[Digital Foundry] Crimson Desert - The Big PS5/PS5 Pro Tech Review - Every Graphics Mode Tested!

Series X is marginally better than base PS5 in most tests barring some exceptions. Series S doesn't have FSR on either of its two graphics modes. Series S also has very weird blobby shadows indoors.

this shows again why developers should add a cheat menu (hide it behind a cheat code, flash a warning sign etc... but do it) that allows users to adjust settings.

drop that Series S quality mode to 835p, FSR3 that up to 1440p. disable SSR.
I bet it would look far more pleasant.

same goes for the performance mode on PS5 and Series X. drop the internal res, use FSR3 to target 1440p.
your TAA is pure dogshit, to the point where every mode that used FSR3 or PSSR to reconstruct to 4k from much lower resolutions looks cleaner than your native 4k mode on Pro... so you should avoid using your shitty TAA at any cost (or fix your shitty TAA...)

then they fixed that blurriness issue on pro, by adding a PSSR AA option for 4K, but then oversharpen it to a crisp...

The game is a joke in consoles

How is it a console issue when the video depicts a relatively modern PC CPU dropping below 30fps? The game clearly doesn't handle well huge groups of NPCs fighting regardless of platform, but I imagine it's also not a situation you'll see very often unless you deliberately trigger fights with entire towns or some very specific quests.

The game is dropping to low 20 on Performance mode on PS5 pro (low 10 on quality mode) in some battles (specially chapter 7). When this is happening, even if you kill every enemies the framerate continue as shit until the last enemy is killed, that show how terrible it's this game optimized.

I would expect they would optimize the number of enemies in a main quest on a fixed hardware if they have problems getting multiple NPC on screen. Also those drops are happening until you kill the last enemy, that shows the terrible optimization this game have. I would expect the framerate going up every time you are killing enemies.

the Jaguar cores really forced developers to take CPU performance seriously. ever since they aren't targeting them anymore CPU performance took a nosedive across the board.

and people think it's weird that I like a low power system that limits developers...
believe me, the PS6 handheld is the best thing that could have happened next gen, because it only has half as many performance cores, and only ⅕ of the GPU grunt of the home console... it will keep developers in check!

I wish both Sony and MS had Series S like systems this gen, with only half the CPU power. I promise you, games would have looked and run better across the board if that was the case.
with only the Series S there, which has about the same CPU performance, and which is handled like an unwanted step child because it's an Xbox and doesn't sell well... this sadly didn't help to the extent a similar system by Sony would have helped, especially if the CPU was much slower as well.

so everyone should already thank the PS6 handheld in advance, because it will guarantee that devs need to optimise their games more, ESPECIALLY if it turns out to be a massive success and having a bad PS6P port results in bad PR.

There are still NPCs on your side, their Ai has to be calculated etc.

Game is not terrible optimized, it just requires shit ton of CPU power in those scenarios.

If you have the same framerate with 100 NPC than 10 NPC something is wrong.

You don't know if framerate is the same.
It's the same because I played that quest, the framerate is terrible until you kill the last one. And this is happening in other areas too with no friendly NPC, where you are in low 20 with only one NPC

But without tools you don't know the framerate, outside of VRR windows everything looks terrible.

During Pailune fight my FPS dropped to ~42 on 5800X3D - that is more or less double the performance of Zen 2 in consoles.

It would have been interesting if Sony had released a PS5 Series S, but opted to keep 16GB of VRAM (at a lower speed) and reduce the APU to 6 CPU cores and 18 GPU CUs. The biggest problem with the Xbox Series S is the lack of RAM and the fact that nothing like DLSS existed on AMD hardware in 2020. If FSR4 had existed in 2020, this generation would have maintained a certain parity with PCs, except for ray tracing and the 120+ FPS.

There are multiple camps where you kill every enemy and the framerate is shit until you get the 0% waiting until new enemies spawn. In those scenarios the FPS never recover until you get the 0% even if there are 1-3 NPC in the area at that moment.

But they never turn off those Ai's I think, because enemies will respawn infinitely until percentage goes to zero.

Big win for those (losers) playing at 30fps on the Pro.

But they overdid that sharpening IMO, slider would be good (for PC version as well).

Series X Performance mode is "bad eyesight" emulator
