Mortal Kombat 2 trailer new

I actually loved the first half of this movie because it basically goes straight into the tournament once its done introducing new characters. I haven't played MKII in like 20+ years but seeing some stages recreated in live-action was a rush of nostalgia. The Dead Pool scene was awesome, especially because it killed off that shitty OC from the first movie.

As for the second half of the movie... once the movie introduces the pendant, the plot becomes a lot less interesting in my opinion. The tournament scenes are still good but the detour to find the pendant where they recruit the help of a silly Marvelesque Baraka was a bit much for me. Also the finale girlbosses a little too hard... I'd elaborate but I'm sure there will be many reasonable and measured discussions about that in the days to come.

So yeah overall I think it's pretty good but I wasn't crazy about the second half. Still, it's much better than the first movie.

Also Ed Boon makes a neat cameo

The pendant makes Shao Khan look like a bitch.

he would have been killed by Cole, Sonya and Lui Kang (Lui Kang alone killed him like 4 times) if not for it. Makes him look like a weakling rather than some big boss that he should be.

Light spoiler question

Did i miss how Kitaras mom died? She kneels in the beginning, then next you really see her she is a zombie fighting Sonja.

Liu Kang got done dirty, alls I'm saying.
I don't know, I think they made him pretty cool, and
he's clearly coming back for the third one.

Shao Kahn is the only person who was done dirty I think, he was jobbered by several people in this flick lol. Thank goodness for God mode cheats ;)

To answer the question, it wasn't shown, nobody knows.

Truthfully I'm more interested in Street Fighter, I was never really into Mortal Kombat. I always prefered the character designs and tone to Mortal Kombat

I'm gonna to wait for this sequel to come to streaming/VOD so I can watch all the movies back to back (Yes I'm including the 90s films too)

Questions: How does the film handle the return of the deceased characters from the first film? Kung Lao is a "revenant," I've read. I'm unfamiliar with this concept in MK - I checked out of the games after no. 3 (I'm old), so educate me if this is a thing brought over to the films. How is Kano back? Same thing? Does Goro return? He was wasted in the first one.

yea they never explain how she died the first time. I think the writers just looked over her bio and saw her character is that she's already a dead mind controlled character and just threw her in as that[/ISPOILER]

Quan Chi resurrects them both. Only Kung Lao is brought back as revenant. There's some silly passing comment about not making Kano a revenant because he wasn't important enough for them to bother putting in the effort.

Who would be the boss of the 3rd?

Yeah it sucks they didn't utilize Shang Tsung. He was pointless in this movie.
Creators have said "they have a plan for Shinnok", so he's definitely in the pipeline.
They also said Shang Tsung will have a much bigger part in the 3rd movie. He may be the main villain of that one.

Onaga and Kronika will probably be used at some point too. I can't imagine them trying to do Blaze.

I really hope you're wrong about Onaga and Kronika, these films will not benefit from D list villains like that, and they're only planning a trilogy, so I don't see why they'd need more than Shinnok and maybe Kintaro and Motaro. Maaaaayyyyybbbeee Tanya if we're just desperate for villains, but I don't see a need for Onaga or Kronika at all.

Joe Taslim is contracted for 5 Mortal Kombat movies. I think, depending on success, they're planning on going the full length with this franchise.

They're even toying with the idea of spin-off movies. Like Shaolin Monks and Special Forces.

Oh shit, I kept seeing trilogy and figured that's all we're getting, so egg on my face.

In that case, yeah, we're almost certainly getting Onaga and Kronika....what a shame :/. I simply don't see a way to make them cool in a film.

Maybe Kronika, somehow, with really good casting, but absolutely not Onaga. That is gonna be corny as hell lol, but I'll be thrilled to be wrong.

Well, with three more films, we'll almost certainly get Kintaro and Motaro at some point, so that's good. Maybe Drahmin and the other fella, Molok?, whatever his name was, they'll probably show up as minions at some point, so that'll be cool.

I think Devorah and Kotal Kahn could translate well to film, hoping to see them make it at some point.

Fuck yeah, Kotal is my favourite of the reboot era. I hope he gets a satisfying adaptation.

MKX introduced a bunch of great characters.

I think MKX was the high mark of the series in terms of narration, vibe, art style, though not necessarily execution, but yeah, MK X is fucking great and I don't know why it isn't one of the more hallowed MK titles for most MK fans. Incredible roster too, one of the most interesting in fighting game history in my opinion.

