Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

I have PTSD from those fucking dog kill streaks
LOL. You would had hated playing against me. I was good at that game killing people from far away with STG44 and DP28 using stopping power, protected by bouncing betties at my flanks. Called in dogs most matches. The tank maps were kind of shit though especially the one with the big church in the middle. Some of those maps were way too big (church map and Seelow)

Ever since the game fell off Bungie has had to sign on to some questionable tie-ins.

You know, if more games actually did silly shit like this Id be interested.

I'm not sure season 2 will bump the numbers for a prolonged period of time. Is a night version of an existing map that exciting?
It'll be interesting to see what happens. The peak was 88k on launch day. It's now about 12k.

Some gamers think an extraction reset will drive back gamers who got tired of it all and want to grind back starting over. But then some gamers think a wipe will just make some gamers leave.

Season 2 has a new class and night map. And all the new PVE kind of stuff is suppose to come out at some point. Cryo 24/7 is coming out soon too.

It looks like CCU hasnt improved lately based on the new info, though the big weekly drops have smoothed out to smaller % decreases.

All in all, it seems like CCU should ramp up soon. Just a matter of how much and how long it lasts. Only way it bombs out is if those people who predict a seasonal wipe will turn away lots of gamers outweighs all the new stuff coming and gamers who like getting back into with every season like a Diablo gamer on season 10.

One time I got lucky and was at the point where all the dogs jumped into the map. Wiped them out and ruined the streak. It was the only call of duty I played on hardcore, I miss it.

It's $4B by now for Bungie considering there's no doubt annual losses since 2022. Then add in Concord and all the failed GAAS tomfoolery projects that never released they had and it's surely $5B+ by now.

Assuming Sony's big SP games range from $100-300M (let's say Ghosts at $100M and ND/Insomniac games at $300M), Sony could had literally focused on funding maybe 5 games at $200M each on avg. $1B.

Sony could had 5 good SP games and still keep $4B.

Even just looking at Bungie's buy price at $3.6B, that alone is equivalent to 12 $300M top budget SP games. Out of the $3.6B, employee retention was $1.2B. So never mind them working on extra projects or anything. Just to keep them is the same as funding 4 $300M games.
And yet they have the audacity to keep nickel and diming customers and close the greatest remake dev bluepoint that would have cost them in a year what Bungie costs in a month.

This is the consequences of taking your Japanese studio and putting it in the hands of greedy and senseless Americans. We all know Sony America is when Sony lost its way.

It may hit 20 25k but that'll be it then itll wind down again, I don't see season 2 doing much to make a dent. And thats being generous.

I go back to the main issue, it's an ugly game.. You gotta have cool fun characters and loot and it has neither

100% this.
They are willing to bend and make changes everywhere else in the game, even experimenting with adding PvE, but their sacred cow is their ass ugly character designs.
Yea that's why I think it'll never get off the ground, all these games have a look that is enticing and welcoming.. Like subnautica I never played but always sorta noticed, but it has as look that calls to me never playing a second, and marathon does none of that

Yeah, you aren't wrong about that. Marathon will have to overcome its aesthetic in order to find success, and that's a tall order to fill.

Yea I also think that the added pve is a fools errand because my position is if I liked this game I'd be bugged if I bought it based on it being pvp and here they are now going to dedicate alot of time and resources to make it more pve... It's why I think this game is so fucked because from the getgo they didn't clearly think out the type of game it's meant to be, they went full in on extraction and that was a mistake.

And now they want to be like "oh hey wait pve players, wait we will change it"... Nah, we're good.

The fact is, they are screwed either way. The people who already care about this game don't care about the PvE, they're playing it for what it currently has, and the PvE crowd aren't going to come running to a game that was advertised and promoted as a hardcore PvP game from day one. So what's going to happen is Bungie is going to piss off a lot of Marathon's current audience by taking focus away from what they thought made the game great in the first place, PvP, in order to chase a bunch of PvE players that probably won't show up anyway.

Marathon is Bernie, and Sony and Bungie are going to walk this dead man around and pretend he's alive until they can't anymore.

Greatest movie ever and so true haha

But yea that's what I mean really either way they're screwed and why it was a bad idea to begin with to go so hard with one mode.. If this was touted as a different game with pve and pvp and other mechanics similar to destiny it would fare better

I honestly can't wait til season 2, it's going to be so freaking wild to see what happens

I'll do a final recap in the next hour when it finalizes, but it's 9:30 pm right now and it still hasnt broke 10k.

It will though. But barely. It'll end probably about 10.5k-ish.

Peaked at 10.3k. A new low. Looks like it survived above 10k after all
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Today's peak at 10.3k is -78k or -88%

Today vs yesterday: 10.3k vs 11k (-0.7k or -6%)

Yesterday's low 3k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 2.8k, but Mon late night holds up better than Sun. So it might still hold up at 3k+

Mon vs Mon: 10.3k vs 11.8k (-1.5k or -13%). Trending lately is about -10 to -15% since early May

Ratio method to estimate peaks and valleys
Mon-Thur 3.3:1. For example, a peak of 12k will have a low of 3.6k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

Steam Rankings
Daily Active Users: 168

That really was a bad day. 6.6K CCU average. ~80k DAU.

