I am perfectly content with never buying another AAA game. I have such a large backlog on Steam and PS. I'll manage.
That's really where I'm at. The price of the consoles isn't really the catch for me (I've already got a 5090 and a Pro), it's the value for the price. This PlayStation generation has been the most underwhelming one I've ever experienced. If they hadn't gotten me at launch with Demon's Souls, I could've easily made it several more years before upgrading. Shit, cross-gen games only really stopped about a year or so ago.

Misread title. I meant to say I'm buying a PS6 at launch most likely.

100% getting at launch. 1 year after launch, the price would have probably increased. In Canada, i got the ps4 at launch. Paid $400 at the time, less than 6 months later it was $450. Got the PS5 and pro at launch, the prices only went up. If anything, it seems like launch will be the cheapest time to get it.

100 percent.

This ram situation will pass but not until at least 2028. Then you need the market to re adjust again. I don't need more than a ps5 pro that feels like I picked up for a bargain.

I'm set for years.

I'll be sitting out the launch, certainly. But that's pretty standard for me. I usually buy in after a year or two.

I've got a PS5 Pro, so I doubt I'll feel any urgency to upgrade to a PS6 right at launch. I can wait.

I'm already on Switch 2 so I technically am next gen :messenger_sunglasses: But I skipped several generations (GBA, N64, GC, WiiU, 3DS in terms of Nintendo) so I wouldn't care if I have to skip another eventually.

There's no sign the next gen will be any improvement. I suspect it'll be down to 'I must play this game' as a reason. That reason never came up for me with PS5.

Simply having prettier pixels means absolutely nothing to me, not when the games are still largely the same design-wise as from PS3/360 or PS4/XB1 generation. And in many ways much staler than those games ever were due to homogenization of design style and rampant adoption of "best practices" and market trends.

At least to me, in the AAA space, the spirit that drew me to the hobby is mostly dead. And none of the current players have the capability to revitalize it, because they have no reason to. They benefit way too much from things as they exist today, they're too comfortable with each other's company, to bother seriously shaking up the dynamic. That's just the truth and I was trying to tell myself a few years ago that maybe, it wouldn't go that way.

But I was simply lying to myself. I'm gonna eventually upgrade to a new PC, install Steam OS and Bazzite on it, use my Steam & GOG accounts for any new games that catch my interest, and just be more than happy with that. Especially when there are still hundreds of retro classics I've yet to experience and would love to play (time permitting), offering a lot more fun and creativity than the vast majority of newer releases. Even their flaws are charming in a way; at least it gives me something that'll feel new and unorthodox to learn & play.

If I'm forced to, I'll try getting a Switch 2 on the cheap when more big Nintendo games release. Sony has such a long road to repair before I would seriously consider a PS6 that it's not even funny, and Xbox? Welp if I can dump Windows off the thing and slap in Steam OS or Bazzite, then it's a soft maybe. Otherwise that's dead in my eyes, too.

Grew up a Nintendo kid and enjoyed my jump to Sonys first 2 systems. But I loved the PS3 and PS4 eras because of the content that they had exclusively on their platform. So I was 100% in jumping to PS5 at launch expecting a generational leap with something prior generations could not offer.

It's back in Sonys court to convince me I need to move to PS6. Otherwise I'll just stay on PS5.

Given what is happening now, I'll sit one out for PS6 especially with its $1000 price tag. I'm good with what I currently have for many years to come.

I own a great gaming PC. Sony couldn't entice me the way Nintendo has during the last five years. I mean I like open world slop (i.e. expensive-feeling exploration games) it's just that with so few releases it's way less likely that they'll make one with a setting/premise I like. And they haven't. I skipped PS5 and will likely skip the next one as well. I'm at least considering getting a Switch 2.

With that said, have you seen the economy? People might struggle to find anything other than a PS6 if they'll want to play the latest and greatest right? It's not great. Then again, we might see another generation with cross platform releases several years into the cycle.

I still plan on upgrading my PC every generation ($1200-$1600 every 2-3 years), but I am bowing out of PlayStation after supporting all of their systems since PS3.

Currently have PS5 Pro but barely use it, haven't even turned it on in months, and 90% of time when I do its to play digital PS4 games since. Only disc game I have is Demon Souls since it didn't come to PC. I will play through that and then sell it, and will eventually buy a used PS4 Pro so that I can access all my digital games.

Makes zero sense to spend another $800 or whatever in 2027+ to only use it a few times per year like I did with PS5 Pro.

As I sit here today and try to process a lot of this week's news, my knee jerk reaction is to somehow just double down on Nintendo again. If I am going to pay $400 or $500 dollars for subpar hardware in today's console world, I may as well stick with whimsy and overall simplicity (relatively speaking).

