Cyberpunk 2077 PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements detailed (Patch releases April 8)

The gunplay is clunky, the feel of the driving is frankly awful compared to the competition, and it has one of the flattest, least emotionally resonant stories in a big game in recent memory. I tapped out after 5 hours.

And before people say "tHaT's NoT eNoUgH tImE!", Clair Obscur hit higher notes in its first half hour. You can ray trace a turd and it will still be a turd.
Everything isn't for everybody. The game is clearly loved it just didn't capture you. Your opinion of CP is in the minority overall but I feel the same about Witcher 3.. The combat is bad, the main story is bad, the side quest are boring. People love it though so my opinion is clearing in the minority. I loved Witcher 2 on top of that but 3 just failed to capture my interest and after 20 hours I stopped playing.

Just got a physical copy two weeks ago in anticipation of this. Can't wait to pop it in and give it another go. May even light one up and play it on Friday.

I'm confused - wasn't this game an absolute dumpester fire?

Now we all suddenly like it huh? what is going on.
It was only a dumpster fire on consoles at launch, and that was all technical issues. Game is all patched up on current gen consoles now. Have you really not played it?

Are there RT reflections in rain puddles?
There are bodies of water in Dogtown with RT reflections. Not all puddles though.

I like DF a lot in general but super dissapointed with how bad was this latest patch coverage. I mean, didn't even bother to take a peek at other glass surfaces beyond car windows?

I think the ray-tracing 60 fps mode is the way to go (Looks gorgeous and runs great most of the time). All 3 modes drop frames in CPU limited scenarios. I would still drop the base resolution in the ray-tracing 60 mode and let PSSR do the heavy lifting to smooth performance even more.

*also: Reflections dont seem to include yourself, only the environment, which felt kinda weird but also understandable in terms of rendering budget.

And once again - It's incredible what PSSR2 can still get out of games you thought already looked super good anyway! I love my Pro (and Cyberpunk)! 😅

I don't think DF did a thorough job with their analysis. Blind Oliver captured some footage just walking/driving around, mostly outdoors, and had Alex comment on it. It's shocking that they didn't even attempt to do this comparison that was quite popular back in the day:

Old RT mode. Fat-assed Black Jesus of the Afterlife has always looked good on PS5 IMO. In you could tolerate 30.

Alex mentioned it works in all smooth surfaces, not just car windows.

oliver clarified on twitter that the reflections seem to only apply to perfectly smooth surfaces. that includes all car windows, some car paints, and very rare glass panels on stuff like vending machines.

they basically put the roughness cutoff for reflections to absolute zero, and the vast majority of materials in the game have a value above 0.

this includes most building windows as well, which are almost perfect mirrors, but not quite, and therefore don't have RT Reflections on the Pro.

I think I played for a while , maybe 3-4 hours, it was super broken. The cops were spawning all over the place and cars teleporting around. I kinda shelved it, reviews where extremely bad on steam and I just backlogged it. Got it on PC now tho. Will check it out..

You mean it looks better than they made it out to do?

I dont recall him saying that about RT mode, you sure he wasnt referring to the Ray tracing pro mode?
The general census here was, its just for cars.
About reflections on RT mode (not RT Pro)

Regarding RT reflections only being present in cars: you're right. I'm not able to find them mentioning it anywhere else. Oliver mentioned he also saw it in glossy car paint and Alex explained why it would work on car windows and smooth car paint, and I guess I just extrapolated that explanation to every other smooth surface. Which makes sense. But that doesn't explain why they would say it only works in cars, which is not true. They made a mistake in haste, I presume.

Water also has reflections... Really poor showing for DF here.

if it's on water they could probably set a higher roughness cutoff in general.

while this is in theory a smooth material, the ripples have a similar effect as having a rough surface... and if it runs fine with such a large reflective surface and that much scattering, they can probably apply it to more surfaces.

makes me wonder if they used the wrong value on accident tbh lol...
and it wouldn't surprise me either, after hearing how devs sometimes forgot to turn on Anisotropic texture filtering on PS4 back in the day, because it wasn't part of the engine's default preset for PS4 🙃

They've been consistently lazy with PSSR2 coverage. Said there were patches for PSSR2 games. Outright lie. Just been whitelisted to always run the toggle as per Mark Cerny.

Any footage they capture is always at the start of the game or very early areas. No idea why the majority of the footage they've used for CP2077 is in daytime either. Wouldn't be surprised if it's footage CDPR have sent them.

I like DF. Don't get me wrong. But they're right lazy cunts now. Spesh Oliver.

What the hell is DF doing?

Surprised by the usually meticulous Battaglia.. first he says only on car windows, then corrected to car bodies as well, now water also. It's clear he doesn't give a shit about anything that isn't PC, but come on.

Yeah some strange decisions for sure. 1440p base resolution is just plain wasteful with PSSR 2.

I agree his take on Miles Morales on PS5 was cringy as hell.

I played the game on a 3060 and a 5080 and enjoyed myself both times.

Yes obviously the psycho RT looked better but at the end of the day a good game is a good game.

wtf, have the guys at DF even truly played with the patch ? (images from resetera - RT Pro vs. Performance)

Maybe they mean 120Hz over HDMI 2.1 required for the 40 FPS mode? VRR doesn't even work on PS5 or PS5 Pro at 48 FPS and below.
It's the same technique the likes of insomniac did with Ratchet and clank etc. 40fps mode is viable for sure. 30fps a no go for me.

Why do people still watch Digital Foundry? they just release slop videos, they haven't got a single prediction correct in terms of hardware, i don't see where the value comes from?

Embarrassing.
Are you people new about the Battaglia approach of such stuff? It's all about overhyping to the stars whatever nvidia cooking and minimise all the rest, especially if it's playstation branded, I was already dubious about raytracing reflections only limited just to the cars.

Was able to boot up my save and try out the modes over lunch break. RT Pro looks slightly better but I'm not sure it's worth the 20 fps hit. I think the 60fps mode is right for me.

I see value in the footage they record and pixel counts, so that we can come to our own conclusion. But in this case, even that was pretty sloppy... so... eh...

Generally when Alex makes his own videos, he is pretty thorough. But given this isn't PC, he probably doesn't give a shit and just commented on whatever Oliver recorded. And Oliver has always made pretty obvious mistakes. After the DLSS 5 fiasco, it's pretty clear he doesn't have a clue what to even look for.

Come on give Oliver some slack, he posted an addendum afterall...

On fucking 'concession machines' with no mention whatsoever of those huge-ass bodies of water or surfaces like these:

Not sure if it was mentioned here but RT shadows are also the full Psycho version now, covering every element including small blades of grass, unlike Base PS5 Fidelity RT:

Man. What a fucking embarrassment. I was driving it on a "freeway" in the rain and there was glass on a structure for an on ramp.

RT reflections clear as day. I'll look again for it when I get back home.

But where is your screenshot from on the map? Near city centre I'm presuming?