Agreed. If it had MK11's beautiful fight choreography and ditched the QTE then it'd take the cake as the best Story Mode in the franchise for me.

the movie was entertaining but still not "good" imo. The 1995 film is maybe a bit corny but it's great. It feels tangible, the characters are believable, and the deaths feel consequential.

This film and its predecessor don't feel tangible. You always feel like you're on a movie set. The characters have no real pathos. Characters are slaughtered but nothing feels dangerous.

That said, this film just barely squeaks by on reverence for the series and some decent action choreography. I enjoyed my time with it and will give the next one a chance as well.

They might have cut it for time

For me I thoroughly enjoyed Johnny Cage, l am fan Karl Urban & he nail it as a washed up Cage

Saw it tonight. better than Mortal Kombat 2021? yes, but that is not really saying a lot given how many opportunities that movie wasted. It is amazing how much of that first movie was erased with Mortal Kombat II. I mean, just flat out 'erased'. By that, yeah I mean Cole Young. Mortal Kombat '21 is like the Street Fighter 1 (the original 1987 game, I mean) of fighting game movies. Mortal Kombat II literally is: "Fuck it, clean slate". With the exception a a few necromanced characters..

But with that said, I am still disappointed that they wasted Goro in the original movie without even a hint that he was not dead and could return in MKII. I'd be happy with a Sheeva substitute to replace Goro. he would have been a much better movie in this sequel if they shifted a few plot points around. My biggest complaint is really the slight over exposition on random things. It felt like I was listening to someone spout off a Wikipedia article. I can get the exposition being there the odd time.

The last Mortal Kombat that I really put any time in was MKX. With some MK11. At no point did I feel lost with anything. I mean, some of the plot points felt a little rushed in. I was honestly surprised to see Shang Tsung just chilling in the background doing nothing for the majority of the movie and he just shows up in the third act. Clearly the director is saving him for a potential part three.

Karl Urban is alright as Cage, To be honest, he had the least stifled dialogue. A lot of character again, just speak in too much exposition. Weirdly Baraka was one of the better moments. Unexpected. really the third time Quan Chi appeared in a live action Mortal Kombat production. The first time was the short lives live action TV series MK: Conquest. The second time was Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero, and now this is the live action version. Maybe one of the better characters. Kano added another comedic layer to Johnny Cage.

The soundtrack wasn't particularly memorable, It's alright and trying to go more theatrical. Glad I can say that I saw it. In all fairness, I still prefer the 1995 movie... because of course I do.

Woketards and Hollywood morons have made everything so fucking boring and generic. You can even see from a mile away when they're trying to be edgy even though they're really, really bad at it now

The movie just wasn't fun, mostly because none of the characters were really likeable or charismatic, even the actors I really like, like Karl Urban or Hiroyuki Sanada seemed kind of dull in this. It felt like a Marvel movie that was trying too hard to be edgy with excessive CGI violence

I've been watching recent interviews with the original cast of the 1995 film - Robin Shou and Linden Ashby and it's been really heartwarming for me. These guys have great chemistry together after all this time and I must have watched that movie 30 times so it's great to see.

Pretty easy to find on YouTube. The new films are cool but that original really was special.

I feel like this, Street Fighter movie, and Resident Evil are all looking fun. Never thought so many game movies would be worth watching at the movies in the same year.

I was there yesterday and… well. I'll generously give it a 6/10. Sub-Zero was a disappointment, where was my damn ice? I didn't want Noob Saibot. And Jade? Omg, what a miscast. She looked like that bald goblin from the new Naughty Dog game.

Sub-Zero was a disappointment
no he was dead, what did you expect? bi han always dies and becomes noob; there's not going to be another sub-zero until another ninja takes up the mantle, last thing this movie needed was slogging the pace down with another origin story for sub-zero #2

Forgive me, i'm not that deep into MK lore. Sub-Zero is my favorite fighter and when I heard the name, i was just really excited to see my Ice Man.

I can't WAIT for the Arrow 4K of the 1995 Mortal Kombat. Such a fun film. Still the best Shang Tsung. And the Scorpion/Cage fight is one of my all-time faves, wonky-ass CGI and all.

1995 cgi was a bit wonky now. And no special fancy moves cgi like the new movie but it was like an actual movie.

After MK III comes out. Maybe someone can cut/splice all 3 together into one cohesive movie.

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa just owned that role. Took it as seriously as anyone could, for a movie based on a game. And then seeing and hearing him in MK11 -- that was so cool.