Sony is turning me away with their strategies and pricing. I am usually financially capable to keep up with the hobby; right now, I am in a financial tough spot so upgrading to a Pro isn't feasible unless without unreasonable and irresponsible discomfort. And even when I am back on track, I have reservations about $650 for a regular PS5, let alone $900 FUCKING DOLLARS FOR A CONSOLE???

No. I'm not a broke boy. I make good money teaching piano, I've got rental income and dividends from bank shares.
I'm not trying to be crass in saying this, but the way I see it is that if you have to worry about $1k breaking the bank for a game console that will last 2-3 years then you've got a LOT BIGGER problems in life to worry about.

100%. After this shit ass generation where single player studios have been forced to make live service slop, games now require 6 years and hundreds of millions of dollars to develop, hardware has gotten repeatedly more expensive, and game devs are constantly bitching and moaning at gamers for not buying games that no gamers ever asked for, I'm almost certainly out.

Looking at the newest price hikes, we could be looking at a $1000 PS6. Legitimately. And to do what exactly? Play more live service slop? Sony needs their teeth kicked down their throat like they did at the beginning of the PS3 generation. Xbox needs to be put to pasture after self inflicting the slowest form of suicide on itself, also known as Game Pass. And Nintendo? Well, they just doesn't make games for me anymore and they haven't for years.

My PS4 and Wii are fully jailbroken. I've got an optical drive emulator that I need to install for my Dreamcast to replace my disc drive which is getting finicky. I recently bought the Analogue 3D to replace my dying N64. And I've stopped updating my PS5's firmware to eventually jailbreak it. I have all the hardware I need to play all the games I want. Plus, with ROM hacks and homebrew, there's even more games out there that I could enjoy.

Depending on the launch price I could see myself getting a PS6 later instead of launch day. Another deciding factor would be the launch window lineup and whether it's cross gen or PS6 only.
On the other hand; if the trend of price increases continues with no sign of slowing down one might as well bite the bullet as early as possible.

Depends on how tired I am when it starts. I end up buying every PlayStation generation but $900 for one is probably going to make me hesitate for at least a minute or two.

Had no intention of getting a next gen console regardless of the price.

PC all the way for me. Nothing wrong with consoles of course, just where I'm at in my life. I just want one gaming platform.. and I can have a Desktop, Laptop, Set-top, and handheld PC all running Steam.

I can wait. Not a lot of console that I got at launch (maybe the dreamcast). Probably would have got a ps5 somewhat near launch of availability wasn't shit. Definitely waiting on the PS6, see how the pricing pans out and potential hardware issues.

Gaming is a luxury item, and most of us have enough disposable income (or we're stupid) to spend money on it. Given that is the case, why would you sit it out or "need" to justify your purchase? I mean, you do enjoy gaming as a hobby, right? And, I assume, would like to see it continue. The launch period is exactly the time where that matters lol... and given cloud is something these companies really want to push, sitting out next gen is probably not going to be our best move; if these companies even release a traditional console, so, please don't sit the next gen out, especially if we are actually going to get hardware that can play games natively.

In other words, don't be foolish.

Day 1 if I can get a hold of one cuz life's too short and I'm getting too old to deny myself something I enjoy if I can afford it.

Still cheaper than a lot of other hobbies men do such as gambling on sports.

I was day 1 for the 360. Felt like it was worth it, not sure what those launches are like now. Back then it was a party atmosphere and people just chilling until a couple hours before Best Buy opened. We all knew what number the other guy was in line it was a really great time. A couple guys brought Tahoes with Xboxs in the back and we had a lan party.

I have really no idea... I have a PS5 Pro, so it should be OK even when a PS6 gets released...
But then it is a question of the price (the new price increases for the PS5 are crazy) and if I get into the hype of the new devices like at the PS5 launch...
I am very happy with the PS5 Pro hardware and I do not really see what they can really improve on it beside making it a bit faster. The PS5 is silent, the controller is great, the patched PSSR2 looks great, most games look more then "good enough" with 60fps...
Not sure what really will be the "buy me" factor of the PS6 beside the games looking slightly better or frame generation boosts 60fps games higher...

I feel like Pro is a solution for me too, if I can get one (money). The crazy price increases make me further worry about PS6 pricing, which I was already fairly worried about because of the Pro lol.

I like to buy on launch day, but gaming has gone down a different road than I am on, and with these prices it would take one or two dream games to compel me to buy in at launch, the way I am feeling today.

I use my Switch as a second screen for watching YouTube at my desk and my PS5 has been unplugged for months. I already have a PC and unless Final Fantasy doesn't get PC ports anymore, I'm not getting another PlayStation.

There are so many games for me to play, I'll just play something else if I can't get it because it's a console exclusive.

I think Sony knows to have an exclusive or two available at launch. Probably won't be huge big budget games since those would need a large install base or cross gen.
But I expect a smaller budget banger or two exclusive to PS6.
