Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

So with Marathon the "bad" parts of the extraction genre are felt more since the game is more PvP focused(mostly due to the map size the notifications given to other players and ttk is so low). The solution then is to not care about dying not care about losing and to just keep playing for fun.

So basically you are asking your fanbase to achieve enlightenment.

So if we have to achieve enlightenment to enjoy Marathon that kinda limits your audience, right? Like I have not yet achieved enlightenment. I am actively working towards that. You either need to be a super PvP sweat who wins all the time or someone who no longer cares that they lose. Achieving enlightenment is the highest barrier to entry I've ever heard of for a game.
Same "enlightenment philosophy" applies to ARC Raiders so that's not the limiting factor. Think of it like toys. The game gives you so many toys to play with and a toy chest that can't fit all of them. Eventually everyone just learns to start using (and losing) the toys because there's no sense in trying to make the toy chest bigger. The game also gives you tons of new toys all the time to help with toy loss.

The limiting factor comes from other sources.

1. It's just a sweaty sweaty game.
2. Game feels like it needed 6 more months in development as Joe Ziegler learned some lessons too late...

Players did not naturally form up with 2 friends en mass. The Marathon team seems to be pivoting towards meeting players how they play (solos and duos) only recently.

Man the TTK is absurdly fast.

That's what I hated most about my experience on the server slam. Most times I'd die before I even knew what was happening, let alone have any time to react at all, it was so frustrating. That's one thing Arc Raiders does really well, TTK is longer so most engagements actually feel like a fight you have a chance of winning, unlike how Marathon plays with its near instant TTK.

Won't this be Concord 3.0?

1.0 Concord (RIP to the OG)
2.0 High Guard (Insert ByeGuard joke here)
3.0 Marathon (Coming Soon!)
Is there any list somewhere which combine ALL Woke and/or GaaS failures into a single timeline. Basically any game that can attribute its existence to corporations creating things that gamers never asked for.

I think only Men_in_Boxes Men_in_Boxes can make that list.

I've seen others try to make the list but they put games in there that don't deserve it and leave games out that do.

He may not be the hero we wanted or the one we deserved, but he's the hero we needed.

OH!

There's also Suicide Squad, that stupid Knight Game that came out and also wasn't there a museum thief heist game recently?

If I read "Who asked for this" 42 more times I'm going into the looney bin.

Nobody asked for The Godfather, The automobile, or the printing press. It's not up to the do nothings to decide what gets made.

Hey, check this PDF out
All these factors strongly encourage the long-term health of the Call of Duty player base, helping the title avoid the feedback loop of low-to-average skill players continually leaving the game as the average skill of the population rises. By avoiding this feedback mechanism, the remaining 10-20% of the player population benefits. If low skill players engage with our titles less, then higher and higher skilled players become the new low skill players (relatively speaking). As a result, they then experience the negative outcomes of being the lowest skilled players in the core multiplayer population, likely resulting in those players then returning at reduced rates. This ultimately becomes a feedback loop, likely resulting in a player population of only the best of the best, and a very unwelcoming experience for any new players. As this would adversely impact the overall player pool, the net result would be a negative experience for all players.
It's too late to do now but I think Bungie should have had SBMM in the game to prevent this feedback loop the game has been seeing in the last couple of weeks. I thought that paper was a very interesting read and relevant to Marathon.

Exactly! Everyone knows that money appears out of thin air, not from paying customers.

That only works if the innovations the market failed to imagine actually fulfill a want or need.

There was a huge market for crime films in the early 1970s lol

There's not going to be any huge bumps coming to revive the game. Season 2's biggest draw is a night version of one of the maps, Season 3 is almost half a year away.

I don't think Sony will make a big show of pulling the plug, they've already been humiliated by Concord. If I had to guess the team will be reduced to a skeleton crew and Season 3's new map never sees the light of day.

Also, that last sentence is a fucking sure fire copy pasta. Congrats!

But the game is hardcore right

I don't like self-revive at all, very bad mechanic. For that matter has a BR enjoyer I never liked free redeploys, or buybacks, or anything along those lines. Ya get knocked, ya hope your teammate can get you up. If not, too fucking bad! You might have to wait up to 30 minutes for the next game, and your contributions will be looking at circles on a map screen trying to help what's left of your team secure the win. I really do miss that PUBG early access/1.0 style pacing.

