Minus One dethroned 1954 for me, and is my favorite film of all time.

Shin is good, but definitely under the hype (for me personally), and definitely a pretty isolated style from the rest (though it's main vein stays true to Godzilla, I mean more the comedic elements and style).

You definitely need knowledge of Japanese society and Politics for it to be relatable.

My major gripe is actually... I just feel like it deviates too far from Godzilla (design and ability wise), to a point where it almost feels like it is not Godzilla.

But it is, so I still love it

Shin was mostly about how awful Japanese bureaucracy is, while that's a nice concept it didn't really work great as a Godzilla movie and as someone mentioned it isn't very interesting to someone who isn't immersed in Japanese society and culture

Minus One is a more less universal story about the horrors of war and survivor's guilt and could appeal to anyone in any nation

Minus One definitely.

But I love Shin Godzilla. And I don't even get the political satire of it. But I just love the visuals. They did an amazing job with a low budget of making that Godzilla look real. You could feel the sense of scale more than any other Godzilla movie thanks to their clever cinematography and stylistic choices (making him move like an animatronic).

But Minus One is the best Godzilla movie ever. It's pretty amazing how the Godzilla franchise just recently had two of its best movies ever, while every other long running franchise has been on the decline.

Minus One was straightforward, family-oriented, and hopeful. Turns out after decades of Hollywood subverting expectations, it was refreshing.

I only watched Shin because of the NGE connection, and don't remember much about it. It was aight.

I found Minus One to be beyond boring and predictable, with some of the least interesting character plots imaginable. The cheap and forced acting didn't help.
I had to finish it at 2x speed as I cared so little about any of them.

My son inexplicably loves Shin Godzilla, even went to see it in the theatrical re-release. I like he just likes the monster design.

But I think Shin is a much more accessible and entertaining film.

I really enjoyed both, but they are quite different.

Minus one is a more straightforward monster movie. The story is a bit more generic/cliche but I did like how it had more action and I think overall it has a more universal appeal and is easier to recommend.

Shin Godzilla is basically a criticism of Japanese bureaucracy in the form of an emergency response drama that just happens to have Godzilla in it. In a way it's a more unique and novel take on a monster/kaiju movie, but I can see how it can be disappointing if you go in expecting something more traditional and then you get a movie that's 90% people in offices talking as Godzilla stands around.

Minus One was a bit too sappy for my tastes. Shin was genuinely creepy in some scenes, like when Godzilla is newly born and roams the city, not being able to stand. It was also cool how you got to follow the authorities scrambling together plans.
