• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

State of Play announced for June 2. Over an hour long, with an extended look at Wolverine

Bring back Socom and I will pretend like Concord never happened.
How would you successfully advertise the sequel to a 20 year old military shooter franchise to 20-something gamers who are busy playing CoD, Battlefield, hero shooters, and flavor of the month extraction shooters?

I have been thinking about this, and my conclusion is that Warhawk and Syphon Filter have more personality to where a new entry could work for them more successfully.

Gonzito Gonzito , our banned papito @James Sawyer Ford is glazing you wishing he could still post here. For a dude calling everyone here gay he sure did describe your pic with a lot of accuracy while saying everyone here has the same avatar.

This, this and forever this
If you want to catch both new and old audience you need a soft reboot of this IPs, not targeting AAAAAAAA budget but small/medium starting projects with good content value and "gamer focused"

This should be used any time someone suggests a new SOCOM, Killzone, or whatever. These are dead IPs that mean absolutely nothing to the current market.

If Playstation has any balls they will do 1h horizon hunter gatherer deep dive and announce the new playable character made specially to please the fans : spanish buff papito with sunglasses and no shirt on

If every single game has to appeal to 20-something Adderal riddled gamers we are truly fucked...

I could see a smaller scale project aimed at fans of the old Socom games and games like Arma, Tarkov and Ready or Not.

That game Wardogs understands what it is and who it is for. I was hoping for a team to reboot or remake Socom with a similar mindset.

Not gonna happen I know but one can dream.

I mean they are streaming this in theaters...something big could really happen

AI is telling me Sony hasn't done that since 2018. That can't be right, can it? Feel like it was done more recently than that. Either way, yeah.....this seems to be a pretty big deal this time. Hope so.

The older gaming community can't keep shunning the youth and pushing them to the side year after year for selfish nostalgia requests. If we do that then the top 10 on most platforms will never change and they really will be the forever games they claim to be.

It's unsustainable.

Plus by doing such a thing we just ironically give in to the usual shitty cycle of old men saying 'kids these days' that boomers did to gen x and that gen x did to millennials. It's one of the first signs of getting old, but that doesn't mean the path has to be followed 100%.

However, from saying all of that I can see a small scale AA project working in the vein of Ready or Not, like you said in your second point.

Spider Man 2 was rushed IMO. I absolutely love Venmom plotline and it seemed like they cut out like a whole third act and rushed to the ending. Then side/post game content was absolutely atrocious.

Wasnt that due to them making a Venom game?

I think you maybe just unintentionally touched on what I have noticed about when things get bashed as "woke" versus getting away with progressive themes. It's not just a matter of hitting the checkmarks I think the larger issue is if people feel like the product has no soul and is the result of some made-by-committee slop. If it's well written and has a lot of passion and emotion behind it people will (generally) be more okay with progressive messaging. Also any type of attack on intelligence of the audience (whether in the game or by the creators) is a big no no.

Generally ok? Man..... People absolutely love progressive messaging when it's done well.

I'd like to see the show start with Wolverine gameplay and then end with either Intergalactic or GOW offshoot gameplay. I don't think that's asking too much.

Then the icing on the cake would be a few cool third party titles and maybe a surprise or two. Perhaps an announcement of Astrobot 2 or alternatively an announcement of a classic IP making a return.

They can label the video whatever they want, but if I don't see a hud, that's not gameplay. That trailer was a carefully curated collection of shots from the game. I'm not doubting that those clips weren't in-engine shots, but when we say we want to see gameplay, a one minute 50 seconds video collage is not what we're asking for.
FWIW I'm surprised this leaked gameplay never was discussed much.

I loved Venom as a kid but I have no idea how to connect with that past self anymore. Venom seems generic AF today. He's just steroid oil Spiderman from space?

That's an incredibly accurate description of how modern pop culture treats Venom

Space baldie Jordan's flashback with head full of hair incoming. Did they add it back because of the negative reception? Or was that the plan all along, as hinted by the group photo in the reveal? Everyone screaming at each other all over again. "Is Intergalactic another woke slop?" thread will be up in seconds, right next to "Is Wolverine another woke slop?", "Is Goddess of war another woke slop?" and "Break in is definitely another woke slop". Heck, the entire first page could be filled with those.

Have to respect the balls of Millie A still being around after being exposed as a complete fraud

Then we will have to respect all "insiders"

I get what you are saying. Although Socom was ruined by chasing COD and losing its identity with Socom 4.

I just want Sony to take some risks on some smaller scales with some old IP.

The success of games like Arma and Ready Or Not show there is a fan base for these types of games and there really isn't anything in the third person space outside of Ghost Recon and Division but they are ruined by Ubisoft being Ubisoft.

Although the success of GR Wildlands further proves there is a market for a new Socom if done right. Especially with more attention and care built into the PVP portion.

Finding the right studio to do a new Socom is the tough part. I would see if Arrowhead (Helldivers 2) would be into it.

Dev build was leaked I played some of it.

Before he was a generic monster, he was a genuinely terrifying psychological horror concept
modern pop culture

finger-wag-no-no-no.gif

Venom is one thing you guys can't blame on modern culture. His character has had bad representation after bad representation since the 2000s Spiderman 3 movie and video game. There's even some critical things one could say about his mid 90s extreeeeme version from the comics.

The character is a constant narrative problem, but a ton of teenagers back then (including myself) thought he looked cool and the aspect of him being an edgelord was cool. After 30 years of this character's mess and his existence ruining yet another Spiderman game, my eyes are finally open now to what he truly is.

A ruiner of stories and character arcs.

By saying that, I'm very happy that Wolverine will not have Venom.

Isn't Colossus straight and often in a relationship with Kitty Pryde?

Also, Professor X being in a wheelchair isn't the crux of his entire character nor is the team being from different countries. The competent writers for X-Men know that shoving Storm's race, Professor Xavier's physical disability, or any of the other team member's shortcomings into stories that feel jarring or irrelevant is obnoxious and pandering. I would hate to read an X-Men comic where the entire issue is Storm bitching about being a black woman or Xavier complaining about his wheelchair not working and how the world hates disable people or some shit.
well done...
