Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

It's a fascinating scenario, because ARC Raiders *specifically* designed their game so that while it does have PvP and is an extraction shooter, they went further to ensure that those who don't have as much time to invest *can* have fun with it, which probably is why it resulted in having so much better success *and* player retention.

Marathon has a desert for content until sometime in June(I think) and unless they take herculean efforts, they will not make it until then with much of a playerbase left.

There was a person who broke down what is happening on another place that I felt had merit.

People who only had an hour or two to play each week were complaining. They were told to "git gud". So they quit.

People who only had a few hours to play were complaining. They were told to "git gud", so they moved on.

People who played moderately began to see flaws and were also told the same thing. They left.

Now the remaining hard-core players have found out that "git gud" doesn't work out so well when you run everyone off.

Now struggle to find matches or, like Divisions Dark Zone, find that you're just fighting the same group of people over and over because that's all that remains in the game.

I bet theres a lot of ....

Why are digital foundry saying that

Eyeballing the stats, tracking today -3%. Peak CCU today might be about 26.5k. Another weekend where Sat and Sun are both lower than a Friday.

I think the overwhelming discourse around the cheating, the community that initially was invested in the game starting to point out flaws, the only reason for logging in being like one day a week..

That kind of stuff invariably takes a pretty sizable toll, so it wouldn't surprise me if the % decline returns to the standard 5% or maybe even higher this week.

And it is probably reasonable to assume that ARC will probably put out something pretty substantial again for content long before Bungie gears up for Season 2, which is I think still over 2 months away?

Going to be pretty dire for Bungle even by the end of this month at this rate.

You will never hear the phrase "Omega Genre" and not think of an oracle named Men_in_Boxes and the beautiful genre of Extraction...ever again for the rest of your life.

I've inseminated you with the concept.
You are talking with the master inseminator, and I can guarantee you...you are not inseminating shit.

9 pm completed hour CCU. All time low peak
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Today's peak at 25.1k is -63.2k or -72%

Today vs yesterday: 25.1k vs 27.4k (-2.3k or -8%)

Yesterday's low 11.3k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 10.4k. But no doubt should drop hard to 8k (or less) as it's a work night

Sun vs Sun: 25.1k vs 31k (-4.9k or -16%)

Today's Sun peak is similar to this past Wed which was 25.4k. Assuming Sun to Mon is -10% (every transition has been -10 to -14%), peak tomorrow should be about 22-23k. If it trends down, there is possibility it goes below 20k by the time Cryo Thur comes around for a rebound

Alternate method to estimate peaks and valleys (ballpark ratios)
On normal weekdays, 3:1. For example, a peak 30k will have a low of 10k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

No amount of glazing will change the simple fact that Marathon is just not a good game and is getting what it deserves. 🤷🏻‍♂️

No surprise at the crazy look. Marathon's dev started around 2019/20 and Jag's new cars started dev in 2021 as per reports. That was ultimate time for DEI and weird pet projects wasting corporate money.

Also a fantastic time for any tech company itching to get bought out. Rock bottom interest rates and companies like MS, Sony, Embracer were buying up game studios like candy. Any sellers hit the lottery. A great example too around that time is the rush for sports gambling. So one bite pizza guy sold Bar Stool Sports for half a billion to Penn. It tanked and he rebought it back from them for $1 three years later. Tech is just one of those industries with tons of money floating around. All you need is a good idea (for gaming you can be a new studio with zero) but someone will often swing by and offer big money rolling the dice on they are the next dream gold mine, as the sales pitch will be more valuable than the actual existing product or financials.

It might be a late night bloodbath. Previous low was 7.5k. But here's how it's tracking.

Previous worst day was this past Weds. Peak 25.4k and it's late night low was 7.5k. At midnight, it had 22.3k CCU. That was the lowest midnight CCU on record at the time.

Today's peak is 25.1k. But the midnight hour peak is already down to 19.6k. Should hit about 6.5k tonight.

Who knows what the late night low will be, but it's trending so bad now it might even bottom out at 6k. Previous low was Weds at 7.5k.

Weds peak 25.4k --> 2 am 14.6k --> ultimate low 7.5k (51% of 2 am)

Today peak 25.1k --> 2 am 12.9k --> est. low 6.6k (if 51% of 2 am holds up)

It could be closer to 6k since todays drop is accelerating. So maybe around 6 to 6.5k.

It rarely even makes it into the top 50 now and is often not even in the top 100.

Sentiment is turning against it somewhat in the subreddit, especially Cryo which is supposed to be the content that keeps numbers up during weekends. Situation will become dire soon(arguably already occurring) if Bungie can't turn things around. I still think there is a chance they can do so, but I'm not overly optimistic.

With numbers struggling now on PC, it's likely atrocious on console where it was never very good really to begin with.

Hey, I was right again. 6.6k. Although to be honest I did have multiple estimates above so I inadvertently covered my ass. lol. For fun, here's today's projection for laughs.

Sun to Mon transition using historical -10 to 14%. Peak yesterday 25.1k less 10-14% = 21.6-22.6k

Using typical week over week -20%. Last Mon peak 28.3k less 20% = 22.6k

So youre looking at about 22.5k give or take 500.

Tonight's low should be about 6k at 6 am or so before it goes to server down time drops as it gets close to 8 am. Might break to the 5's.

I'd love to think this failing (and all the others) will send a message to the major publishers to stop throwing most their money into the Gaas firepit, and there's mumblings that Sony is refocusing on the games that people actually bought ps5's for…but I'll believe it when I see it.

Till then, may these things continue to collapse studios, and fingers crossed the talented people move onto better things.

We are at a month of a release of.250+ million Bungie game and on the largest platform for it, it is something like 90 percent lower than its launch peak….

No this is not a maintenance day.

A fucking month. What is supposed to be the honeymoon stage of successful GaaS.

Season 2 could save the game if they added some new maps and made a better single player mode

But it doesn't sound like they are doing either of those things
The problem is that I doubt Bungie will get rid of the cheaters. Then what will kill the hype of some players will be the account wide wipe as it happens in any extraction shooter. All in all, I doubt Bungie can do any meaningful change like adding PvE or stuff like that. The game wasn't built with that in mind and the studio has always been slow on the up take.

They spent 4 years and 200 mil doing 4 maps and 1 game mode.... I really dont think they have the competence to get too much content done quickly

If they added a better single player mode with all AI (either no other runners or with AI runners) then cheaters wouldn't matter for that

They also wouldn't need to wipe progression if they had a real single player mode. They could just separate single player progression from multiplayer progression and never wipe single player progression.

Sadly it won't happen. Bungie is just that stubborn.

They need to shake things up or this game is dead.
