Crimson Desert has sold through 4 million copies worldwide

Why there was such a hate campaign against this game I'll never understand
It's the most confusing part about it all IMO. I never thought it would be the source of so many weird debates and arguments, but here we are. I'm still not sure WHY it's such a target, it's really bizarre to me. I guess it's just a little bit of everything that people have mentioned above? I really don't know.

It's awesome seeing folks talk about a game having SO much to do in it, I mean, god forbid a AAA priced game has a ton of content. It SHOULD be that way, and a lot more common.

It's also awesome seeing a game be praised more by its community and fans, as opposed to review/game outlets. It happened with Alien Isolation and many others, and it's always wonderful to see. Just another reminder that your own opinion should be more important than anyone else's, don't miss out on things that you could potentially enjoy just because of someone else's opinion/review. If you're interested in it, check it out and see for yourself. If you're worried about getting something and it "being a waste of money" get it on Steam, you can refund it if it's genuinely not for you, but at least you gave it shot!

I look forward to picking this up in due time, which works perfectly as I can't be too irresponsible at the moment, lol.

And then they complain that we get so many remasters and remakes 🙄

I went into this game completely blind and have been enjoying it! I need to do that more often.

I'll get mixed into the hype, but will continue to ignore and scroll past the hate. I'm just too old for that stuff lol

They're showing how over-payed (per efficiency) and over-ideological studios in the west are.

A lot of the technical prowess in the game we don't see until Rockstar releases their once a decade bangers.

because it's not according to Western DEI standard, no LGBTQ+, no diversity

One of the reasons was because people wanted character creator and there isn't one. But when you think about it, the armor/gear you get for Kliff makes it look like you have a completely different character. Especially when you have a helmet on.

What "hate campaign"? You mean the 78 Metacritic?

There was another medieval open world RPG that was being developed around the same time. It had you play as a lesbian knight trying to save her princess lover or something like that. When people started flowing over to Crimson Desert, the other devs got mad and started spreading hate that CD wasn't inclusive enough and shouldn't be supported. This caused a Streisand effect that made more people support CD.

No idea if that other game is in development still or has been released, but the defenders of that game continue to trash talk CD.

Read the above
I mean, its hard not to have one's mind go to this....But, is that really it?

Yeah, the story sucks, but the rest of the game is excellent.

I don't even think the story is that bad either. It's mysterious and leaves your imagination running (so far, for me).

It's also a slice in a larger history/lore... dropping you in the middle of that specific slice in time. It's no more less than any Souls or other high praised games where people don't get this obsessed over sToRy with them.

I think it's all grasping at straws and the hyper focus on that one thing is misdirection excuses for the real reason in the west with these ideologues, and that's gatekeeping.

4 milliosn is a good number, don't get me wrong, but I wanted and thought this game would sell 8-10 millions in a month.
Quite disapointing that people couldn't see its enormous potential from the beginning.

To be honest, even in this forum I felt quite alone trying to hype this game as much as I could for the last 2 years, while seeing A LOT of skeptic uninformed coments.

So weird that this game has so many people that hate on it.

It's funny reading people complaining about game reviews, when most of the reviews of the game have been positive.

Maybe this explains some of the unusual hate this game has gotten. It makes me wonder if this is the where the new fight will be fought on. The new Chinese\Korean made games. Especially since we collectively have already accepted Japanese games, those are fine.

There are no coincidences. We seen similar shit talking towards Wukong and Stellar Blade, especially the latter.

This game is larger in scope than the other two and now threatens the Rockstar-styled systems along with western RPGs.

A single-player game that is giving you the depth of an MMO in regards to gear, customizations and systems that rival Rockstar with ZERO MTX... all while they're adding free content to the game with patches coming out at an unprecedented rate making western devs look like slackers with gamers waiting months to even get a small patch?

That is a major threat to the gaming gatekeepers.

