Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

Did the game just plateaued at 13k on a Friday?

Dude, the creators said that the Matrix is an metaphor to their gender disphoria. It was one hell of an revisionism that only idiots bought it. They never, ever said something close to that in old interviews, just recently, because of Matrix 4, that piece of trash. I mean, they can say whatever they want about Matrix 2 or 3, these movies are mid at best, but leave the original Matrix out of it.
That's funny af, because that was exactly my counter argument to him. That it was revisionist BS that the OG movie never once hinted at.
It was kinda like JK Rowling coming out (lol) with Dumbledore being gay only after the books/movies were out.

It's whatever, because for me, the Matrix 4 never existed. M2 and M3 never surpassed the OG and was totally unnecessary other than hot af Monica Belluci, it wasn't worth watching.

I actually love the game - but really only play solo and yeah the game gets harder and harder to play as the season progresses. There really needs to be some sort of casual/pve mode for this to get a larger audience imo

For example pve mode with limited amount of rewards. Say you get less experience, less valuable loot and some materialis not even available. But every map is playable etc

It's so damn insane to think how real a fucking ass retarded game/company IS the representation of everything wrong in the industry across the board:

Creative bankruptcy
Chasing GaaS trends
DEI/Wokeness
Bloated and inefficient production
Hubris/ taking the consumer for granted.

Already, Marathon´s failure (and discourse) should´ve sent a clear and strong message to Sony (but we know it wouldn't be enough)....Bungie needs to die.
LMAO HYPOCRITS .. leaving arc raiders ccu thread open though?

Even if the game dies and gets abandoned and Sony stops chasing trends and GAAS, they will only make more single player blunders like Nu-GOW, Gran Turismo without PS1 career mode, etc...

So what kind of flop do you guys prefer?

Do you like a Concord style flop, where it just crashes and burns spectacularly right out of the gate?

Or do you prefer a Marathon style flop where it suffers a slow agonizing decline into oblivion?

Sometimes I'm in the mood for long open world JRPGs and sometimes I prefer to play quick arcades.

I think it's the same with flops.

Dat title change!

Damn, also whatever happened to our sponsor?

Should we let our sponsor know the steam user review drops every day?

We are getting closer to the dream of the Omega Game Marathon being merely "Mostly Positive".

4 points away in fact.

Hard to say but I think the slow agonizing death spiral of Marathon has been some of the best entertainment in life, I'm 47 and this thread makes me feel 27 again giving me a zest for life daily!

That's honestly a difficult question to answer.

Concord was great because of the immediate schadenfreude and the fact that is a historical flop.

As for Marathon, it's really funny observing the shills doing all they can to co-opt the discussion in non-OT threads and show how they are having the blastiest of blasts that have ever blasted. But we know and they know that this game is a flop. Not to mention we got this gem of a crash out.

Whichever convinces Sony to turn away from GaaS and go back to making halo-tier single-player games. That's what I want from them.

It's hard trying to figure out what's happening with this game. On one hand I see this thread constantly saying it's dead, but I log in and find games quickly. Biggie hasn't pulled the plug yet, if ever. So not sure how much time to invest more into it. Especially when there is 0 road map. This game is so weird.

I played that vampire bloodlines game and it had like less than 500 players concurrent. I could find matches all the time and barely needed to wait.

There's over 400 Bungie employees making Marathon now, up from 300 before launch.

This thread is not a great place to get an accurate understanding on anything GAAS related. Marathon isn't going anywhere.

Have you ever noticed anything interesting about the art style and tone of the majority of today's single player games? Now compare that to the art styles of single player games from 30 years ago.

variety is the spice of life.

We got both just this year (high guard), we are blessed.

If you enjoy the game, then binge it for all it's worth. It doesn't seem like anyone needs to spend a lot of money on it to get the fun, so there's no reason not to go all-in with your time if it's for you.

I think the CCU and discussion around the success or failure from a business angle is relevant when we think about future support and if/when they start inviting players to spend a lot of money on additional content. My concern as an outsider would be someone dropping a lot of money on microtransactions only to have Sony pull the plug in a few months. I doubt Sony would refund people for content they purchased more than 90 days ago.

I still think the most likely future for this game is development stopped and it just sits in maintenance mode for a long time. I don't think they will kill it like they did Concord. Players who are enjoying it will probably be able to keep enjoying it for a long while.

Really what this microscope on the CCU says to me is how far this game is from the general expectations of a studio like Bungie under a parent like PlayStation. I'm not surprised by the numbers - I'm surprised PlayStation didn't see this coming and swerve to avoid it.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Maybe I'm dumb...?

I would think more games being made with fewer engines, and games being made to run across multiple platforms would reduce some of the uniqueness we saw back in the PS1 and N64 days.

Just a matter of time before Bungo comes crawling on theire knees: lOok aT OuR nEW Pve UpDate, iTs tHe beSteSt PvE ShiT eVer DoNe, pLeAse PlAy aNd StaP bEiNg mEan To uS

It has nothing to do with engines and everything to do with (aging) demographics.

It's going to be equally funny that all the people who said Marathon doesn't need PVE elements and Bungie is great for sticking to their vision will do a complete fucking 180 to praise them for adding in PVE. "Well we all knew it was lacking a PVE element"

Did "we" all know that, all along?

Oh, sure. But "the kids" have already found their GaaS games and they're not budging. My son is 14. He plays Fortnite and Roblox. His mind is not open to playing anything else. His PS5 has sat gathering dust since I built his PC.

Not to mention those kids aren't in a position to buy hardware in the current economy, or the near future economy (next 5-7 years).

Yes, Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials may not be an expanding pool, but it's the pool that can afford to buy hardware and games. So they need to cater to what these players want. They clearly don't want a dozen different GaaS shooters.

Kids are naturally open to new experiences. They're much more likely to try a new social GAAS game than anything that resembles what their parents played as kids

You are running into the problem of hit rate matering. If games are platforms, then they're naturally going to hit less than short experiences designed to be finished in a couple of weeks.

There are 7 oceans on planet earth and millions of puddles. Most of earth's water resides in the oceans.

Kids will always be the primary economic driver of the games industry. Parents buy what their kids want to play and drastically reduce their own game time once they have families.

It's not just this. It's that they're a soon to be shrinking pool. If you were 18 and played Mario Bros 3 in 1988, you're 56 today. That conveyor belt feeds into a furnace.

The new generation, the 8 year olds that get into games every year, are playing Live Service games. That's an expanding market.

Asha Sharma just said last week that Xboxs new north star was DAU. Asha Sharma reads the same market that Herman Hulst and Andrew Wilson read. Y'all have said that the Live Service push was over for the last 3 years. Every Live Service failure is evidence that the industry is going back to 2013. You guys play the tragic figure in a Shakespeare play.
