Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

Marathon belivers right now

This dropped below Hunt - Showdown without even slowing down.
Ouch, this might not be "niche but sustainable" after all like I initally thought.
This starts to look like the next shutdown-candidate.

I wonder if in the same blogpost announcing the close of Marathon they will also say that they gonna start to punish CCU chuds with 30 days online check just as a payback.

I think Marathon is in maintenance for another 30min. Looking forward to the numbers for the rest of the day going up against Arc Raiders Riven Tides update.

Years? Can they get to the end of this year?
Maybe I'm crazy but I have a feeling they'll ride it out this year and then take it off-line next year.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if they do it this year. They have more people working on this project than Destiny, but this game has less players than Destiny.

The bolded is honestly the HUGE issue that most aren't talking about in general. This game is supposed to be scaling up across the board. Not dying and doing worse than Destiny. I just can't see how they can keep selling this game on the market after GTA6 comes out. Especially once GTA6's online is released.

It just has to go F2P.

Looks like they buffed the shottie after the debuff.

  • WSTR Combat Shotgun
  • ➡️Increased damage from 78 to 85.
  • ➡️Reduced critical multiplier from 1.15x to 1.05x.
  • ➡️Slightly reduced the rate at which damage falls off.
  • ➡️Added 75% damage bonus against AI targets.

Aside from Marathon debate, I do think PvP only games should have to publish/display their online players to let customers know whether its worth buying

Unless the anticipated profits from going f2p can't justify the upkeep costs

They would need to go f2p but also need to do something dramatic in the way that they are managing this game when it comes to scaling down

I noticed that too reading the notes in the OT thread. So shotguns were OP, then nerfed, now buffed up again? lol

No doubt Bungie frantically following gamers sentiment. You probably had the casuals first complaining top gamers curb stomping, they changed it and those core gamers complained it's too weak. So to get back core gamers they buffed it again.

None of those changes are meaningful enough to draw new players, bring back old players or even stop the bleeding is my guess.

After all that experience with D2 where shotguns was the meta for a very long time in many of their maps, they didn't learn a damn thing.

Yesterday's low 4.9k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 4.4k. But Sun nights drop harder than usual, so tonight might hold around 4.5 - 4.9k despite lower peak CCU
Just as I thought!

It's early but some oddly low numbers coming out of server down hours. It might be a trainwreck day or perhaps it rebounds hard to have normal trending CCU, which for Tuesdays is about flat CCU as gamers want to test the tweaks (excluding big patch day which was +16%).

Completed 12 pm hour 8.8k. Last week same time on server day was 10.9k.

So right off the bat coming out of maintenance hours, it is down -2.1k or -19%.

I don't understand you people, because personally I LOVE Marathon. Running 5km with ridiculously fast people was one of my favorite childhood memories before my relgiously insane country shut it down. Idk about this fucking game tho.

But is PC > PS + Xbox?

[Forbes] Steam is 70% of Marathon's population PS5 is 19%, Xbox is 11%

"My own sources at Bungie have now confirmed to me that these numbers are very close to the real figures, meaning they shouldn't be rejected out of hand."
Those are similar to Taul's early findings based on his internal sources. Honestly if anything I would think it is even higher than 70% now since this is such a PC focused game and console interest just died so quick.

This is a nightmare. There's 10,000 people playing Marathon on PC right now and about 3,000 on PS5 and Xbox combined..... 13K isn't going to cut it. Feels like this game would need around 50K or so to be playing it at any giving time, considering it cost $200M to make.

I'm actually looking forward to season 2. Supposedly they have almost all of bungie on it. However, from the output on Destiny 2 and how anemic Marathon released, I don't expect much.

lol in all seriousness, yeah. We don't all hate Marathon, we just realize the history we are seeing made here. Frankly, it may be nothing short of the end of western development. Bungie feels old and incapable and honestly it feels like this should have been handed to a China hero project developer or someone like Pearl Abyss. The slowness and expensiveness of Bungie is really hurting the game. It HAS to be.

I find Xbox at 11% of total Marathon sales hard to believe. This game peaked at around #70 on Xbox charts in launch weeks. Then tailed off to 100+. Sales must be so low right from the start it should be a rounding error. I find it hard to believe based on those sales articles Xbox sales are estimated at around 120,000+ units. There is no way Xbox games ranked at 70-100+ are selling 120,000 units in a week or two when those articles came out. People brought up Skate 3 on 360 was ranked around Marathon. I dont think Skate 3 is selling that many weekly copies in 2026!

It's pretty clear they are putting all their bets on the june update. It have to be THE update, the one for the ages, to completely turn the boat around and make everyone eat their words. In reality it'll probably bring an boost of 5k players at best at this point. Talk about an critical error.

Are they even going to introduce a new map with the Season 2 update?
