Marathon |OT| A Shell of its Former Self.

We discussed this earlier on in the thread. No issues with running them solo or with a premade. It completely fucks the game with randoms.

Like I said just a bit further up. If you are not running Rook or a premade, the experience is less than stellar for most players.

The niche that free kits fill to me are doing priority contracts that require you to run a marathon back and forth across a map like Dire Marsh. Nothing worse than trying to do something that you need to do in one run or a contested contract only to get sandwiched between 2 other teams doing the same. Had that happen on one of the NC contracts just the other day, the one in Bio Research I think. Wiped one team and before we could gather up and what not we had another team come in that were obviously watching waiting to clean up. Grubs.

I'm having way too much fun with free kits for those to be removed. We use normal lobbies, to get better gear for Cryo and Ranked. Nothing like the thrill of going into a duos with a free kit and come out with purple shields and decked weapons - just to put them in the vault and put on a new free kit 😂

That's how you get the profiteer title btw. Right now I have ~900k coins and ~370k in my vault

"We" being the operative word here. I always warm up with free kits or for a rags to riches run when playing with friends whom I know won't be affected. Relegating free kits to solos and pre-mades seems like a fair compromise.

Makes no sense. I guarantee you the exfil rate for randoms queueing up, are much lower than premades. Taking away free kits, would only lead those players away from the game.

That was never in dispute. A major factor in their lower rates is spamming free kits with no cores or implants, no useful equipment, shields which melt on contact, and weak healing items for when damage is taken. Weaning people off of free kits and into at least a paid sponsored kit or minimal loadout would help improve exfil rates overall.

There is no doubt that running a proper kit will improve your exfil rate, I don't think that part was ever in dispute. I don't think throwing gear to the wind while doing silly contracts that require you to cross an entire map 2-3 times while snipers sit on rooftops is a good use of said gear though. It depends on the contracts but some are far quicker and easier to do on free kits.

So I'll be the only kitted guy in my fill squad game? Yea nah. I don't play solo. It's either fill squad or pre-made squad with friends.

You're not following the discussion. I would like the following:

Free kits allowed:
  • In Solo Play
  • In Trio play with a full squad
Free kits not allowed:
  • In trios matchmaking when your party has fewer than 3 members

People would be able to play solo or play in a group if they want to use free kits without impacting the experience of others who brought gear.

The only other way around it would be to only match free kit players with others with a deathwish and nothing to lose.

I don't care if they end up in my matches as opponents. If a squad is going to roll me in free kits they were going to roll me regardless.

Above a certain level there is zero reason to run a free kit.

Solo's whatever, but if you are going into outpost with randoms then you are just a liability. Any map for that matter.

Unless we are seriously unlucky I am usually fairly kitted up before we even meet the first team of runners.

Hasn't been an issue for the most part.

Its funny when I am able to run a full match and exfil w a bunch of blue and purple gear I almost always load into the next match into a room w people that have no mics and absolutely don't know what they are doing and we wipe fairly quick.

I feel like if im just running randos the game punishes me for having a good run by taking all my gear next round due to super poor teammate placement haha

Then the one time you free kit out of frustration sees you partnered with two geared folks.

Nah I load in w randos running free kits all the time and we are able to murder our way through the level and exfil.

Really does kinda feel like it flip flops good/bad matches and teammates that are decent or not.

Kinda weird

So you get to risk nothing while i risk a 5k loadout on the off chance you gear up before we get creamed?

How's that fair? It's just unnecessary RNG on top of every other variable when random filling.

Bungie said this game is like Poker with guns. I don't see why i should ante up whilst others at the same table (same team) get to bet for free

Ah haven't noticed that myself. Maybe it's cause of attachments? I saw some purples that increase the range (and spread).
The purple barrel mod gives it an extra 4-5m range I think. The white shotgun isn't too bad, you basically need to be in knife range for it to be effective.

I have noticed that even when we are partied up the in-game voice does not transmit for all of us. One of my Marathon friends can't hear me while the other can. It's super annoying. You can fix it by muting it off and on again (yes really) but I suspect this is why many of us get put into silent teams.

Seem very random as well. We can play entire sessions without it occurring or have it happen every other match.

One of the reasons for silent teams is an xbox privacy issue I believe. You can't speak to randoms these days unless you verify your age, in the UK at least. My mate had that issue.

Just did 3 very profitable Rook runs on Outpost. Almost got myself some good goop on the 4th run but alas, a team heard me and laid waste.
I always head to the armoury in processing if i can get the keys, way safer than heading into the wheel of death.

Actually please dont
The game should lock you out (24hr cycle) if you f*** up too much.

Make Rook runs and Free Kits a finite resource. Make people use up their vault.