We ain't at the bottom yet.

Some games making about the same revenue on Steam as Marathon right now with 9,600 CCU and peak players much higher.

Sea Power: Naval whatever.... 427 CCU
Futa Fucks Femboys with 99 CCU
Smalland whatever 704 CCU
SOMA 144 CCU
A Euro Truck Sim 2 DLC. The original game came out in 2012

We came so close to sub-10K.
It's possible today. But an outlier.

Aside from big patch day, Tuesdays have a +/- range of handful of %. History shows Tuesdays have gone down 3-5% which would break under 10k since yesterday was 10.3k. But it also shows it might go up a handful of % too which could make it 10.5k.

Safe bet is 10-10.5k, with outside chance of being beyond the high and low range.

I just want to say how fucking unhinged it has gotten over at the CCU thread on purple place.

Extremely emotional Marathon enjoyers over there are insisting people verbally admit they cannot predict the future and should not make any sort of projections in a sales thread.

Because future foresight is impossible. Literally. Thus sales projection are inherently flawed and shouldn't happen?

...... this fucking game has broken people.

Omega game indeed and the gift that keeps on giving.

Well shit... If we can't make predictions about anything based on data, we better stop using planes.

LOL. Doesn't seem to hard to me. Some of my predictions just skimming data and using Google calculator to do the math has been fun and easy.

Just about anyone whose made estimates in this thread have been accurate probably within 5% variance which is amazing.

But marathon makes it easy with its predictable slow bleed. No advanced regression analysis tools needed except google calculator.

Hey, I think Marathon is number 2 now on steamdb behind Horizon(the racer). Not sure how to check that but when I look at what's popular today it's the first time Marathon is not at the time.

Apathy is setting in.

What are you referring to here with #2?

As of right this moment it's 167th on CCU (which is will probably move up a bit in the next few hours since it's a pretty US heavy game)

Steamdb itself, which tracks the ccu, keeps track of which game on steamdb is most popular day to day(as in people looking at its metadata on steamdb, NOT people actually playing Marathon). Marathon has been number 1 for a while. Some of the fans implied that this interest was a good sign for the game and keeping the game from achieving apathy from the gaming community at large.

The game falling from top position indicates the community may even be moving on from CCU discussions(they aren't, they will ramp back up once they get interesting) but still I do believe it is now second on steamdb.

Ah I see what you are talking about.

Yeah makes sense it was the most hate-watched game lol

As an eurobro, dont sell euro truck sim short, its a timeless classic, like many other sim games here :p

Played a bunch of Euro Truck in my late high school years. My friends would ask me "why the hell are you playing this?, and it soon became "why the hell am i playing this?"

The PvE mode is a bad idea.

It will be slapdash and give the haters what they wanted. It will also be probably like a temporary experimental queue and only last for a short time so promising it instead of shadow-dropping it is going to leave some fans disappointed it isn't there on day 1.

If they can slap together a strike out of what they have now, in a month, then it just goes to show that the original direction of the game was a mistake. It should have been more PvE focused and it would have been a lot more popular.

If they want PvE, there's a Bungie ip for that. Why play a half baked version shoehorned into a game that never intended/planned to implement it in the 1st place?

Although the same can be said for Fortnite, but in reverse with BR implemented into a game that was meant to be PvE. That became wildly successful, but I don't see that working here.
Stranger things have happened though

There could be another issue.

People playing PVE to farm keys, or whatever the fuck they farm in this fucking game, leaving the PVP/matchmaking in an even worse state.

For all intent and purposes the game is done, it's only a question for how long will Sony keep it alive. Throwing the kitchen sink at it is just going to confuse and thin the already thin player base IMO.

Wow, pretty soon it may overtake Forza Horizon 5!!

Hmm massive increase today to the point where it is actually up week over week despite a fairly minor patch, very weird behaviour. If this continues we could see the first week over week increase Marathon has ever had.

As interest stirs in the prepatch and S2 coming up some people will likely come back. That doesn't necessarily mean that the bleed isn't still going on in the background.

I don't think Bungie cares at this point. Adding PvE after explicitly telling PvE players to fuck off is basically them raising the white flag. Marathon as it was intended failed, time to just throw whatever out there and hope something sticks.

So season 2 starts June 2. They'll want to avoid any terrible news around notE3 or the few weeks after. A season usually lasts 3 months in these GaaS games? So probably the next comment we hear from Sony leadership about the game would be no sooner than early September?

It's not a good look. To think that whatever they scrabble together will be game's biggest hope.

They should do a documentary about Marathon.

They should do a documentary about Marathon.

Best you are going to get is the typical Jason Shreier article that boils down to:

"Devs had to work an extra hour on a Thursdays and were burned out" and "Managers sucked at Project Management Software and Timetables" and "Upper Management were meanie jerkface heads to rank and file".
