studio from years worth of BS. Bungie has run out of rope it seems for most. Marathon is the last hope it seems.

I don't want to see anyone lose their job, especially in this economy, but Bungie is way too fat and not producing anything.

I expect to see like 60% of people laid off, just total gut job. Sony is done with this shit.

I mean there's probably some artists or musicians that don't deserve it and I wish them the best in a swift recovery, but there's a shit ton of people free loading at that company that absolutely deserve to be fired. 800 employees and they produce so little.

LOL, the concord 3 trilogy will be completed soon, don't forget sony still have more concords on the way like fairgame$ and Horizon hunters gathering, along with the ultimate neil cuckman fetish game. Ps6 will cost at least 2k usd.

To the surprise of basically no one except shills. Was already expecting waaaay before D2 closed support. You can not justify this game with that amount of players, someone would have to pay eventually.

They will only let a skeleton crew to manage Marathon just enought to let that thing alive and with updates, spending the least amount of money possible.

Welp they had a good run I guess, game over.

Still remember when they made Halo, being at college when 3 came out, and during some charity event at the college there were some TVs set up with frat boys playing next to nerds because the series crossed firmly into the mainstream.

Now we get them bringing back an old IP to coast off the extraction shooter trend, and have robots look like Marilyn Manson in that album where he was androgynous alien.

This is going to be the 4th major layoff the studio will have ever since things started going downhill for this Studio and looking at their current player numbers I don't expect Marathon and whoever is left at Bungie to last that much longer Sony has closed down studios before for little reason and they have plenty of reason to completely let got of Bungie right now.

3.6 billion thrown in the trash.
With 1 billion or more, Sony could have bought Pearl Abyss, gaining 3 new quality IPs, and its own Pokémon.

well, already seen from afar since marathon disaster, they should have back up plan like D3 rather than only develop solely on marathon

Cut them from 850 to 600. Make sure every sniff of DEI is gone.

Get them on a new single player game with co-op support.

Hopefully profit.

The worst purchase in gaming history is the gift that keeps giving. How come everyone saw this coming except Bungie and Sony?

Sony should form a dedicated Destiny studio free from the Bungie baggage. Have them work on D3 while they, maybe along with an external studio, port D1 to PC/modern consoles.
The way they are mishandling the IP is borderline criminal at this point, especially with the amount of money they are dumping on total garbage.

A number of Bungie staff, including some of the most experienced developers, have been working within Sony/PlayStation studios over the past few months and no longer at Bungie.
Yeah, starting last year Sony started absorbing some of Bungie. They are working on gaas games under Playstation umbrella. They are presumably safe from layoffs

We'll see.

We went from 300 before Marathons launch to "over 400" last month. The Marathon team and the non Destiny 3 incubation projects are all I care about. I have a feeling the Marathon team may grow to 500 pretty soon. Oh yeah!

If Bungie does have layoffs, then the number of devs working on Marathon will go down, not up.

Math for the win!!!!

If sony ever tried selling off Bungie they might be worth basically zero.

Sony would keep the IPs.

So Bungie's value is whatever another would pay for their master overseer gaas expertise. Which past bunch of years is a goose egg.
