Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

It's not built for free-to-play, they would need to radically change the store and find new things to sell, it won't work and I don't believe anyone at Bungie believes that either.

It's gonna get a big new season 2, some smaller updates throughout 2026 and then they will stop doing major updates and move everyone unto Destiny 3.

What Destiny 3? There's no evidence Bungie has even started work on Destiny 3 beyond very preliminary early development

Who knows if the leaks are real, but there is no other project that makes sense.

I think that studio is numbered unless they can convince Sony that Destiny 3 will make it worth it funding that giant studio. I see no reality where Destiny 3 is not their priority now that Marathon is struggling. There is no other avenue for them.

It's just funny how some people here (men in boxes) talk with such authority while being completely ignorant, when many of us predicted this time line. All these "fixes" keep hurting the game instead of improving it. Why? Because the game is fundamentally shit... As simple as that.

Looks like the Steam -20% sale worked a bit. Typical Tuesdays (excluding patch boost day at +16%) avgs about -3% vs Monday. It ended +2%, so it can be argued the sale was a +5% CCU effect. So about +1,000 CCU

10 pm completed hour CCU. Under 20k again at 19.8k
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Today's peak at 19.8k is -68.5k or -78%

Today vs yesterday: 19.8k vs 19.4k (+0.4k or +2%)

Yesterday's low 5.9k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 6k

Tue vs Tue: 19.8k vs 26.6k (-6.8k or -30%)

Second biggest week over week drop ever as last Tues was patch day. Worst is the second week of launch at -35%

Alternate method to estimate peaks and valleys (ballpark ratios)
On normal weekdays, 3.3:1. For example, a peak 20k will have a low of 6k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

Steam Rankings
Daily Active Users 97
Global Top Sellers 49 (-20% sale boost)
Weekly Top Sellers 81 ending Apr 21 (was 67 last week)
Top Rated Games 5,719 (84.31%)

So miniscule and likely short lived, but a sale is a sale and at least brings in fresh meat for the Marathon vets to chew up.

How long they stick around will be interesting...guessing a week more or less.

What's weird is the sale is on Steam and Xbox, but not PS. You'd think they'd do a blanket sale to boost users on all platforms.

Lol was just checking some ccus and pretty much every game is more than Marathon right now but man counter strike 2 is just nuts man, 637k... I never got into that series at all.. In 2000 I was glued to mmos so never got into original CS. But 637k for CS 2, that's insane

It's crazy to think that Bungie's bread and butter for so long came from D2. It afforded it to be the large scale develop it is/was. Just on Steam D2 held between 100k and 200k CCU for many years, barely falling below that number until last year, and presumably looking even more healthy on console.

Now we're in the era of Marathon which never even reached the highs of D2 lows, and couldn't even sustain that level for more than a few days. The difference between the two games now is barely a thing that on a zoomed out chart it appears that they're almost ready to touch.

The games are about ~35 chart places different in DAU. And I'm saying all this like D2 is in a healthy place and it's really not, the game is suffering badly.

This feels like comparing an AIDS and cancer patient and trying to figure out who's the healthy one.

Edit: Gonna add this chart as it shows how D2 post launch settled into that 100k CCU steady rhythm, and Marathon, well it just diarrhea'd its way out of the hole.

Having an entire economy around it helps a lot

80% of those are gamblers and bots farming cases

Its just not a fun game for most people, and that was pretty clear in the server-slam before all inbalances and shit was known. The ccu droped liked flyes on a paper without shit on it, and now people thinks that: Oh but if we give this shoogun 0.4 less dmg people will flock to this game.....No, this game needs a full fucking makeover to be something more than yesterdays news, well its not even that.

There's a weird elitism in Bungie that has affected Destiny too. They pour their resources into chasing streamers and raid level players rather than focussing on the millions that simply want to have fun.

Marathon is the epitome of this type of game design.

Bungie need to stop talking themselves so seriously.

It's impressive how bad the characters in this game look.

Its like they tried really hard to be as genderless, asexual and as less attractive as possible. As if somebody from Gaf who keep spaming "people just want to jerk off" was leading them.

Everyone already knows that for a characters in games and movies have to appeal to the public.
And it's not just about being sexy, as that can be a factor but not a requirement.
Characters have to be aspirational. They have to be cool. They have to look and act like the alter ego, we all wish we were.
So they can't be mundane, they can't look like losers. They can't look generic and low effort.

It's a chase of a bygone era wherein streamers or raid level players were, I guess, correlated to success of the game as far as enhancing sales or increasing exposure(rough example might be xQc in Overwatch heyday or Emongg)

The reality is, as you said, it's designed where that era is long gone.

We speak of sweats, toxicity and elitism as prevalent in games like this. The average age of a gamer now is 41(mid 30s in the US, some growth even in the 50s bracket).

These people, by and large, are *not* equipped nor willing to deal with those aforementioned things. They "outgrew" it and don't have time for it.

And that is a pretty massive audience to have on the outside looking in, if I'm honest.

The character designs are unbelievably rancid, some of the most tasteless and try-hard visuals I've ever seen. It's so blatant and cringey what they were aiming for, and it's going to age horribly.

A sale or going F2P isn't going to help this game. It's not what people want to play, look at or engage with at any price, even free.

I just can't believe how far Bungie have fallen. It's so depressing.

Yeah I hate the character designs too. Ironically I kind of love the world design though, like the maps and levels and such. I'd rather see like Helldivers or Arc Raiders looking characters in the Marathon environments, like I honestly think the contrasting styles would look better together than what they have now. Because lets be honest, it will be real hard to sell cosmetics for characters who look so terrible. I'm sure some people like the character designs, but judging from the CCU numbers it probably is the minority.

Exactly it's awful I don't know how anyone can even remotely enjoy looking at that trash

Even if F2P, it won't change the ugly art and frustrating gameplay.
Losing hours of loot hunting in minutes (seconds) just doesn't sound appealing at all. F2P might make it worst since there is no incentive from cheaters not to cheat since they can always create a new account if banned.

At least in Destiny 2, you don't lose all your shit (unless the fuckers at Bungie sunset it) when you fail a Raid, Gambit, Trials, etc.

Not a chance Sony expected this to chart lower than WWE26.

Please. It's like yall honestly don't understand how budgets, forecasts, and math works.