But when you run out of stuff in your vault?

Both work fine. Rook is one of the best things about the game. Hardline free kit sucks though lol. I would of loved a pistol free kit

This happens to me and my friends all the time. I can't here someone, they can't hear me, or sometimes there's two of us that can't hear each other but our third can hear both of us. I had no idea about the mute workaround, that would've saved some runs for sure.

But yeah I bet that's contributing to silent teams for sure, they really need to fix that

Clarky made a good point in saying the final nodes are dependent on Cryo runs which already act as the "limiter" I'm interested in.

And to be honest, the game has more pressing needs to be addressed first.

How about a horde mode in each map for solo, duos or trios that have random buildings and areas you must clear before moving on to the next one with each getting progressively harder?
The more you take down then the more ammo drops and also loot that you can take into Cryo if you want, they could put in environmental hazards too.
That could be another option for players to obtain the items to take on Cryo Archive.
Also they need to make the areas larger, is that possible?

They should have a somewhat common (blue rarity) device that allows you to rez teammates remotely.

If you're within 100m of a downed teammate you can pull out a relatively loud device that locks you in location for a period to get your teammate back in the fight. Balance it so that doing so carries a degree of risk to it.

They could even add a similar device that acts as a bomb that kills all players within 20m of teammates bag.

The 1v3 and 2v3 engagments are a problem in this game.

Triage has this ability

Great idea. You up for some games later?

What do you mean?
When a team is dominant (up 3v2 or up 3v1) oftentimes there is a lack of interesting choices to make for both sides.

If you have the advantage, you can camp bags, go about your mission objectives, or search for the remaining enemies by creating a death ball.

If you're down, you can wait out the other team by staring at a wall for 5 minutes...which isn't fun.

Generally I think the game would benefit more when it plays more like Chess than an arena shooter. Strategy & communication should be buffed over pure aim skill.

Think we are playing a different game my man.

Not the worst idea.

I think the 'can revive at all times' could use a shake up. Like something as burning the bodies in Hunt.
Maybe there should just be a timelimit on reviving eleminated teammates: make the bodies actually decay and after some time they are gone forever.

Make it like 90 seconds or something, so there's still time to make a tactical decision, but still puts pressure on the 'attacking' team.
The decaying body also emits a gas that slowly spreads, forcing the 'defending' team back. Keeping them from camping too close to the bodies.

At least there are no 'stalemates', like both parties waiting for the other to make a move.

Fun is the goal, not "privledges", whatever that means.
I can tell you, nothing is more fun and rewarding in taking a full team down by yourself.

Here's what I do 90% of the times I'm up against a full team. I retreat, making noise, so they'll hunt - I walk backwards through doors keeping myself in cover. A hunting team are often losing oversight and exposing themselves in the eagerness to catch you. That's how you win against them

Prior to a 1v3 you had:
-Positioning choices
-Use of consumables
-Aiming choices
-Heals and cover
-Self revive

Once it's a 1v3 you can:
-Rambo
-Set traps and bait
-Leave if possible
-Triage ult to pick a homie or two up

The thing is the other team is going to rush your ass in a 1v3 if they know where you are. If you're hiding like a bitch it's fair game to try to wait you out before moving on so they don't leave themselves to a new 3v3 coin flip.

"I want more tools to win a 1v3." No. You should've played better to not get into that scenario. You now have to make a big dick play.

Horrible philosophy.

This is a game in which 66% of the outcome is based on the actions of your other 2 teammates. The idea that making 1v3s should not be made more fun is preposterous considering human nature.

There is no such thing as "making a big dick play" if the experience is so off putting that 20% of your paying audience quits each week.

Fun needs to be your north star.

Again, losing a 1v3 isn't why people are quitting the game.

Losing a 1v3 us expected in most titles however it is more than possible to turn the tide in this type of situation because of the tools this games gives you

Dunno why you seem to want to "fix" the PVP aspect of this game. It's one of the games strongest points.

The majority of the games issues are structural not mechanical.
I'm not sure if you, or many other people in this thread, have thought honestly about the shortcomings of the games PvP.

The general vibe I get is "Well I like it therefore it's good and shouldn't be tinkered with."

The reality is you're only one data point and all data points are equally as valid. Bungie needs to figure out why they continue to lose their paying customer at a significant week to week clip.

The games performance on Steam is way too precarious to treat the game with such sacredness. It needs chemo ASAP.

Told you why quite a few times why i think this game is in the position it is in. PVP isn't one of them.

Right, but we must both leave room for our opinions to be wrong. I could be wrong, as could you.

I think the PvP can, and will be improved tremendously if Sony gives the game enough support. No one at Bungie thinks the PvP is in a near perfect spot, I assure you.