That said, funny and sad as that clip is... and having zero experience on Marathon... geeze it looks like a misplay to me. Eyeballing the clip it looks like it takes about 8 seconds for the guy's self rez to proc. It looks like it takes about 2 seconds to reload and dump his double barrel shottie. And it looks like once he is downed himself a double shot shottie quickly finishes him off. So if he just invests 6 more shots instead of playing Minecraft on him he wins. Shouldn't make that particular mistake again.

Men_in_Boxes Men_in_Boxes You said you consider yourself top 5 hundo in the world at Marathon, what say you?

See I read stuff like that and man who has time for that shit lol that's why I fucking think BR and extraction are both such awful genres, just reading little snippets like that is why I'm so glad I avoid these games.

I thought that clip was hilarious and is one of the reasons why Marathon is special.

That said, I'm open to making self rez more rare / expensive. I generally like it in the game and my success rate for pulling off a successful self rez is probably less than 10%.

I think the problem is Marathons close quarter maps. Too much fighting in hallways where you're closer than 10m to your opponent. That twitchy gameplay nullifies the more interesting parts of the sandbox.

The time it took was watching the clip 2 or 3 times plus the time to type, I doubt I spent more time on it than you spend on an average day in this thread. Analyzing why you (or in this case someone else) lost is one of the best ways to improve at literally any game.

Sure, but I guess my question more specifically, once he had all three down it wasn't an unwinnable scenario, he could have just finished them off with his shotgun right? And possibly just using his other weapon?

Yeah, I thought that too. It definitely wasn't some unwinnable scenario but everything happens so fast in those CQC situations...

I could definitely see myself doing what that guy did despite my (probable) top 500 position.

For sure. I made a far more egregious misplay under much less severe time pressure in Redsec yesterday and snatched defeat from the jaws of likely victory. But hopefully I won't make that particular mistake again after comparing my in-game perceptions at the time to the objective reality of the recording.

No I know but any game that if what you're saying is true you're just down or you're not able to get going off the bat, waiting 30 mins just sounds awful.. I've won a few BR matches in war zone, and one or two in fortnite... And I just don't get the appeal man tbh

Sorry, I misread your comment. It seems like all the BRs have leaned into the lowering the downtime as much as possible though. In Redsec it's very rare for me to be out of the game for more than a minute or two. It's akin to round-based stuff like Siege or CS at this point. If you're playing solos you die and you just requeue. If you're playing with your boys, you die, you're still shooting the shit, and they'll get you back soon or die trying so it's not a big deal. Now if you matchmake into squads with randoms, that's where it can get tedious, which is why I don't do that, and don't recommend other people do either. But those guys are nice because hey they're uncoordinated and thus easier kills, and pumping your KD up a little always feels good.

10 pm completed hour CCU. Today's peak reached just after 11 pm as it's leveled off
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Peak today at 28.5k is -59.8k or -68%

Today vs yesterday: 28.5k vs 26.9k (+1.6k or +6%)

Yesterday's low 8k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 8.5k. It's a Fri night, so probably more like 10k

Fri vs Fri: 28.5k vs 36.2k (-7.7k or -21%)

Today's Friday peak is similar to this past Monday which was 28.3k

Alternate method to estimate peaks and valleys (ballpark ratios)
On normal weekdays, 3:1. For example, a peak 30k will have a low of 10k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

Honestly I am surprised just how many times Marathon remains in Steamdb trending page.
The game is officially behind Hunt Showdown and in a week will fall below The Finals and Arena Breakout (per daily active users page), metric I was seeking.

No way in 6 months CCU gonna increase. No game except Apex Legends were able to triple their CCU count within 6 months.
Hunt took 2 years to triple their CCU, and all others (ReadyorNot, GrayZone, Squad, Payday2, Division2) took 2-4 years to reverse their fortune.
Arc Raiders, Helldivers, TheFinals and many others never outdid their launch.

I actually liked Marathon and its lore but I don't think Destiny PvP addicts like I thought earlier could even stick to it for 2 years. No way.

In gameplay Marathon is like the movie Hostle and the other players are the people who pay and we are the vic.

That is why it bleeds.

It bottomed out last night at 10.5k and it was a Friday. Last Friday's bottom was 13.5k. -22% even at the lows. The week over week change continues to be -20%-ish which has been going on since launch. Hasnt stabilized yet.

Daily Active Users currently at 87. Lowest ever I've seen. Give it another week, and it should be over 100.