I saw this the other day, it's not amazing but I thought it was cheesy fun, which is what you want from an MK film. I liked how they worked some of the game's stages into the film.

Went yesterday, its fun and to the point. Maybe wished for some different characters. Urban is too old for Cage.

Well this was certainly an improvement over the last one. I think it helps a Mortal Kombat movie feel like Mortal Kombat when it has....Mortal Kombat in it? As in, the tournament that the game is named after? It feels like they had a lot more fun with this one. It's still not quite as charming as the 1995 movie, but it's a step in the right direction tone-wise. Kano is the best thing in either film.

I hope they find a new director if they decided to do another one.

I just don't think the guy has the fire for this movie. It seems like most of the improvements were mandates that came from Ed Boon and the fans essentially.

And there were a lot of improvements but the directing style is still a bit too hokey. Yes, Mk does have a strong tongue-in-cheek element but there is a lot of unnecessary cheese here as well. Such as all three good guys using their powers together to defeat the enemy - stuff like that is just so cheesy to me. It feels very Disney or "Spy Kids" to me.

Then just odd shots like when Johnny cage is fighting Baraka and flailing his arms around. I don't know what to make of shots like that but they aren't the type of style I want from MK.

I don't think the casting is bad and I thought the choreography was pretty good but we need a new writer and director imo. I'd love for the Safdie brothers to do it but that'll never happen unless they somehow grew up obsessed with MK or something. They'd balance the tension, pace, and comedy perfectly if given the chance.

Even in press interviews the current director just seems sort of lost.

It was fun enough. Can Kano's potty mouth save a film? Fight choreography seemed to be trying and had some cool moments, but still not really hitting the mark, typical Hollywood coverage + editing shooting without enough prep.

It's kind of a bait and switch, too. Karl Urban has top billing but he's actually more of a supporting character. Kitana is the actual protagonist, and unfortunately the lady playing her is a terrible wooden actress. The bald lady from Neil's Intergalactic is even worse, scowling and strutting around laughably as Kitana's lesbian romantic interest. Why is this the focal point? Karl Urban seemed sedated too for that matter.

Nice to see Ed Boon in there though.

I got around to seeing this last night, as it is now on HBO Max.

There's a bit in The Departed in which Ray Winstone's Mr. French interrupts a fistfight started by Billy Costigan and proclaims, "There are guys you can hit...and guys you can't. Now, that isn't quite a guy you can't hit, but he's almost a guy you can't hit."

To paraphrase, "There are movies as terrible as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation...and movies not as terrible as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Now, Mortal Kombat II isn't quite as terrible as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, but it's almost as terrible as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation."

This (adapting Mortal Kombat to film) should not be complicated. It's Enter the Dragon with magic. How do you fuck that up? The '95 movie is goofy at times, sure, but it entertains and the comedy isn't overbearing.

The crew behind the 2021 reboot and this (the sequel) really seem to have nothing of value to contribute with the exception of exploring the Sub-Zero/Scorpion relationship.

In regard to the 2021 film, Shang Tsung is permitted to preemptively murder potential tournament combatants in a world of realms governed by strict archaic rules and, then...there is no tournament. There was a lot of nonsense put into justifying the Cole Young character ("We preferred to have a non-white lead in an Asian-rooted fantasy") when the collection of characters includes...Liu fucking Kang - who is the obvious protagonist or should be. Goro gets killed in a stupid Earth realm skirmish (you know: the Shokan prince and 9-time champion, so obviously expendable), the film spends too much time trying to explain the super-powers, and it kills Kung Lao most likely because it doesn't introduce any other fodder for fatalities and painted itself into a corner ("Well, we have to kill one of the good guys...").

Jump to the sequel: The fans didn't like a lot of the aforementioned stuff, so...let's have them dictate what the film should be (fantastic idea!). Cole's death is laugh-out-loud funny. It's comedically over-the-top; this guy was the hero in the first film. More on this in a bit. It's almost as bad as what they did to Johnny Cage at the start of Annihilation - at least Linden Ashby got out of that one. I could be wrong, but it looked like they CG'd Lewis Tan's head onto some other person's body in some scenes. They really did him dirty and I don't envy his probable contractual-requirement to return in this film.

So, with that said, enter: Johnny Cage. Hey, fans: This is what you wanted! Save: Cage is a goof in this. He's mostly irrelevant and serves as comic foil to the seriousness of the tournament - which, admittedly, is actually in this movie. Karl Urban is great and he works with what he's given, here, but the character is a sideshow. Oh, he's fighting Baraka (also irrelevant) now because...why not?