People aren't reacting the way they are just because there are negative reviews, it's the inconsistent, at times completely hypocritical nature of most of the negative reviews, where things they take issue with are either wrong, "There's nothing to do in this game", or they conveniently have no issue with in other similar games. Nevermind the fact that they have given games that are generally considered worse games even when judged objectively a better score than Crimson Desert.

I didn't recognize you with that cute avatar.

As I said, most of the reviews have been positive. Some extremely so. Yes, some reviewers don't like the game, but the general review score is not that far off from player sentiment.

Metacritic is the problem, lumping all reviews into a single score that is supposed to objectively be a score about how good a game is. Even a game with an score on Metacritic can have people thinking it's a 9/10 game and a 5/10 game. Not to mention Metacritic gives some reviewers more weight than others.

I am more and more like the idea of "reviewing the reviews". ;)

Didn't Pearl Abyss CEO admit that the story is bad?

I don't care though as long as it is serviceable and not overly long cutscenes.

He was being humble and said there were things they could've done better. Refreshing from the passive aggressive industry we are used to.

But like I said, nobody goes after even more vague games. Not like the manufactured narratives here.

Remember the GRR Martin hype for Elden Ring? Only to have less dialogue and story bits than here (and most other games). Love Souls games with how they approach their mysterious and vague storytelling, always will.

I will die on the hill that these same harpies can't even explain what ER is about in any comprehensible detail, not even in one or two sentences.

Story is bog standard, by-the-numbers game fare. It's not a strength of the game, but I wouldn't say it's especially or unusually 'bad'.

Hmmm......I hate the fact that you might be right about this. Especially when you consider how much the average person is getting paid in China\Korea, versus America. I wonder what the pay is for devs in East Asia vs. Eastern Europe....

Not bad, but probably not enough to justify an immediate sequel. They might need to build the fanbase more before doubling down.

Want to point out again outlets like IGN believe Duskborn, Concord, and Dragon Age: Veilguard are better games than this one.

Let that sink in how out of touch and fucking useless professional reviewers are.

Aren't they different reviewers though? 6/10 is still inexcusable, seems that reviewer may be up for a re-review of the game after a month or two.

Let's wait and see.

I think 4 million sales is just consumers giving the middle finger to all those companies chasing gaas-lightning in a bottle, serving mindless regurgitated slob like highguard and concord/marathon and such. People are done with those.

And then here is this game giving you hunderds of hours gameplay with no dlc/mtx promises, and fixing problems in the game within days. Days. Not months or years to fix a bug. Even turns bugs into gameplay features because they are fun.

And this company/game not giving a damn about politics and agendas but fully focussing on gameplay is getting blasted with strange reviews and comments by the western media, just like wukong or stellar blade did. hmmm Western gaming is so F'ed.

What political message?
I don't even know what kind of insanity is being spewed in this thread. A hate campaign? Fucking when lol? The game was one of the most hyped releases of the years and reviewers didn't like it, citing convoluted/unintuititve controls and half-assed systems. People who stuck with it for dozens of hours said it starts slow and gets much better. Game turns out to be a rousing success commercially.

Now we have people pretending it's some kind of conflict between the western and Asian studios and that it was hated on because there is no diversity, or LGBTQ nonsense.

This game had fuck-all to do with culture wars, but some people just cannot live without that angle. I didn't play Ghost of Yotei either because I think Tsushima was mediocre, but by all accounts, the only "woke" thing about this game is the female protagonist.

I like the game but holy mackerel the controls are confusing.

I also wish I didn't constantly shoulder check people when trying to talk to them.

I bought it knowing there would be a learning curve though, and I'll learn to be gentle with the NPCs as time goes on.

The level of jank in this game is apparently tolerated or overlooked for some reason, I don't get why it's getting pass here?

95% of the industry are janky games...There are few and far between which focus presentation, but they lack so much on gameplay.
Why is jank a problem now? Check the OT...everyone agrees the game is not polished to the extreme...
