Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

The funny thing about that chart I posted is the sales revenue of games at about 200th place must be so low the copies sold and mtx are practically zero.

You can tell since look at all the games in the list. Look at the green column. That's the number of people playing online when I took the snapshot. I dont think games are selling a lot of $$$ if the player count is literally 50 or 140 people. Even looking at it from a 24 hour range, their CCU is still terribly low.

That means whatever sales Marathon is getting despite having 12,400 people online must be so low they arent selling new copies and whomever is playing it isnt buying mtx.

So even games like COD AW at 45 gamers, Subway Sim 2 at 57 gamers, and their incredibly low 24H CCU is still generating more $$$ than Marathon gamers which range from 4,000 - 15,000 daily gamers.
Which is really bad considering Marathon has live operations and server/infrastructure costs on top of the exorbitant development and marketing budgets.

10 pm completed hour CCU. Peaked a touch higher at 15.4k today
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Today's peak at 15.4k is -72.9k or -83%

Today vs yesterday: 15.4k vs 15.2k (+0.2k or +1%)

Yesterday's low 4.4k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 4.5k

Fri vs Fri: 15.4k vs 17.1k (-1.7k or -10%). Much better than the historic changes of -20%

Ratio method to estimate peaks and valleys
Mon-Thur 3.3:1. For example, a peak of 15k will have a low of 4.5k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

Its like.... Who is playing this shit, right? it's not even available on steam anymore ... Bungie is doing the same, they are boosting it's CCU one way or another.
Boosting it with 3 players?

You could try loading into match of Marathon: it will work and you will encounter actual players.

But we all know you don't own the game, never played it and never will.

Paul "Marathon Slayer" Tassi still hard at work fending off morons.

It's like watching a snake eating its own tail...lol
Not a fan of Tassi, but if he didn't say something about the game's dying trend and people got burned for buying it shortly before it got murdered, he'd get crucified for that too.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

You can find a group of people playing literally anything. There is a discord for people who enjoy Redfall

There is some weird political undertone to all this. They are treating him as if he were a progressive journalist who suddenly had a change of heart and started posting statistics on migrant crime. Even using the same labels like 'grifter'.

If you don't like something, just look away and it doesn't exist. It's the same thought process these people apply to everything in their lives.

400Million loss at Concord and FireWalk Studio
?????? Buy Heaven Studio and FAILGame
800 million loss at Bungie 3,7Bi costs

What more money they has to lose to wake up to the reality?

The truth hurts, which is basically what he's reporting on.

We seem to be in some weird era where the truth is no longer *allowed* to hurt and instead silence must be given, or some kind of ill founded "look on the bright side of life instead" for....what, exactly? Save hurt feelings?

Saw the same thing with Highguard, too.

What a wild time.

This is fucking sad.

The denial of reality and the emotional attachment to a game is serious mental illness

What the fuck.

The numbers are the numbers.
I blame the live service model. When the game you enjoy needs X players to keep on existing, it can create this kind of unhealthy behaviour

Giving people the information necessary to judge for themselves if they are about to waste their money on a dying MP game seems like a public service rather than a bad thing.

On balance I expect the 'negative' (really just accurate) commentary is a net benefit to the game, as proving the detractors wrong gives some a motivation to keep playing which the game itself is unable to provide.

As I posted earlier in the thread: if they are serious about being committed to supporting the game for years no matter what happens, there is nothing stopping them offering a eg. 12 month money back guarantee on game purchase and mtx purchase (in the event the game ceases operation within that period from purchase), which would alleviate the concerns highlighted above. If those concerns about the game being at death's door are indeed the thing preventing people buying the game.

Live service isn't the problem… The problem is the need to feminize everything. Sony can't even make a single player game without a lesbian lead…. Watch Intergalactic flop…

Dont think it would work as these worries are more a result of "fangirling" over the game and time investment than simply money.

Besides, i highly doubt any company would offer such a 12 month money back guarantee for both game and mtxs. If they did, they'd simply keep the game on life support for the year then shut it down if it proved inneffective.

The people who already like this, like it despite any lesbian or feminization thing.

I'm specifically talking about this unhealthy obsession with antagonizing any critics or burying their heads in the sand over the game's obvious issues. No matter how crap or unpopular something like Dustborn or Veilguard are, fans of those games can keep playing them without much worry over how they're perceived, cause lack of players wont cause them to vanish.

I doubt they would offer it because I don't believe for a second they are serious about supporting it for years no matter what. Actually I think they are full of shit and any concerns people have about investing into it at this point are 100% justified.

Howwweverrr, on the remote possibility they are as seriously committed as they say, such a policy would cost them nothing. And as you say, worst case scenario they would only have to life support it until the clock runs out.

I agree. Gone are the days of offline modes, a smattering of dedicated players still around online; hell, a lot of games of yesteryear had private servers recreated for them(Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast, for example).

Live service whether you like the game or not, it just dies and ceases to exist. Even attempts at the aforementioned servers get C&D'd. Sucks.

I think this is a bad take because a scaled down Bungie is still enormous (800 people?)

For comparison Double Fine supposedly has only 42 employees and they release things pretty regularly
Did they release anything after psychonauts 2? And even then, cant compare their kinds of games to major live service projects

F2P weekend at the start of every season would be way more effective.

Advocates for toxic positivity.

Say what you want as long as it's nice and no one takes offense. Dunno what will be offensive? Best be cautious then and say nothing unless it's full on praise.
It's honestly appalling that there are people out there that advocate for obscuring information to protect their favourite media. The games industry is already weird with how limited the information about business performance is. I wish we could get movie box office level detail on every game sold just to watch how people like the ones replying to Tassi react.

So using the achievements, we're looking at ~50 hours being 7 capstone upgrades and level 90+ being 100 hours.

It's interesting that they're using % here because it avoids using actual numbers and hides away the low sales of the game. We know that this pretty much only sold to sweats, so claims of high % means shit when your player base total is tiny. There's a certain someone who likes to make long posts of game comparisons who I also notice uses % to hide away the numbers. 80% drop in user base is typical right, but when one game starts at 500k CCU and the other at 80K those drops don't tell the full story.

This makes sense as I've heard almost nothing but positive things about the game itself. It's just hard to convince people to get into yet another live service game, especially one that costs money up front.
