Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

I haven't played it because it quite frankly looks shit.

Not the mechanics, well I don't know about them, but the aesthetics. It looks like a prototype.

I haven't limited free time and I'm not going to waste it on something I don't enjoy looking at.

Extraction will continue growing rapidly over the next 5 - 10 years. You better buckle up.
Copycats gonna copycat until the market corrects itself

The survivors (my guess is 2 or 3 big ones) will stick around for the loyal crowd but this isn't building toward some massive decade long boom

When even a Bungie game can't hide how derivative it all is, that's how you know the genre has drowned in copycat mediocrity

The $250M rumor I mentioned way back in the infant days of this thread gets corroboration from Taul Passi. Yeah, that's not good for Bungie
I remember one of the defense force laughing at that estimate.

For some reason he has disappeared almost as quickly as the playerbase for this game despite him having a blast.

This genre will be bigger than Battle Royale. Its the Borg of videogames. It has no weaknesses from a conceptual point.

Who knows how many titles it'll support, but we aren't even close to its apex.

It's a flop. There is absolutely no denying that fact.

That said, for those enjoying it. Good. Not too often such an expensive and prestigious studio makes a game for very few

What the fuck were they doing with all that money this whole time?
Partying obviously

I think extraction shooters will be a big genre too, but not in the way you think it will.

I think PvE extraction shooters are the "next big thing". Just look at the three most successful extraction shooters:

Arc Raiders (which lets face it, most people play it as co-op PvE, not PvP), Helldivers II (another co-op PvE), and Escape from Duckov (a single player PvE). The three extraction shooters with the highest CCU peak are all PvE, and its not even close.

PvP isn't the draw for extraction shooters, PvE and co-op is. Judging from the statistics at least. 😎

ARC Raiders is bigger than Helldivers 2
Escape from Tarkov is bigger than Duckov.
Delta Force is bigger than Grey Zone Warfare
Hunt Showdown is bigger than Incursion Red River
Marathon is bigger than Forever Winter

So it's definitely a PvP focused genre, but the guiding light is ARC Raiders. The biggest Extraction games going forward will court both PvP and PvE players.

It really is the Omega genre.

I'd put extraction as easily one of the worst genres in gaming history, battle royale held that for awhile but extraction said hold my beer
These game modes seem pointless to me. It's basically making a whole game out of create a class. I'd much rather spend 30 seconds building a class then spawn into a map with all my gear.

1 am completed hour CCU
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Peak today at 26.9k is -61.4k or -70%

Today vs yesterday: 26.9k vs 25.4k (+1.5k or +6%)

Yesterday's low 7.5k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 8k

Cryo bump as always increasing the gamers on day one. This time +6%

Alternate method to estimate peaks and valleys (ballpark ratios)
On normal weekdays, 3:1. For example, a peak 30k will have a low of 10k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

A PVE-only mode would do wonders for Marathon.

Personally I still honestly believe that Bungie could turn Marathon around.
Not millions of players but I sustainably high enough player count to make the game profitable enough to keep it going.
There's so much you could add to the game, I just hope Bungie and its employees want that too.

Quick morning check and the game bottomed at 8k. About +7% so it held onto gains.

Even just adding traditional TDM would help. No looting bodies. Loadouts maxed at a certain value. Game still has uesc bots and loot to find but you don't keep it.

Maps aren't even that big so it's doable, while adding that mode to other extraction shooters with giant maps wouldnt make sense. The game already has a COD/TF vibe to it. So it'd fit right in.

I agree, you could have a horde mode and a rogue like mode. And to not interface with the extraction economy, keep them separate with the prizes being skins, profile emblems and gun charms or even separate story progressions.
Also TDM could have separate size areas, just gate off the tunnel access.
Bungie have the best gameplay to jump off here, the foundation is solid and addictive.

Literally anything more than the one single mode.

Maybe it's harder to make than I think but shit like horde/survival mode or traditional mp modes are essential as long as the map size makes sense to implement. You don't even have to make brand new maps. This goes for any shooter not just marathon.

It adds so much variety.

It's like when I play PC strategy games. I always value variety so I skew to ones with random map/skirmish modes so I can dabble how I want making a match customized how I want. Worst games imo? The ones with a canned SP campaign and that's it. But if it has both I can bounce back and forth. And that's offline SP gaming since I don't play strategy games online against people which adds even more options.

But some reason most extraction games seem to have a really narrow focus on game loop and maps. Reading it tarkov is an exception as it seems to have lots of maps and pve too.

I always thought they could chop up the maps and build selectable kits with a ranked mode like tarkov arena. I'd honestly love to play that.

So with Marathon the "bad" parts of the extraction genre are felt more since the game is more PvP focused(mostly due to the map size the notifications given to other players and ttk is so low). The solution then is to not care about dying not care about losing and to just keep playing for fun.

So basically you are asking your fanbase to achieve enlightenment.
Enlightenment: Spiritual & Religious Meaning
In Eastern traditions like Buddhism and Hinduism, enlightenment (often called Bodhi or Nirvana) is the ultimate spiritual goal.
Vocabulary.com +1
  • Core Realization: It is an awakening to the true nature of reality, which frees a person from the cycle of suffering, desire, and reincarnation.
  • Key Insights: According to Stanford University, it involves understanding things as they truly are, which includes recognizing that all things are impermanent and that there is no fixed, separate self.
  • Experience: It is often described as a state of deep peace, clarity, and "waking up" from a dream-like state of delusion.
So if we have to achieve enlightenment to enjoy Marathon that kinda limits your audience, right? Like I have not yet achieved enlightenment. I am actively working towards that. You either need to be a super PvP sweat who wins all the time or someone who no longer cares that they lose. Achieving enlightenment is the highest barrier to entry I've ever heard of for a game.

They simply need to retardmax…I've been doing that since my 20s. It can be very annoying tho to other players who are playing to win 🤣