As to the tournament: What a piss-poor way to manifest it. There are floating thingamajigs in the sky to keep score and contestants are simply warped to wherever the fight is to take place. Cole's head was just pulverized with a sledgehammer. The Good Guys: "Oh no. We know he's dead because a floating thing in the sky is no longer illuminated."

Moving on: Katana. Sorry: Kitana (not the sword...I always fuck that up). She's the center of this story. Ok, cool. Problem is: This is a video game movie and no one really spent any time enriching the character to the point she's more interesting than Johhny Cage. So, this is consequently two not-so-great movies. One: A story of revenge and justice ultimately being served as a despot is killed by the one he wronged. And, two: Funny fish-out-of-water guy commentates as the other heroes are potentially dispatched and no one seems to really care. I hope Mehcad Brooks learned a lesson in regard to being difficult on set.

Alright, I think I'm done. There are other criticisms to express (Raiden has no personality, the revenant stuff is essentially a cheat for retconning the deaths of characters in part one, Liu Kang empathizes with revenant Kung Lao...and then ends their confrontation by eviscerating him ("Sorry, bro...you're awesome and all, but I'm gonna slam you on your circular saw hat. Your guts are gonna get ripped out and you'll get the chance to sniff the contents of your lower intestines as you're turned into sausage, but we're still good, yo."). I don't have the energy to elaborate.

I watched the '95 movie immediately after this. It's PG13 and has greater stakes/better fights/more impactful deaths.

Watched this last night and was surprised how good it was.

Yeah it's a little cheesy, but it doesn't waste your time. It gets straight into the meat of being a Mortal Kombat movie quickly, and it really respects the source material (Looking at you Resident Evil movies).

It is straight up a Mortal Kombat movie, and for better or worse it is more authentic to the games than the 1995 classic.

The fights are solid and gruesome. A lot of the moves are lifted straight from the games as well as stages. Certain characters definitely steal the show.

Definitely one of the better video game movies ever made.

Was an absolute piece of garbage.

I really enjoy watching Karl Urban on screen, but this was one of the worst casting decisions I've ever seen and it felt like he was sleepwalking through it.

The characters were flat and boring. The very minimum of any sort of characterization with the exception of Kano. He was the highlight of the movie AGAIN.

There were no stakes in any of the fights, because you already knew the outcome for most of them. The big surprise was Jax being killed. Hell, they even brought Sindell back after being KIA for 20 minutes.

That's another thing. If they just bring back characters as soon as they are killed, what's the point? The entire aura that Scorpion had was he was the only one who escaped hell, and that was because of his vengeance.

How can they keep failing in such a basic concept? The goddamn story is already there, just make Lui Kang the incorruptible but badass hero, Johnny Cage the sarcastic sidekick with hidden depths, and Shang Tsung the charismatic but ruthless villain! Oh wait, they already did. It's called Mortal Kombat (1995).

Also, this guy is a moron for getting his hopes up:
I'm feeling myself getting hyped for this one, especially since they are bringing back Kano. What's happening to my cynicism?

The pendant makes Shao Khan look like a bitch.

he would have been killed by Cole, Sonya and Lui Kang (Lui Kang alone killed him like 4 times) if not for it. Makes him look like a weakling rather than some big boss that he should be.
Yeah, this may be the weakest iteration of Shao Khan I've seen.

May, because you don't know if its just arrogance due to the pendant. He basically dropped every guard and stupidly began to toy with everyone, taking mortal wounds for fun.

Personally, deeply flawed movie. Better than Annihilation or the previous film and I very much enjoyed parts of it, but doesn't touch the original Mortal Kombat movie. Badly cut too.

Damn, you know it's bad when people say it's slightly better than Annihilation. ;)

Tbh I don't have a big urge to watch it (and to rewatch the previous film) even now when it's in streaming. Rather rewatch the 1995 flick again.

The problem is that it doesn't feel like a tournament, this is just a disjointed series of fights strewn together.

The OG film is the only one that properly relayed the story of a tournament.

I disagree with some recent replies here at least up until the end-game where it becomes very boring.

This fight was fucking awesome and it's probably one of the best fights in the whole MK movie universe.

Of course theres nothing else just as good in the movie, but it was pretty decent overall. Ending was rushed clearly from a CGI pov and writing, but I think the movie did fine, and hopefully the third part will be the highlight.

Top Bottom
